Human and Time
Socrates, who was one of the most famous and known Greek emperor, said that “All men’s souls are immortal, but the soul of the righteous is immortal and divine” (Socrates), so in his quote, he might explained the true meaning of gaining immortality which he meant a person who is right in his or her life gains the immortality and divine. Moreover, several generations passed through the time, and every generation forgot the previous of them. Therefore, human beings tried to challenge time and looked for gaining immortality in every way that they could. Also, many people deserve to be remembered for a long time, as an example, for their actions that they did in their time. The One Hundred Years of Solitude which was written by

Since being brave needs hard work to be, it depends on the person who tries his or her best for it. There are few who made themselves immortal by their bravery in One Hundred Years of Solitude, such as Jose Arcadio Buendia, Jose Arcadio, and Colonel Aureliano Buendia. To more illustrate, Jose Arcadio Buendia killed Prudencio Aguilar when he was told that Jose was impotent. Moreover, Jose did not let any human beings try to talk about him and his family directly or indirectly because he was known as the most enterprising man in his village. Likewise, Jose Arcadio successed in his life when he rescued his brother from Colonel Gerineldo Márquez while they wanted to murder him. To demonstrate, Colonel Aureliano Buendia was the bravest person when he was partial of the rebellions. In addition, the One Hundred Years of Solitude was mentioned that “He survived fourteen attempts on his life, seventy-three ambushes, and a firing squad” (Marquez), so it meant that he was not a craven person who will try to hide from problems or any circumstances beside he will face them in his way. Also, in our modern life, there are some of those kinds of great people who are did brave actions that are still remembered. An example of a brave person of the modern life is Nelson Mandela who was the president of South Africa, and he was known of not letting his people to live …show more content…
Invention is the best way to stay in people’s mind, especially if it was a useful and essential invention for the community like creating new technologies and inventing new medicine for some diseases because many people use them in order to make their lives easier and healthier. For instance, Jose Arcadio Buendia invented several machines, such as telescope, camera, and bird cages for Macondo to make the nature’s sight more stunning, and by the beautiful view of birds, it helped the gypsies to find Macondo easily. Similarly, One Hundred Years of Solitude stated that “José Arcadio Buendía then decided to build the memory machine that he had desired once in order to remember the marvelous inventions of the gypsies.” (Marquez). Also, their new generations invented boat and train roads to transport in many regions and trade between Macondo and other cities. In addition, One Hundred Years of Solitude showed that Aureliano Triste discovered a new way of transportatiing to other places which was by train. Also, José Arcadio Segundo brought bout to Maconco which was a new technologh, so made some French people to come to Mocando and do carnivals. Additionally, the boat and train brought so many people to Macondo which made trading easier by importing resources from foreign regions. To illustrate, Macondo had been the best place for people to live in because of the social services they had. Also, many different cultural people were
In order to be a hero, one must be courageous. Some people that are heroes are Susan B. Anthony and Harriet Tubman.
Bravery is like a very trusted friend, it will never let you down. That statement holds true in the great epic of "Beowulf." "Beowulf" is the story of a great hero who comes to the aid of a troubled king. Beowulf hears that king Hrothgar is having trouble and immediately comes to help with no questions asked. he defeats the monster, Grendel, with his bare hands. Beowulf then defeats Grendel's mother along with a dragon until he is fatally injured. Bravery is a very admirable characteristic that few people possess.
Indeed, no person can live forever because our bodies are mortal. Therefore, everyone should seize the chance given in the few years on earth to accomplish his or her desires. Historically, no human has lived past 130 years, except the narrations in the Bible or other religious books. Accordingly, this demonstrates the limited life that humans have, which is prone to a premature end due to diseases, accidents, and calamities. For this reason, the uncertainty of the human life makes it necessary for the people to live each day as their last on earth so that they can strive to perfect the desires, duties, and responsibilities bestowed on them. Furthermore, the completion of the tasks should not be a routine but rather a passion for creating a better environment for the success of
With fear comes courage, with experience comes bravery, and with pain comes strength. One may assume that these traits are the exact characteristics a hero. However, heroism can come in many different forms. Victor Frankenstein, from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and Beowulf exemplify many different traits of heroism.
...ves after him. There is a measure of immortality in achievement, the only immortality man can seek.” (Jacobsen, 196)
In his paper “The Makropulos case: reflections on the tedium of immortality” Bernard Williams asserts his central claim that when immortality is feasible it is intolerable; further, it is reasonable to regard death as an evil. He argues his position by utilization of The Makropulos case, or the case of E.M. This character and circumstance is derived from a play by Karel Capek. E.M. is a woman of three hundred and forty two years. She has survived so long due to an immortality draught concocted by her father, a physician, long before the play’s action. E.M. explains her problem with immortality is that her unending life has become incredibly dull, her emotions have become cold and indifferent. She feels that in the end, everything has happened before and life has become unsatisfying. She stops taking the immortality draught and death overtakes her. This invokes the optimistic thought that immortality may be rewarding, if certain desires continue to be satisfied. Williams expands on the idea of these desires, called categorical desires and inherent motivation, but first we should confirm the views of death that make the conversation of immortality desirable.
...uare Temple at Eshnunna; both very different mediums of art. Although the mediums are different, both are greatly significant in understanding the cultures of the past. Within each of these works of art the theme of immortality is prevalent. One states the theme very plainly, whereas the other has acquired this theme as time has passed. Never-the-less the theme of immortality is important in understanding each of these works of art. It is this theme of immortality which connects these works of art to our modern day and the dream a lot of us have of living forever. Although many hold this dream, I think the artist Freddie Mercury said it best in his song “Who Wants to Live Forever” when he said “This world has only one sweet moment set aside for us.” Our life is very fleeting in the grand scheme of things, it’s this same fact that gives our life such great importance.
Bravery is the quality of a person who displays courage and fearlessness in the face of danger. Such qualities show splendor and magnificence in a person. Fear and terror sometimes hinder the determination someone can show. Overcoming this fear is what portrays bravery. In Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms, Frederick Henry shows bravery by freely joining the Italian army, risking his life for some ambulance drivers and swimming to freedom, being shot at the whole way.
The ability to show courage is very important to be a hero. Courage means the ability to do something that you know is difficult or dangerous, and being able to carry on in spite of danger
[III] Immortality: “through Art, and through Art only, that we can shield ourselves from the sordid perils of actual existence”
Death and Immortality in The Epic of Gilgamesh The search for immortality has been a major concern for many men and women all throughout history. True love and immortality in life would be a dream come true to many. To spend time with a special someone, the person one feels closest to, and never have to say good-bye would greatly appeal to most people. But when death steps into the picture, even with all the pain and devastation, one starts to re-evaluate themselves. In The Epic of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh explores the possibility of immortality following the saddening death of his friend and brother, Enkidu.
Finding the courage to be brave is not always easy is explained and illustrated with examples of Salva being brave. “He was crying so hard he could hardly get his breath. He could not think, he could barely see. He had to slow down and for the first time on the long journey, he began to lag behind the group.” ( Park, 53) While Salva was walking through the Akobo Desert he got injured by stepping on a rock. Salva kept walking even when he could hardly breathe and he was falling behind, because he could have gotten lost and wouldn’t know where to go, and would have to travel alone. In addition, Salva shows
Many people today hold on to the topic of immortality because they find it so difficult to say goodbye to a loved one. Placing flowers on graves is a popular way to remember the deceased. Even years after the person has died, the family members and friends still go to the gravesite to reminisce. People find it difficult to accept the fact that they will never see someone again. They want to believe that the person is still there. Gilgamesh had the same problem. He made the journey looking for his friend. He couldn?t deal with the fact that Enkidu had died. He wanted him to live forever. Gilgamesh even went as far as almost sacrificing his life to find him...
Socrates was a philosopher who was true to his word and his death was ultimately felt by his closest friends and followers. In Phaedo, Socrates is met with his closest friends during his final hours as they await his death. At this point Socrates is prepared for death and seems to welcome it. Although death may seem like a scary inevitable fate that we all must face at one point; Socrates saw death as a privilege mainly because he believed that the soul was immortal. As a result, Socrates provides arguments as to why he believed the soul was immortal and even though all his arguments lacked unconvincing evidence, he does bring up good points. In this paper I will talk about Socrates’ most and least convincing arguments on immortality, and explain what Socrates’ problem was with Anaxagoras.
Atticus Finch, from To Kill A Mockingbird, once said, “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting this idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.” History has seen many true heroes --both real and fictional-- such as Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr, and Atticus Finch. True heroes appear to have three common attributes: being meticulous, courageous, and having a desire to rectify a society. Among these heroes is Prince Hamlet. While some people may state that Hamlet is a coward because he isn’t rash, he sits in self-pity, and he has murderous tendencies, he is, in fact, a hero due to being meticulous, courageous, and his desire to rectify Denmark.
