Lee De Forest
Lee De Forest was born Aug. 26, 1873, Council Bluffs, Iowa. De Forest was the son of a Congregational minister. His father moved the family to Alabama and there assumed the presidency of the nearly bankrupt Talladega College for Negroes. Excluded by citizens of the white community who resented his father's efforts to educate blacks, Lee and his brother and sister made friends from among the black children of the town and spent a happy although sternly disciplined childhood in this rural community. (Kraeuter, 74). As a child he was fascinated with machinery and was often excited when hearing of the many technological advances during the late 19th century. He began tinkering and inventing things even in high school, often trying to build things that he could sell for money. By the age of 13 he was an enthusiastic inventor of mechanical gadgets such as a miniature blast furnace and locomotive, and a working silverplating apparatus. His father had planned for him to follow him in a career in the clergy, but Lee wanted to go to school for science and, in 1893, enrolled at the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale University, one of the few institutions in the United States then offering a first-class scientific education. Lincoln enrolled in electrical engineering at Ohio State University in 1902. During those years at Ohio State he was captain of the football team, which helped his leadership skills grow. Unfortunately in 1907 he had to leave Ohio State a semester before graduation because of typhoid fever. He was awarded his degree in 1926 (Sorry). Unlike Lincoln, Johnson did not get her education from going to school and getting a degree. She learned about welding from her husband because they had to move to Prichard so her husband could get a job on the docks as a welder. In "A Lady in a Machine-Shop," Susan Bivin Aller uses creativity, determination, and confidence to demonstrate how they led Margaret Knight to succession as an inventor. Knight and her family moved to Manchester, New Hampshire when she was at a young age. At the age of twelve, Knight witnessed a mill worker injured by a steel-tipped shuttle. This motivated her to create a safety mechanism, her first invention, to prevent any further injuries in cotton mills.
A graduate from Yale University had thoughts of becoming a lawyer, but he needed a job urgently. After a tutoring job fell through, he accepted a position on a plantation in Georgia. His employer, Catherine Green, saw much talent in him and encouraged him to find a way to make cotton profitable. He promptly began working on a solution to the problem of separating the seeds from the cotton. On March 14, 1794, Eli Whitney was granted a patent for the cotton gin.1 The cotton gin impacted American industry and slavery changing the course of American history.

In conclusion, the Rampart scandal was terrible for LAPD’s image and reputation, it was terrible for the people who were harassed by the police, and it was bad for the officers who were sucked into being corrupt and unethical. Throughout this paper there is a resounding aspect of supervision. With better supervision there may be some dislike, but it will keep the department in order and it will create the cohesiveness that a department needs to be successful.
What is ethics? Ethics are the philosophical principles of good verses bad moral behavior. It is a guideline to help people make decisions or make a judgment calls. There are two main types of ethical principles that will be discussed in this paper, and how they are applied to the decision making process. They are Deontological and Utilitarian. Deontological ethics are based on the righteousness or wrongness of the action-taking place. It does not base itself on the bad or good consequences that come from the action. Immanuel Kant introduced deontological ethics in the 18th century. Kant believed that every decision or action made by a person had to be evaluated by his or her moral duty. In chapter 4, Lakwete depicts the thirty-year transition from the roller to saw gin as more evolutionary that revolutionary. Whitney's invention was an important advance in cotton gin history, but many southerners before and after Whitney played vital roles in the development of the machine. In a direct writing style, Lakwete presents in-depth and wide-ranging research with helpful summaries at the beginning and end of each chapter. She painstakingly explains complicated technological issues, including the nuts and bolts of each machine, while providing the reader with context. This is an important book, and now in paperback form, a good candidate for graduate level courses. As is evident in this reviewer's attempt to summarize her chapters, Lakwete had her work cut out for her in trying to explain this complex industry and its even more complex machines. While Inventing the Cotton Gin serves as an exciting revision and raises even more exciting questions, Lakwete's detailed exploration of cotton ginning makes for slow reading for those not technologically inclined. It is understandable that Lakwete should demonstrate the differences between Whitney's machine and its predecessors and successors, and it is helpful to reveal the evolutions in production, marketing, and the needs of planters. But this reviewer would have preferred less detail and more summary, guidance, and context. Lakwete documents many cases of, and raises tantalizing questions about, southern industrialization, but readers of H-Southern-Industry will find themselves wanting more. Specifically, she declares in the preface that the "innovative southern gin industry belies constructions of failure read back from 1865. Instead, it forces a reconciliation of an industrializing, modernizing, and slave labor-based South" (p. ix). ...es have found that often police misconduct is learned behavior from in his organization. Police culture is defined and broken down by artifacts. Artifacts like learning police jargon, how to talk on their radio, how to write a report. I think a counter act to this problem is more community policing. Officers should volunteer a little time reach back out to the community, getting to know the people of the community will help how people view police culture and actually help the culture also. I don’t want to be a cop so I feel this information is not relevant to my field of chose.
This was a time where different machinery was created to make finished goods (The Market Revolution, n.d.). There were a few gentlemen that plaid a part in the industrialization. A gentleman name Cyrus McCormick developed and sold a machine called the reaper that made harvesting crops faster. In order to have effective policing I believe integrity and ethics play a huge part in helping build trust within communities. Sound conduct by police improves community interactions, enhances communication, and promotes shared responsibility for addressing crime and disorder. There are three ways that police departments can strengthen community relationships just by training officers about procedural justice, bias reduction, and racial reconciliation. If we implement these concepts, we can create an environment in which effective partnerships between the police and citizens can flourish.
Back in 1885 Samuel Yellen was born in Galicia, Poland. When he was a little boy he was known as an American master blacksmith. When Yellen was only eleven years old he was apprenticed to an iron master that he completed in five short years. Samuel Yellen or otherwise known as the “Devil,” had tremendous working habits and a great sense of humor. He left Poland and decided to travel through Europe. When he was in England he left there to depart to the Americas in 1906. A year later he was enrolled at Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art. He began to take classes and within that same year he became a professor and remained there until 1919.
Jan Ernst Matzeliger was born on September 15, 1852, in Paramaribo, Suriname—known at the time as Dutch Guiana. Matzeliger's father was a Dutch engineer, and his mother was Surinamese. Showing mechanical aptitude at a young age, Matzeliger began working in machine shops supervised by his father at the age of 10. At 19, he left Suriname to see the world as a sailor on an East Indian merchant ship. In 1873, he settled in Philadelphia (www.biography.com). The definition of ethical behavior usually includes the a few things that are the known standards and expectations of society, including trustworthiness, respectfulness and most importantly humility. Usually, these ethical standards are also accepted as professional standards. For law enforcement officers, these standards also include integrity and courageousness. According to an arrival written by the United States Department of Justice, entitled “Ethics and Integrity”, all of these characteristics are fundamental to the effectiveness of police officers and the connections they strive to build with the communities they work in.
In 1881, Taylor (pictured below) started his time study efforts. Taylor’s journey to this point was unusual. He came from a wealthy family and had chance to attend Harvard University, but instead started as an apprentice at a machine shop. Later he began his career at Midvale Steel Works as a laborer, and moved up to time clerk, journeyman, lathe operator, gang boss, and foreman of the machine shop. During this time Taylor became interested in the proper method to do the certain jobs and what was considered a fair day’s work for the men under his supervision.
