The Australian Lifeguard Service (ALS) is a fully integrated lifeguard service that provides its services to local government councils and land managers across Australia.
As a leader in aquatic safety and lifeguard services industry, they set international standards through quality accredited national training programmes producing highly skilled staff and stringent standard operating procedures. They ensure that they remain the industry benchmark for lifeguarding services.
Australian Lifeguard Service provides lifeguards to over 250 beaches in Australia. Approximately 700 lifeguards guard these beaches.
The ALS is heavily supported by government and national infrastructure that includes provision of;
• Nationally accredited training programmes
• Specialist rescue services
• Communication networks
• International expertise in rescue, medical research, coastal management and equipment development
• Recognised standards and compliance systems
The ALS has more than 30 years of professional experience. They are also backed up by Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA). Australian lifeguarding has always been at the cutting edge of lifesaving technology. They lead in the development of the latest rescue tools and techniques, both in Australia and internationally.
Through SLSA, the ALS regularly liaises with organisations at state and federal levels. This allows them to develop public policy and assist with its implementation. The ALS is also linked to the International Life Saving Federation (ILS) providing the opportunity to exchange information among other lifeguarding organisations worldwide.
ALS Vision

Lifeguard training and structure:
The Australian Lifesaving Academy (ALA) works with the ALS and is able to provide an ongoing staff development program to build lifeguards skills and knowledge. This also allows the linking of programs to the national industry standards as set out in training packages.
Lifeguards have to undertake regular assessments in lifesaving skills and fitness. Simulations are run and used to test skills and knowledge to ensure that staffs are job ready to deal with the public and prepared to deal with emergencies when they arise.
The ALA employs the latest training and its accredited programs are constantly being reviewed to ensure that all role requirements are up to date. The ALS remains at the leading edge for its service provision and skills maintenance for its employees.
This was established as part of a range of measures taken following the death of an 8 year old girl, whose death at the hands of her carers was seen as preventable. These areas are:
The First five weeks the student’s learn life saving, knot tying, underwater knot tying, basic first aid, and surf passages in small inflatable boats. Along with this is a 50-yard underwater swim, which must be completed and the students are often revived when they pass out. Also throughout out the whole six months of BUD/S (Basic Underwater Demolition School), the Seal Teams go through many torturous events and lessons. One of these being surf torture. This is where the entire class must wade into the surf zone to their waistline, then sit down with arms linked. Just to let you know the water in Coronado, California never gets above sixty-eight degrees during the summer and fifty-eight degrees during the winter. There the men with linked arms will sit there for hours at a time, soon the cold sucks out all of their body warmth and the whole class is shivering in unison as the waves crash over there heads.
Working with children from Year 5 to Year 12 in an aquatic setting. I am responsible for supervising and educating these children, whilst being actively engaged in the planning process. The service we provide caters for a number of diverse children as we regularly engage with students with physical and intellectual disabilities. Subsequently, our service incorporates inclusive planning in order to accommodate the needs of all students. As an extension of the planning process we also regularly engage in risk management
...ing the high amounts of glutamate in the spinal fluid. There is now a drug out to defend against that problem. Rilutek is the first effective treatment for people with ALS. Laboratory studies suggest that Rilutek is “neuroprotective” which means it protects nerve cells from damage. So in simpler terms, this drug fights off the high amounts of glutamate in hopes of slowing down ALS. This drug is not a surefire cure for ALS though, and also any abilities lost before taking the drug will not be restored. So far it is just a hope for the future; maybe someday studies and advancements such as this will lead to a cure for ALS.
... Alcoholic Anonymous Lifesavers group helped members work through their problems by providing a supportive and caring environment where everyone can feel free to share their issues. The group also provides an environment that helps normalize the problems or issues that the group member is experiencing.
Internet research, a personal interview with a paramedic, and the Occupational Outlook Handbook are the sources used to gather the information in this profile.
The Health and Safety First Aid legislations is also an important legislation for my sports club because there will always be a first aid kit around and most possible a qualified first aider around the workplace. There is also a code of practice, which everyone can have a copy of the Health and Safety First Aid (1981) guide. Here is the stuff it tells you
To be a successful lifeguard, you must like to be in the sun and you need to be very patient with pool patrons. They can be very rude to you, especially the older crowd who has trouble dealing with a teenager telling them that they can not throw their child in the air.
In 2005, Congress reauthorized the legislation for the NHTSA. Under the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equality Act: A Legacy for Users or SAFETEA-LU, Congress then created the Federal Interagency Committee on Emergency Medical Services. The EMS system today is still a serious career that is competitive to get into. Medical Assistance is integrated into Law Enforcement, Fire Fighters, and anyone in public safety because it’s an honorable career and works to improve the safety of the community in which we live in.
One major reason ALS is such a frightening disease is because no cure has been established. Although no effective treatment has been developed, a number of drug trials have been conducted, and there are some devices designed to help ALS patients maintain independence as well as safety as the disease progresses.
The American Cancer Society (ACS) is a well-managed nationwide organization that has helped many people fight
I do not feel that any improvements need to be made for this organization. They utilize all types of prevention and educational tools, including technology, media, and events. ACS can only continue their research in hopes of finding the cure to cancer. Time is the only factor that may be for, or against, the Society’s efforts. Spreading faith, knowledge, and strategies to overcome cancer is the only way to keep individuals safe from the burden of cancer.
Every year communities struggle each year around the nation with issues of life safety. In 2012, the nation’s fire departments responded to 31,854,000 responses that resulted in the deaths 0f 2,855 civilians and injuring 16,500 causing an estimated $12,427 million dollars in damage. (United States Fire Administration, 2014) These incidents put at risk 345,950 career and 783,300 volunteer firefighters that resulted in the deaths of 81 individuals (U.S. Department of Homeland Security, 2013) and nearly 70,000 reported injuries. ( Karter & Molis, 2013) These numbers represent incidents that are determined to be in the line of duty but do not take into consideration the long-term health risk issues that may develop. Evidence shows that he hazards associated with Fire and Emergency Services are consistent across the board whether paid or volunteer and jeopardize the lives and health of each individual, placing administrative and physical control measures reduces this risk to firefighter within an organization. While it is impossible to eliminate the hazards firefighters face, it is important to identify these hazards as the first step in reducing the potential for loss of life and wellbeing both physically and mentally.
Public safety covers a wide variety of people and organizations, but carries one common theme and that is, the public’s safety. This course has broadened my knowledge on the many roles that make the public safety sector go around and the role the public plays in it as well. My thoughts before the course were close minded and to the point. I quickly realized that policing is not as cut and dry as I once portrayed it to be. Society is always changing and adapting, and it is the job of the those in public safety to adapt and change with it. The mindset that I grew up with, in rural Saskatchewan, was the police are good people and you will only need to deal with them if you break the law or see someone break the law. My answers in the module 1 survey reflected my upbringing. My first thought for
A security guard works in any building or area that needs protection from theft, fire, vandalism, and illegal entry. For every security guards job it depends on where they live and work. Every security guard has a different task. Some work in airports. If you work in an airport you might have to search travelers for weapons, explosives, or drugs. They may have also check cargo for illegal items. There are security guards that work museums and art galleries. These security guards have to make sure no one steals, damages, or touches artwork or historical artifacts. They also help people if they have questions and bring people to safety in case if there is a fire or an earthquake. In office buildings and factories, security guards have to make
