The article “Leaving Omelas: Questions of Faith and Understanding,” by Jerre Collins, draws attention to the fact that the short story “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas,” by Ursula Le Guin, has not impacted Western thought despite its literary merit. technique called “a narrative theodicy” (Collins 527). Collins explains Le Guin’s narrative technique to show the high quality and seriousness of the work. The second and third points that Collins explores is how the story “works as a challenge to our conscience, and then suggest two factors that limit the radicality of that challenge” (525). This is done by examine the situation of the child and then comparing it to the West’s economic system and religious stories that focus on the suffering of one for the happiness of many. By doing so Collins articulates that Le Guin hopes to challenge the Western idea that “rationalizations of exploitation are accounted for by a hidden link between redemption-theology and complacency about exploitation” (531). The articulation of this point challenges the Western conscience just as the work intended. The second hindrance to Le Guin’s work is the actual Bible and the idea of resurrection it presents (Collins 532). Those that choose to leave Omelas are seen as “going from life into death” (Collins 532). This presents a problematic viewpoint as it “indirectly buttresses the very scapegoat theodicy she hopes to undermine” (Collins 532). By articulating these two points Collins accurately answers the questions as to why “Those Who Walk Away from Omelas” has not caused an impact on Western society and thought despite it being written for that purpose. The article “The Talking Porcupine Liberates Utopia: Le Guin’s ‘Omelas’ as Pretext to the Dance,” by Kenneth Roemer, focuses on the effects of the narrative style used by Le Guin in “Those Who Walk Away from Omelas.” Roemer believes if there is ore “focus on the first-person narrator, then ‘Omelas’ becomes one of the most significant modern utopian texts” (7).
This argument is supported by the unique position of the narrator they are not an “’objective’ observer” but instead “She is an entrapped cinematographer” (8). The narrator portrays a world through a biased voice making it seem that much more splendid and magnificent. After finishing the description of the utopia, the narrator switches to first person and begins asking questions directed at the audience about the town. These questions “pose real ethical, linguistic, and perceptual problems involved in describing and conceptualizing utopia during the last 20th century” (Roemer 8). By allowing the audience to build the town the narrator allows for the “justification for the brevity and vagueness of the narrative” (Roemer 10). The narrator is made to look even more unreliable by her word choice and “admits her ignorance about many aspects of the Omelas system” (Roemer 10). By using this kind of narrative voice the story becomes more believable and offers a change from previous utopian works it is not offers “a memorable encounter with a modern utopian text” but also causes the audience to become part of “the creation of utopias that may involve unexpected moral responsibilities” (Roemer
12).
In doing this it creates this idea around Omelas as this happy, peaceful utopian society that seems wonderful to live in. There are no cars or advanced technology like central heating or washing machines but the people in Omelas are happy and live in comfort and they don’t base this happiness on technology or possessions like today's society. She described it as having “a long and happy career of being used by teachers to upset students and make them argue fiercely about morality.” The city of Omelas is the most magical, idyllic place anyone’s imagination could possibly conjure. When Omelans come of age, they visit this child and are educated about its existence. They then make a decision on whether to stay in Omelas, knowing that the happiness of the city rests upon the suffering of an innocent victim, or to walk away from Omelas forever.

Le Guin’s unrelenting pursuit of making the reader imagine a rich, happy and festival abundant society mushrooms and ultimately climaxes with the introduction of the outlet for all of Omelas’ avoided misfortune. Le Guin then introduces a coming of age ritual in which innocent adolescents of the city are made aware of the byproduct of their happiness. She advances with a scenario where most of these adolescents are extremely burdened at first but later devise a rationalization for the “wretched one’s” situation. Le Guin has imagined a possible contemporary Utilitarian society with the goal to maximize the welfare of the greatest number of people. On the contrary, Kant would argue that using the child as a mere means is wrong and argue that the living conditions of the child are not universalizable. The citizens of Omelas must face this moral dilemma for all of their lives or instead choose to silently escape the city altogether.
In order to live their “perfect” lives, the citizens of Omelas must accept the suffering of the child. Making the right ethical decision is difficult, but necessary to end the injustice of the society. Failing to overcome the ethical issues in the city of Omelas is displayed through three different characters in the story. There are those who choose to ignore the situation, those who observe the child in misery, and those who feel that they must walk away. In the story “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” characters fail to overcome the ethical issues in their society, and the reader is taught the importance of moral responsibility and the implications of the difficult task of making the right ethical decision.

It is also located by the sea so there are big beautiful boats located the sea in this city. It is a city like any other city where people gathers together to celebrate and have fun. You can tell that there is a lot of love in this city because there is no need for police or government official. In the short story The Ones Who Walk Away from the Omelas, Ursula Le Guin illustrates a community that is joyous. However, the community is torn because the source of their happiness is due to the choosing of an unfortunate child that resides in a basement under of the beautiful public buildings of Omelas neglected and barely ever eating. Le Guin explanation that although the people of the community are very happy, they are also very well aware of what is providing them that happiness. He writes, “all know [the child] is there… They all know that it has to be there. Or, do they continue to live in Omelas and ignore the harsh conditions that this young boy is exposed to.
