This Experiment is a way of successfully viewing the emission spectra for metal carbonates. By heating the carbonates electrons go from there normal state called ground state to a higher energy state called excited state and the difference in electron energy gap of each metal carbonate makes up the difference of colours. This excited state is not a stable state but while in this state the atom gains additional energy but the variation of energy emitted is a characteristic of that in particular element. In this state the electrons emit photons which is the energy that corresponds to light wavelengths and therefore produces the different light emissions.

experiment A random error that occurred was the influence of background light. Due to safety reasons the lights in the lab weren’t turned off so as a repercussion it may have affected the colours that people perceived through the spectroscope. It affects the purity of the colours detected in the emission spectra and in bad cases alter the colour so much it could be perceived as a different element. Due to these reasons stray light from fluorescent sources is a significant error. The interpretation of colour seems basic as red should be red but it is well known that colour vision declines with age. Age is one factor that can affect colour perception but general eye vision if a person wears glasses they have some sort of seeing difficulty that can extend to colour vision that can’t be treated with glasses. This can have an effect on the experiment but is only a minor error that can occur. During the experiment many different substances were used but we used the same equipment to observe the colours they produced. This contamination would have been especially prevalent in the evaporating dish as every substance was placed in it and in some groups it wasn’t properly washed with distilled water. Another area of possible contaminations was the paddle pops that were used as spatulas to place the substance in the evaporating dish. If a new paddle pop stick wasn’t used each time contamination could occur frequently. Due to this contamination was a significant error associated with this experiment. One of the most prominent equipment used was the bunsen burner. The bunsen burners used were extremely worn and had been well used which affected the integrity of the flame. It affected it as the blue flame couldn’t produce a complete combustion which wouldn’t have allowed a perfect blue flame to be produced. If the flame produced didn’t effect the solution in the intended way due to the flame not having a full combustion it would have been a significant error. Another possible defective equipment that was used is the spectroscope. The spectroscopes could have had been out of calibration making then ineffective and can produce the wrong results. The spectroscopes were on the lower scale of quality and had a smaller colour spectra compared to the more expensive versions. As it was consistent with all the groups that conducted this extremement so is considered a systematic error. State At Least Two improvements that could be made to minimise the impacts of errors in this practical The background light in this experiment posed a significant problem. It fortunately can be easily fixed by turning the lights to the lab off and covering the windows but to safely conduct this experiment in the dark with the amount of people doing it at at the same time isn’t practical. A better options would be to conduct the experiment at separate times fewer people would be in the lab. That way it would be dark but pose less of a safety risk. As many substances were used contamination throughout would have been rife. The most practical way to reduce contamination is to use distilled water to rinse the exposed composed components and to use a new paddle pop for every new substance. This would reduce contamination as no surface would be used for more than one substance without being cleaned or replaced. The spectroscope used were basic and didn’t show the full spectra of light. An alternative could be the use of a photometer which is an instrument used to measure light. This would eliminate human error with our perception of colour and allow mathematical based results to be shown. This scene is shown from an over the shoulder shot but on a downwards angle. Darabont made Andy, a tall man, seem small compared to Hadley as Hadley has all the power and at any moment can kill Andy with minimal repercussions. The lighting is bright almost patronising with the fear Andy is going through. Darabont once again the costumes are complete opposite Andy is wearing loose clothing that is basic, clothes that on the outside he wouldn’t have worn while Hadley is dressed in a militant sense. The background is full of greenery trees symbolising freedom. This especially links into the next scene with the beers showing how they would want nothing more than to feel normal again. Andy was willing to risk his life in this scene for that ideal. Tommy/Minor Character In the film Shawshank Redemption directed by Frank Darabont several minor characters were used but Tommy imparticularly makes a difference. Tommy as a minor character does not develop in the same way as the protagonists Red and Andy but Darabont uses him to reflect the good that still exists. He is witty, fun and is a reflection of what life should be like he is shown like this through his dialogue, but also through the lighting as he is never shown in darkness. An example of his dialogue is when he first introduced and is telling a story “"Yes sir, I sure did, but if I drop this fucking thing you got me on destruction of property too." Darabont shows this primarily in the scene that Tommy dies where he meets the Warden who walks from the darkness into the light, it is a symbolic gesture that he is deceiving Tommy into believing he can trust him. When Tommy opens up, the Warden returns back into the darkness and the head guard Headley shoots him unseen in the dark shows the contrast between light and dark, good and bad. When he gets shot it is from a high angle showing Darabont uses Tommy to represent the best that Andy had done by helping him get his high school diploma and how much the warden controls him. It was Tommy’s death that finally drove Andy to escape so even in death Tommy was Andy’s light. Tommy’s death illustrates the deadly level of corruption and abuse of power the Warden dictates. It also emphasises a deep sense of hopelessness as they can’t do anything to escape his wrath. 2 Scenes Andy’s Arrival To Shawshank The scene of Andy’s arrival introduces us briefly to several important characters and Darabont uses with the aid of reds dialogue to give the audience insight of what their opinions of Andy was on first arrival.
“he was just a little turd in prison grays. Looked like a stiff breeze could blow him over. That was my first impression of the man.” The arrival of Andy in Shawshank Prison was the point of no return for him. Darabont uses this scene as a reality check for Andy which makes him feel extremely small quickly. Darabont does this by using high angle shots of the guards high up with guns showing how insignificant Any is now compared to them. This is also shown in the close up shots of Andy showing his concern and his darting eyes trying to take in all the information. The background music plays throughout this scene isn’t cheerful, but paints a picture of uncertainty and inhibition for times to come. It is also instrumental and is completely different to the opening scene “If I didn’t care”. When approaching the prison building Darabont uses Andy’s point of view shot/ low angle shot looking up to show how intimidating the prison is. When they are outside it is light, especially Andy’s last glimpse before he goes inside into the darkness is symbolic. When inside Darabont uses the delousing powder to follow the theme of controlling and almost ownership over him from there onwards they can do anything to him and get away with
it. Warden In Andy’s Cell The tossing of the cell scene is an important scene which Darabont uses to show the development of Andy’s relationship with the Warden. The Warden seems to “size up” Andy through many means. The first is intimidation, he gets his guard Hadley to trash his cell through an inspection, which has loud breaking noises of objects smashing. The tossing of his cell is also a foreshadowing technique for what will happen in the future as the same action is taken place in Andy’s cell when he escapes and the Warden and guards are searching for him. The tossing of the cell also makes the small stature Warden powerful in a threatening way towards Andy. Through the conversations Darabont uses over the shoulder shots accompanied by dialogue. This dialogue has many symbolic moments such as when handing back his bible “ salvation lies within”. This was a play on words and irony as his way to freedom the rock hammer lied within. This scene follows the theme of abuse of power which is shown with the irony and play on words that his only salvation in life literally lies within the book.
Writing 2 Aidyn Ogilvy: Writing Portfolio I am going to write about a scene from the movie The Shawshank Redemption. I will be using figurative language to put the audience in the shoes of the main lead character Andy Dufrense. My audience will be people who like Stephen King. The scene will be when he escapes the prison. The lights have been turned out.
War was one of the most difficult and brutal things a society could ever go through. World War II was especially terrible because it affected so many people.World War II was centered in Europe and the people of the European countries felt the effects much more than many of the other countries that were also participating in the world war. In the book All the Light We Cannot See written by Anthony Doerr, the story took place during World War II in Europe, the center stage for the war. This war was one of the most difficult wars because it destroyed homes, displaced thousands, tore families apart, killed off loved ones, and forced people to make tough decisions they had to live with for the rest of their lives. In All The Light We Cannot See,
The creators of this movie used several effective, and often subtle, methods to illustrate the hope found in Andy and his surroundings. Andy was always portrayed as a clean-cut and well-groomed prisoner with his shirt always buttoned and his hair always combed. This self-respect was in great contrast to the other prisoners who were portrayed as dirty, stereotypical prisoners. The common prisoners also had vocabularies and grammar that were far inferior to Andy’s. The distinctions between Andy and the common prisoners showed that Andy was different, those differences were that he had hope.
Andy didn’t know from the get go that he was going to escape from a hole he dug in the wall. In fact he didn’t know he was going to escape at all. But he always had hope that he would leave the Shank. This is evident in how he had taken his money and saved it from getting washed away by the on coming hurricane. Also, he had his good friend set up a bank account for his new identity. He kept this hope of getting out although it changed a few times. At first it was just hope of getting out somehow, then it was escaping, for a brief time it came back to getting out legitimately when he met Tommy Williams. It got to Andy when the warden crushed that hope by transferring Tommy, but he didn’t give up. His hope went right back to escaping through that little hole he dug.
The movie Shawshank Redemption depicts the story of Andy Dufresne, who is an innocent man that is sentenced to life in prison. At Shawshank, both Andy and the viewers, witness typical prison subculture.
The film stars Tim Robbins as Andrew 'Andy' Dufresne and Morgan Freeman as Ellis Boyd 'Red' Redding. The film portrays Andy spending nearly two decades in Shawshank State Prison, a surreal house of correction in Maine and his friendship with Red, a fellow inmate, which gradually develops over the years. Consequently the three reasons that the director wanted to produce this movie are to reveal hope, despair and integrity. Red describes the reasons eloquently: “All I know for sure is that Andy Dufresne wasn’t much like me or anyone else I ever knew. . . . It was a kind of inner light he carried around with him.”
The presence of Andy Dufresne made Red’s time in Shawshank more bearable. He was interesting, different. Andy gave a change from the regular routine of prison life since the day he arrived. Red describes Andy, “His fingernails were always clipped, and they were always clean...it seems to sum Andy up for me” (17). Even after losing everything, Andy always tried to keep himself neat and clean. He was different than the other prisoners. Red states, “In all
...a journey to find Andy. This is the hope that triumphs the discouragement, which was previously set in place by Brooks’ suicide. Andy also was a driving force when Red was released. After his unrivaled escape from Shawshank, Andy restored Red’s, and all the inmates’ hope for a better life. But also it is Red that is affected by Andy’s light and enthusiasm for hope, which is the instrumental shift in the story‘s development. Although, a good portion of the movie occurs in the dark like lights out at the prison, which is a profoundly tenebrous time when the characters are left with only their own noetic conceptions. An example is that nighttime death of Tommy Williams, which alludes to the desire to stay away from the truth or the “light”. Hadley walks into the light after he commits the murder to show that he partially realizes the malfeasance he has just committed.
To get an insight into why Andy stole all of the Warden’s money and sent his account books to the newspaper, reinforcement theory is used. Andy has worked hard for Shawshank prison and basically everyone inside of it, so when he escaped prison he felt he was owed some sort of reward for his behaviour. The reward in this situation is monetary, as well as personal; Andy received $370,000 and he also got revenge on Hadley and the Warden for the negative behaviours they had bestowed toward him. In this case the roles were reversed and both the boss and the manager were punished for their undesired behaviours. The Warden could not accept his punishment and decided to quit life all together.
This film is al about when Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), an innocent banker, is sent to prison for a double life sentence. He makes friends while inside, his closest friend becoming Ellis Boyd Redding (Morgan Freeman) or ‘Red’ as his friends call him. Andy suffers with quiet dignity. To keep this under control, he continues with his favourite hobby, which just so happens to be geology. After 20 years of his sentence, he becomes the first prisoner to ever escape from Shawshank. Also he manages to have the Warden (Bob Gunton) found out for all of his crimes.
“Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption”, taken from the collection Different Seasons published in 1982, is one of Stephen King’s most acknowledged works. The novella is written from the perspective of Red, an inmate of Shawshank State Penitentiary, who recalls the story of Andy Dufresne, his friend and fellow inmate. Dufresne, a banker from Maine, is sent to Shawshank State Penitentiary to serve a double life sentence after being falsely accused of murdering his wife and her lover. In his narrative, Red recounts every aspect of prison life, from extreme loneliness and boredom to brutal beatings and corruption. However, his main focus is Andy Dufresne and his impact on Shawshank State Penitentiary over the course of twenty-eight years.
During the course of Shawshank Redemption, the film evolves and builds upon itself. The plot twists in just the right way for the viewer to still be engaged. An example of this is when you think Andy (Tim Robbins) is about to be thrown off a roof for taking stab at the prison guards wife, only to have a request granted (a
Spanning from 1947 through 1966, The Shawshank Redemption takes the "innocent man" in a prison theme and veers in a distinctive way. Rather than venturing down the typical crusade of freedom route Darabont went with a different approach. Focusing more on the personal expense of acclimating to prison life and how a number of prisoners console to normal prison life and lose the ability to withstand life on the other side of the walls.
Atomic Emission spectroscopy is a technique used in the determination and quantification of elements present with a chosen sample. The basic idea of this process it that first an atom is formed, and then it is excited then emitted. After the photon is emitted and energy is released knowing the energy released one can quantitatively and qualitatively determine the wavelength present and hence the concentration of the element. Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry is one of the most powerful and popular techniques. It is also based on the spontaneous emission of photons after elements form atoms are further excited due to expose to high temperatures. it is ideal for liquid and gas samples which can be injected directly into the injection port of the machine but for solid, extractions or acid digestion is a definite requirement so as to ensure that the analyte is freely available within the prepared solutions. In the process the samples are converted to aerosol and directly travels through the line of the plasma, at the core the inductively coupled plasma is maintained at a temperature of about 10000K, which causes immediate vaporization of the aerosol. After atom formation, excitation and photon emission, the energy of the element can be deduced, as each element have a characterized wavelength and hence each photon has a specific energy level. The total number of photo detected is directly proportional to the concentration of the analysed element in the sample. [1]
Losing something that you have had for a long time can affect the way you act and feel. In the movie The Shawshank Redemption, Andy, experiences the death of his wife. The movie follows Andy Dufresne who is sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison for the murders of his wife and her lover and is sentenced to a tough prison. However, only Andy knows he didn’t commit the crimes. Andy deals with the death of freedom by helping the prison employees with their financial problems, expanding the library and planning an escape in prison.
