In the events of Haiti thousands were left homeless. Leonard thought that maybe the world was conspiring against them. Where the people of haiti breaking something fundamental, or were they in the wrong place at the wrong time. Or was it something supplemental? Is it possible that the world works against them? Could the earth think they don't need to be a country anymore? Clearly, There is no way to know.
Why should we accept
it? What makes this world so powerful that we should just accept it. When I was young i refused to accept the fact that my cat had died, I just refused to think she had. Why can we not change the fact? We are human, we have the capability to innovate and adapt. Why can we not change the earth to our needs. Humans should not accept reality until that reality is forced upon them. But why is it only some peoples turn? Why don't we ever have a major earthquake in Worland, Or in Cody? Why does New York City never get a hurricane? Why can't the misery be spread around evenly? in my life time i have rarely seen anything bad happen to anyone in this town. Is life truly unfair? Why is the world cruel? Finally, i conclude by saying that we do not determine our fate. The world does not determine our fate. But the role of the dice does, anything can happen to anyone. Some are just not as lucky as others in the game of life. Others have the game played for them, so they don’t lose to soon. Why is the world cruel.
The Haiti earthquake that occurred on January 12, 2010 just fifteen miles south of the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince was a severely large-scale earthquake, at a magnitude of 7.0. The initial shock was then followed by a series of aftershocks with magnitudes ranging up to 5.9. Over three hundred thousand people died due to this extreme chaos. Many buildings collapsed and disintegrated under the force of the quake; both the cathedral and National Palace in Port-au-Prince were heavily damaged. In the aftermath of this tragedy, efforts to aid the people of Haiti with medical assistance, water, and food were hampered by the loss of communication lines as well as by roads blocked by debris. Over one million people were left homeless due to this quake. Two days after the earthquake, journalist Leonard Pitts wrote “Sometimes the Earth is Cruel,” an article describing how the people of Haiti responded to the disaster. In “Sometimes the Earth is Cruel,” a major theme is that some things are inevitable.

In our lives, we have had to learn how to handle people’s expectations of what we should be. Learning how to put yourself and your own well-being before other people’s demands. Often we are unable to meet the demands that people have set for us, which often creates the feeling of hopelessness because we could not do what they’ve wanted. This begins the downfall of our emotions, creating feelings that we aren’t good enough for the world anymore. Our bodies are set to put our self-preservation before trying to meet people’s demands, but their demands often are what affects our self-preservation. In “Death of a Salesman” by Arthur Miller, we get examples of this when it comes to one of the main characters, Willy Loman. Throughout the book, we watch and learn about how Willy doesn’t care about his self-preservation because he believes that there isn't anything positive in his life anymore and he doesn’t feel like he should be there. Life is not always fair. There is no real explanation for this. In almost all constitutions people are created equal but very rarely are all of them treated this way. But before the French revolution happened very few people even had these rights. Then when WW II came around the Jewish people were targeted by the Nazis. They were stripped of all their rights and basically became slaves to the Nazis party. The Nazis tried to rid Europe of the Jewish people and if they had their way eventually the whole world would be free of this religious group. When France finally gave independence to Haiti, they did it for a price. After they paid that price, the US occupied them because of their location and many resources. Imagine sitting around a poker table, awaiting anxiously for the dealer to deal out the next cards, knowing that if you receive a good hand you will win. To your dismay, you stare in shock at the “bad” hand you received. However, it’s not necessarily the hand that is bad, but how you play the hand that can determine your fate. The same goes for life. In life, you will always be dealt good hands and bad hands, and sometimes, there is even a brick wall attached to these cards that symbolize the problems and struggles that accompany these cards. Even if you have a bad hand, if you play your cards the right way, the bad hand can transform into winning, successful hand. In The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch, one of the life lessons he advocates is, “We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand” (17). Moreover, there will always be a brick wall, or challenges, in the cards we were dealt, and according to Pausch, we possess the power to rip down the wall and to deal with how we react to the cards we are dealt.
Currently, almost two years ago Haiti was struck by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake. It sparked an international urge to help aid and relieve Haiti of its catastrophe. Not only governments in various countries reached out, but independent organizations as well. This disastrous event showed how the world could come together when their neighbor is in need. But prior to this 2010 earthquake, Haiti was already facing devastation other than a natural one - societal.
A person’s character is developed by the surroundings around them as well as their experiences. The Roman poet Horace quotes “…Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents in which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant…” I agree with the Roman poet, Horace, in that adversity has a way of waking talent from slumber. Adversity can encourage people in ways success and wealth cannot, as there is a benefit in the hardship. In Henrietta Lacks, by Rebecca Skloot, as well as Macbeth, by Shakespeare, adversity has developed the characters. From my observation, I strongly agree that experiences, such as hardship and danger, shape a person.
It is six in the morning at an Arizona prison. A prisoner named Jonas has been awoken by the prison bell, which sounds more like a horn, and signals that it is time for the prisoners to awake. Jonas quickly gets up, makes his bed and then stands at the door of his cell awaiting a prison guard who will be doing the daily check of his cell. While waiting for the guard, Jonas thinks to himself about what his day will be like, but he soon realizes that it will be the same as the day before, and the day before that, and the day before that, and so on. Jonas then grows quickly depressed, for he realizes, as he always does, that his life is filled with repetition and he is trapped by it. Like Jonas, many characters in the novel, The Scarlet Letter, experience the feeling of being caught in one way or another . Among those characters are Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, Pearl Prynne and Hester Prynne. These characters are truly affected by entrapment.
What lengths should one go to in order to survive? This is a question which has challenged the human race for generations and to which no satisfactory answer exists. In the modern world, this issue is examined theoretically, but rarely confronts individuals, with the exception of the most destitute. However, in harsh environments and forbidding territories, this matter becomes very real and pressing. Nature pays no attention to the arbitrary emotions of man, demanding only the forfeiture of the sorrowfully short life granted to him. Many would argue that in order to delay the inevitable conclusion awaiting every man, humans must act upon their primal intuition rather than their emotions. Jack London’s “The Law of Life” includes this naturalistic viewpoint that human survival instinct drives individuals more than feelings or compassion. London shows this through his protagonist Old Koshkoosh’s past experiences and tribal upbringing, his view on life, and the actions of his family members.
