Life as a Prostitute in The Painted Cohorts It was a dark, menacing night as she stood there in the shadows. Waiting for the finale of the show that was playing, she glanced toward the exit through which people would soon be leaving. The rich, as patrons of the theatre house, promised her a salary at least for today. Her tattered clothes revealed the effects of personal destitution; the emaciated frame, that presently existed, harked back upon a body she must have once possessed. Driven by poverty to the realms of "painted cohorts," she makes up her face daily, distinguishing her life from the respected (264). She is an outcast, a leper, a member of the marginalized in society; she envelops the most degraded of positions and sins against her body in order to survive. As she looks up, her eyes reflect a different kind of light, a glimmer of beauty that has not yet faded despite her present conditions. She was, at one time, a "virtuous" woman, most likely scorned by a dishonest love. Finding no comfort or pity for her prior mistakes, she must turn to the streets and embrace the inevitable - the dishonor and shame from her previous engagement will follow her unto death. Shunned from society she becomes the woman who sells herself for money and sadly finds no love. She is the abandoned, the betrayed, and the lost, embarrassed girl; she is "of the painted cohorts," the female prostitute of the streets (264). Prostitution in the nineteenth century was perhaps one of the most degrading positions for a woman during the era. Identified by dress, makeup, and forward mannerisms, a woman employed within the business was avoided by all respectable persons. She is a sexual being, independent and unique, and she hints at the hope of society respecting her as such. She stands beneath the streetlight and waits for the theatre to open its doors. She looks toward the ground, knowing her unworthy position in her culture, and waits for a person to understand her circumstances, to see her not as the prostitute but as the woman who needs money, love, passion, or excitement to replace the emptiness that led her to first begin her walk on these streets. Colin G. Calloway’s The Scratch of a Pen 1763 and the Transformation of North America is a well researched, effective, and a creative story of North America during the year 1763. Calloway narrates his way through the year 1763 and talks about the effects on American History as a result of the Treaty of Paris 1763. The story illuminates the themes of racism, gender, and republicanism. Calloway has interesting techniques to approach important topics to show the topics significance. His book is very well researched and he cites a lot of different reliable sources to help make understanding the time period easier.
During this time in society the industry of prostitution was an economic gold mine. The women operate the brothel while very distinguished men in the community own and take care of the up keep. The brothel keepers are seen as nothing more than common home wrecking whores. However, the owners of the brothels are viewed as successful business men.

Shelley Reid’s concept that a writer should be passionate and have a connection to their writing. Throughout the duration of the film, the students were asked to write in their journals about anything they want. The majority, if not all, of the students write about the struggles they have faced in their life and how it has impacted them. For example, the one girl begins the film by talking about how gangs have been a part of her life since she was a child. At first many of the students do not want to do the assignment, but eventually they all start to writing in their journals daily. In addition, the students later write letters to Meip Geis, who helped hind Anne Frank and her family, about how they felt about the book or any topic the wanted. Whenever the students in the film had to write, they were always interested in the topic, or they had a personal connection to what they wrote

"Virtue is something lofty, elevated and regal, invincible and indefatigable; Pleasure is something lowly and servile, feeble and perishable, which has its base and residence in the brothels and drinking houses" (Cornell & Lomas,39). Prostitution, though, not only took place in brothels and taverns. Women worked as prostitutes in brothels, inns, or baths open to the public (Pomeroy,192). They either walked the streets or stopped and stood outside the brothels, which were not allowed to open until 3 pm (Balsdon, 224). Sometimes prostitutes were used as after dinner entertainment (Edwards, 188), and many hotel owners provided their guests with prostitutes (Shelton, 327).

In New Orleans, Rutherford becomes a petty thief. He says that he “looked for honest work” but “found nothing” so he stole (3). Rutherford also says that stealing was “a way to shake off stress and occupy his hands” (103). As scholar Ashraf H.A. Rushdy notes, “stealing, for Rutherford, is more than an occupation: it is a philosophy”(376). As a child, Reverend Peleg Chandler “[noticed] the stickiness of his fingers”(3). In order to gain access aboard the Republic, Rutherford steals Josiah Squibb’s paper and continues his habit of stealing throughout the voyage.
Q1: Butler’s theory of desire separates all desires into two groups, the desire for “self-love” and the desire for “particular affection”, which are all other desires like hunger, sleep, or sex. “Self-love” is a person general desire for happiness, this, as Butler states is an internal desire, a desire for our own enjoyment and satisfaction. Butler separates this desire from the desire for “particular affections” because these are all external desires, the desire for objects around us that fulfill those desires. He says that these desires are not based on reason, but may follow from it. For example a person instinctively wants to eat or drink but may not know why he needs to eat or drink. Therefore that desire for food is not a conscious decision, “I should eat now because I need the energy to live,” but rather it is an innate desire, “I want food because I am hungry.”
