The EdFirst Foundation has provided K-12 students from low-income families from inner cities with mentoring, afterschool programs and among other resources. In the ten cities EdFirst operates, any child is qualified for the program. All services are free for children from families that rank below the federal poverty line; meanwhile, families ranked above the poverty line receiving the services are discounted between $25 and $75 per year.

98% of the parents of the program participants were “extremely satisfied” with our services. We continue to strive and prepare our students into the real world, as they become young adults. Recently, I have commission several third-party to evaluate our foundation performance. An independent evaluator identified the impacts on the students:
• Reading levels improved by 1.4 grade levels after six months of active participation.
• Reading levels improved by 2.3 grade levels after twelve months of active participation.
• Math scores improved by 1.9 grade levels after six months of active participation.
• Math scores improved by 2.6 grade levels after twelve months of active participation.
Unfortunately, our donation has dropped in 6% in the last quarter and nearly 23% in the last two years. We have reached our limits in our financial budget as it result in keeping our expenses low. We have sustained significant costs to supply textbooks and other curricular materials, renting and owning numerous education centers, providing transportation to each center for program volunteers and participants, and run countless extra curriculum afterschool

Thornton Fractional South High School represents a diverse school building in the South Suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. We consist of a traditional 9th through 12th grade building with the exception of busing students to the District 215 Tech Center for vocational classes. We share these resources with our sister school TF North. Although we consistently outperform TFN, we are behind the state averages on both the ACT and the PSAE. On the ACT, we are below the state average on the composite score as well as on all three recorded sub-categories. We were closest to the state average in Science and the furthest in Reading. As for the PSAE test to measure those students meeting and exceeding standards, we are again behind the state average. TFS averaged 40.5% of students tested to meet or exceed standards. Meanwhile, the State of Illinois average was 53%. Currently, we are on the Academic Watch Status year 2. We were unable to meet the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) or the Safe Harbor Target Goal for Reading and Mathematics which are the two target areas. Our goal as a school is to reach the AYP and attempt to reach and exceed the state averages on the ACT and PSAE.
One of the biggest issues that many students and parents have concerning college education is the cost. Due to the state of the economy, affording college has become very difficult. Fortunately, the government is able to provide financial assistance in addition to the University’s own financial aid. Case is a private institution which means that it costs more compared to a public college. The tuition for Case was approximately, $38,000 in 2007 not including living or book expenses. Even though there was a tuition rate increase for every following year. The only way I was able to afford the tuition at Case was because of the scholarship I earned. In addition, I received federal grants and a substantial amount of aid from the University. I did not have a free ride but I received a great deal of financial help to pay for my college education.

Dear District Superintendant: The Tamalpais Union High School District (TUHSD) is one of those districts that have seen fallen property values in Marin, dysfunctional, and fiscal chaos in Sacramento. As a result of the severe economic downturn and the devastating cuts to education from the state of California, the TUHSD needs to reduce operating cost by 20% within five years to have a balanced budget for the 2014-2015 school year. THUSD annual budget is $55 million dollars. Operations is half that, or $27.5 million. The cost reduction goal is 20% within the operating budget lower than that provided in 2009-2010, which equates to a $5.5 million dollar reduction to balance the budget for 2014-2015 school year.
School funding is a recurring issue in the modern era. Debates ranging from give schools more money, to get rid of the system in place and reform a new idea have been plaguing the world over the years. “The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, signed in 2009, provided more than $100 billion in education aid to offset budget cuts..” (School Finance). Later, “Congress provided an additional $10 billion in 2010 to avert mass teacher layoffs (Education Week, "Total Recovery Act")” (School Funding). These numbers are just a sample of the struggles in school funding, that is costing a ton of money to keep afloat. “There are many ways schools fund varying from state to state and even school to school. Income taxes, corporate taxes, sales taxes, and other fees provide 48 percent of the elementary and secondary school funds. 44 percent of local districts draw money from local property taxes. The federal government makes up approximately 8 percent of state education budgets. These funds are a dealt out on a per-student basis, and categorically to ensure enough resources for each special program or facility” (School Funding). These funds play a huge role in every student's education, either positive or negative. The three main areas that need to be addressed in the school budget are extracurricular funding, building and equipment maintenance, and last but not least staff funding.
The Trio Program here at Elgin Community College is to help students with disadvantaged backgrounds, such as documented disabilities (learning or physical), financial problems (low-income family/household) and those who are a 1st generation college student (parent(s)/legal guardian(s) didn’t graduate from a 4-year college). The Trio program provides 3 different programs, which is: (1) The Trio Student Services (SSS), (2) The Trio Student Services English as a second language (SSS/ESL), and (3) The Trio Upward Bound (UB).
...racy skills to function as adults, and we have a responsibility to our students to help them acquire those skills. We need to improve our weak characteristics of our campus and continue to use our strengths to develop new programs that will benefit our students’ abilities. If given the chance to improve my campus’s literacy programs, I would do whatever it took to make it a success and I would use multiple resources to find answers to questions that I could not answer. I would bring all these things together to make an after school literacy program a success.

Many people in the U.S. believe poverty is a major issue in other countries but fail to realize that there are high poverty rates at home as well. When looking at poverty there are many age groups that are affected at different levels, and one of the age groups that is dramatically impacted is children under the age of 18. This age group is specifically a sad one due to the fact that they cannot rely on themselves to get out of poverty. This results in many struggles for children and relying on programs and organizations for the help that they need. Last year, when applying for this same grant, we only had estimates of the challenges that would arise from this crisis. Today, we are feeling it in full force. In just the past two months, the unemployment rate in Clinton County has nearly doubled from 10% to over 19%. Unemployment and severance benefits have run out for many, at the same time that state and federal cutbacks of social service programs have made it more difficult for families to find support burdening these difficult times. Many who still have the opportunity to work are only able to receive part-time hours, or are taking furlough days to keep their jobs. The realities of our economic situation are deeply troubling, and the need for assistance could not be greater.
