Adapting To Any Situation
“Life Isn’t Fair” that is a quote that is going to get you nowhere you can’t expect to just get what you want when you want it. Different events helps you prepare for the future and it’s up to you to use the experience to actually control something or just give up on the situation. In this story Mr.London and Buck can adapt to any situation life hands to them. When Buck was in the snow for the first time without anywhere to sleep. He made a place to sleep he didn’t wait for anyone to do it for him he did it himself . Also Jack London was poor and decided to not just be the one person to just give up or accept handouts so he balanced multiple jobs.
Jack London wasn’t born into a rich lifestyle; he dropped out of
grammar school to help contribute to the family income. While working different jobs he was imprisoned for vagrancy. While in prison he decided to become a socialist and made the decision to go back to school. So when he found out his family was overcome by poverty again he dropped out of Berkeley and put his family needs before his own. That’s when someone offered him the chance to join the Klondike Gold Rush and he did, but they never found Gold. At that moment he didn’t say “Life isn’t fair” he sold his stories about his adventures from the Gold Rush and ever since he has been having a smooth uphill road. Buck, a half Saint Bernard and a half Scotch shephard has woken up his ferine strain. Throughout the story Buck’s instincts was advancing. If it wasn’t for the other dog Spitz being such a nightmare Buck would have never found the Dominant Primordial Beast. The death of his former friend Curly was a huge milestone of his life. That is when Buck started growing his hatred toward Spitz. Spitz has been nothing but a pain in Buck neck, literally Spitz once bit Buck on the neck. Instead of letting Spitz ruining his life Buck decided to eliminate the threat. Some people may think that they aren’t adapting to the situation because the situations they come across isn’t as difficult as the ones facing the 21st century. However their opinion is not valid every time they are in a situation they don’t think of the downsides they think of what will happen once they accomplish it. They think of possible future and outcome and try to make it happen. Even in the 21st century we still face problems that they have already experienced such as poverty and dognapping. Based on the facts Mr.London and Buck are able to adapt to any situation that gets thrown towards them. The true reason they are able to adapt is because they don’t complain saying life isn’t fair. They are more likely to say “Life Is Fair”. If you disagree i advise you reread “The Call Of The Wild” and instead of being on the disagreeing side reverse your role.
Jack Burden is known as the “student of history” ( Warren 372). The very fact that he is a historian is ironic, as he has come from an aristocratic and reputable family and grew up in Burden’s Landing. However, Jack lacks the ambition needed to excel in life and works for Willie, despite the disapproval of this family. He “not only lacks ambition, but all ‘essential confidence’ in himself” (Bloom 132). If he had ambition, he could have married Anne Stanton earlier, as Anne would always tell him to “go on back to State and finish up” and then she will marry him “even before [he] gets [his] law degree” (448). Yet, Jack forced himself to get kicked out of school. Even as a historian, Jack cannot deal with new things he learns about people he is closely associated with. After he learned that Lois was actually a person and not “merely a luscious machine” he went into one of series of the Great Sleep ( Warren 459). After he learned about Anne Stanton and Willie’s affair, Jack temporarily escaped to the West because “when [people] don’t like whey [the] are [they] always go West” (Warren 464). Jack was not able to cope with this news that he had to leave to relieve his mind. In addition, as a historian, he does not delve into his own past. Concerning his father, he only knew that the Scholarl...
In Of Mice and Men, the author attempts to portray the hardships that a man attempts to face yet fails to withstand. Set in the post-depression era, the book depicts the harsh truth of the
Jack London has written a classic short story in the 1908 version of "To Build a Fire." This is the classic story of man fighting nature. In most genres (e.g. movies, novels, short stories) the main character comes out on top, however unlikely that is. Jack London takes literary naturalism and shows the reader how unmerciful nature is. Much like Stephen Crane in "The Open Boat," in which the one of the characters dies, London doesn't buy into that "has to have a good ending" contrivance. Through analysis of two London's letters (to R.W. Gilder and Cloudesly Johns) these two versions of "To Build a Fire" come alive with new meaning. Although there are many differences on the surface, both stories use his philosophy as expressed to Johns and both teach a moral lesson, one which will not soon be forgotten: "Never travel alone."
In the short novel Of Mice and Men, the two characters Crooks, a Negro stable hand, and Curley’s wife, a lowly farm woman, have a very important purpose. The author, John Steinbeck uses them in different ways to get across a message. Although they are very different, they both struggle with loneliness and a lack of identity throughout the whole story. During the book, Steinbeck shows similarities, differences, and an overall message about the treatment of African Americans and women in this time period through the characters of Crooks and Curley’s wife.
In the short narrative, the characters in this chapter are brought together by their handicaps. For example, Crooks, the stable boy, is not wanted and is often treated poorly because of the different color of his skin. He explains to Lennie that “I ain’t wanted in the bunkhouse…because I’m black” [p. 68]. He is not liked by the other farmhands and none of them want to share a room with him. Consequently, he is forced to live on his own in the stable in a small shack, complete with many of the tools necessary to fulfill the duties of a stable boy. He continues to explain how lonely he gets sometimes, a point he ...
Life is not a bed of roses. People use this expression to stress the fact that there are and will be difficulties in life. John Steinbeck, in his novella Of Mice and Men, does not fall short of the same views. It takes place in the year 1937, a period associated with the Great Depression, and illustrates the hardships of the time, and more so those that laborers such as George and Lennie experience. Life proves to be full of disappointments for both men who are victims of harsh circumstances in more ways than one. The two have a dream to own a farm of their own but circumstance and fate robs them of their dream for a better life. This is a depiction of the lost American Dream during the Great Depression which lasts between 1929 up to the 1940s. The poem titled “This Is Not The Life” further depicts the hardships found in life. It clearly portrays the uncertainty and struggle associated with living during the Great Depression. Thus, both the novella and the poem explain that human dreams for a great future are subject to circumstance and fate, which most of the time collude against human success in life leaving only a trace of broken dreams, pain and misery.
During a time of hardship or of economic difficulties, each person draws back into their personal space and takes no notice of others. Ignorance often leads to misunderstandings. In John Steinbeck’s novella Of Mice and Men, two men went go a new farm in search of new opportunities and a chance to fulfill their dream. Of Mice and Men is also a heartbreaking story of how such misunderstandings can lead to unfortunate events. John Steinbeck uses a disapproving voice to criticize the mistreatment of social rejects and show that misunderstanding can lead to adverse outcomes.
Buck is an interesting story about a young boy from Zimbabwe, who moved to Philadelphia and gets caught up in the sex, drugs, and violence that are in the streets of Philly. Life gets pretty hard for him as his family goes through tough times and he is forced to find his way through the world on his own and of course he manages to do so. For this book report I have chosen chapters 1-3 to summarize and express how these chapters connect or influence me as a college student.
In the novel, The Call Of The Wild, by Jack London, Buck is a domesticated dog adapting and trying to survive in the wild. The topic in this novel is perseverance since the author constantly provides many hints throughout the novel that proves that the topic in this novel is perseverance. It can be seen when Buck perseveres in trying to adapt to his situation and understanding his surroundings. Also when he preservers through all the pain and suffering that is constantly leaking around him and Buck is sometimes rewarded for persevering through the hardships that follow day by day. Thus the theme in the book is in order to be rewarded, one must persevere. This message is found throughout the book since the protagonist, Buck is always facing
Throughout the novel, Charles Dickens provides various example of how characters, no matter how badly lived their lives are, have a chance to seek for a better future. He protests through the examples of Mr. Brownlow helping out a lost orphan (Oliver) who happened to stumble across criminals, Nancy helping Oliver out because she doesn’t want Oliver to live a criminal life, and Rose and the Maylies taking Oliver in even though he committed a crime against them. Eventually Oliver is able to find his family lineage when Rose and Mr. Brownlow help him. Because of his innocence, Oliver was able to break his way through the limits society placed upon him and rise out of poverty and break the bonds and rise out of the crime world.
Secondly, Buck must adapt to being a servant instead of a king, as he once referred to himself as, And lastly he must adapt to the sleeping conditions there, because he is use to the perfect climate at judge miller's place. As an example he must adapt to running in the cold so his pads won't crack. This is because his paw pads aren't as resistant as the husky because they were born for life on the ice and snow. Secondly, Buck must become use to the fact that he is no longer the king but has instead become a slave to man. An example of bucks new position is the fact that instead of being able to roam completely freely and have everything he needs he usually doesn't have much food and his feet usually hurt. Since there are not many animals in the
In Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck shows that even if one meticulously plans out the road to their American Dream, fate will inevitably intervene and lead one to desolation and loneliness.
In Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men he discusses Dreams, loneliness, and strength. Steinbeck’s main characters George, who is classified as a mister know it all so to speak and Lennie, a mentally ill man with the mind of a five year old, have a dream of owning land of their own some day. Curley’s wife, a sly indecisive she devil, had a dream of becoming a movie star and came close, but the talent scout who claimed to be her ticket to Hollywood never called her back. Crooks , the only black character in the whole book, in a sense is lonely. In this book Crooks is left out and separated from everyone. He is not allowed in the white stable-hand cabin. In the beginning of the book George describes that the life of a stable-hand is a lonely life. Then he also describes that he and Lennie is an exception because they have each other. Curley, who is the bosses son, is used as the tough guy that bosses everyone around. It is either his way or no way. He uses this power to manipulate some of the other characters in this book of irregular events.
Life isn’t perfect; not even close. Everyone knows it, yet no one can help but dream about that perfect life and tries their best to achieve it, even those of the fictional sort. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck tells of the uncertain journey two life-long friends embark on once their job in the town of Weed is compromised. These two friends, George and Lennie, go through many struggles on their new farm as well, which ultimately results in the crushing of their “dream plan” with no chance of it ever happening after years upon years of planning. Although most of the characters in Of Mice and Men dream of a better life, their journey sadly proves that the ideal of perfect freedom and contentment are not to be found in this world.
Language, Culture, and Gender have been a huge controversy that separates human kind. People grow up in different communities which reflect their behaviors and background. Some people stand out and are invisible because they do not fit in. In other cases, people are mistreated and being abused because of their social status. There needs to be changes that can bring our nation together and accept each other for who we are. Why we are still divided as a nation is because we cannot accept that we were all born and created equally. Society is cruel.
