Life Lesson Learned by the End of Life There was a time in my life when I was in Law Enforcement. I had started out in the jail, as most officers do, coming out of the police academy. While working in the jail, I was offered a position as a road deputy. I was very excited about this opportunity as this was a major goal. This is why one gets into law enforcement, to be on the front line against the criminal element. After several years on the road, I was offered a detective position. Shortly after appointment, I attended a week long Death Investigation course at a large University in St. Louis. Little did I know, what I was about to learn, taking what I already knew, and what I was going to do with it, was going to have a profound effect on me for the rest of my life. I learned how to deal with situations that were foreign to me, like death. It eased my fear of this unknown. I went from feeling overwhelmed during an investigation to being able to comprehend what needed to be done. So many times, I would try and tackle more than I could handle. I soon learned that I could apply this in my everyday life. Everything from buying a car and dealing with the salesman. I now treat salesmen as a “suspect.” I also use this when I purchase items such as health insurance. Health insurance can be a complicated issue. I found asking questions helps make my decision more clear and reveals the potential deception. So, I began asking more questions. Even better, I now know to ask the “right” questions.
Who would have thought, taking my experiences from a death investigation course where I saw the demise of people for a week straight, I would be able to apply them to my everyday life. Ironically, I did not know what a profound effect this was going to have on the rest of my
