Regarded as the oldest profession in the world, prostitution is a social problem which changes an individual (mostly women) from a decent person to a cheap commodity. Such a person needs love and respect from society although it’s never forth coming. Circumstances force people to engage in sexual activities in order to cater for their own needs and those of others. Prostitution draws support and criticism in equal measure. Prostitution greatly reduces sex violence more so for the female gender. People who engage in prostitution are vulnerable to violence from their customers. If prostitution could be legalized, the shadow of illegality would escape, this would make it easier for people to call police and file for complaints if they were infringed in any way. However, when it is still illegal, prostitutes cannot call the authorities for assistance, (Kuzma, 2013).
Legalizing prostitution would also make people who engage in the business healthier and comfortable. Prostitutes are always forced to forego use of condoms by some of their clients, if it was legalized, it would be easier for the sex workers to get tested and have a chance of practicing safer sex.
Prostitution though regarded as a crime, it is a crime where there are no victims. If the participants are adults and they agree on the terms and conditions, where is the crime in the act? If legalized, prostitution would be providing the government with an extra source of income for running recurrent expenditure. Legalization of prostitution would also save the government some enforcement resources. To investigate and keeping on monitoring prostitution activities is a costly affair. Activities such as wiretapping to intercepting of emails is a costly affair which the authorities need not to be engaging in, such resources could be used in other nation building activities, (Weitzer, 2011).
While by legalizing prostitution does not mean that the injustices in the sex industry have been solved, it is just a starting point. The problem can be addressed easily and effectively if prostitution was not an underground crime.
Conclusion:
That said and done, it is important to understand that prostitution is going away any time soon. There will also be those kinky and lonely men in need for sex and a woman willing to offer their bodies as long as there is a pay. Let’s just legalize and regulate it and then we can control it the same way alcohol and tobacco business is conducted anywhere in the world.
