Many different computer operating systems have been used in the past or are being used on current computers. You may have even used or heard of MS-DOS, Mac operating systems, Solaris, MorphOS, Unix, Android, and/or the Microsoft Windows operating system. The Microsoft Windows operating system is the most well-known and most frequently used operating system among computer users today; however, there is another operating system that was developed by Linus Torvalds, a software engineer and hacker from Finland, that can be advantageous to learn despite it being developed in the early 1990s (Goldsborough, 2011, p. 12).
The Linux operating system, while not maybe as well-known as the Windows operating system or the Mac operating system, may offer advantages to those who take upon the task of learning how to use this operating system. The advantages of taking a course on the Linux operating system may prove to expand the opportunities of the Linux student in their future careers. Based on the key findings from the 2012 Linux Jobs Survey and Report completed by the Linux Foundation, the “demand for Linux talent is on the rise, but finding those professionals is difficult” (Dice &The Linux Foundation, 2012). With the demand for Linux professionals being on the rise and the availability of Linux professionals not growing as steadily, the individual who learns the Linux operating system may become an invaluable asset to a corporation seeking Linux professionals. This supply-and-demand of the skilled Linux professional could provide for many lucrative outcomes especially in the field of mobile technology including tablets, PDAs, and smartphones.

I was very interested in computers and technology as a child, both playing games and building fake parts for them. Still in elementary school, I was fascinated by these computing machines, spending hours on end working with DOS to satisfy my curiosity. Around my middle school years, Windows became graphical, and I found interest in even more computer games with even greater experiences and capabilities. Windows was the dominant operating system at the time, but I was soon to find there was a whole different world out there of operating systems. About a month ago I attended a dinner with some close friends. As we all sat in the restaurant waiting for drink orders to be taken, I looked around the table and what I saw made me feel more than a little annoyed considering I had not seen some of these people (or spoken to some of them) in over a month. Everyone at the table had sat down and immediately took out their phone. After reading the article “Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation?”, by Jean M. Twenge, the feelings experienced that evening at dinner were validated and broadened by the depth and scope of the article. Jean Twenge was persuasive because of the statistical data in her article.

As the internet is becoming faster and faster, an operating system (OS) is needed to manage the data in computers. An Operating system can be considered to be a set of programed codes that are created to control hardware such as computers. In 1985 Windows was established as an operating system and a year earlier Mac OS was established, and they have dominated the market of the computer programs since that time. Although, many companies have provided other operating systems, most users still prefer Mac as the most secured system and windows as it provides more multiple functions. Many people in today’s society rely on technology to help us with our daily lives and help us stay connected to family, friends, and other people. The advancements in today’s cell phone technology is very complex and made to be efficient for their owners, allowing them to surf the net and IM message people instantly. Cellphones in particular have developed very fast in the past 15 years. From my childhood, cell phones have evolved from the old school Nokia bricks that allowed texts, calls, and simple graphic games, to todays I-Phones that have higher computable capabilities than some computers. In the United States alone, there is an estimated population of around 297 million people, and 197 million people are subscribed to cell phone companies (Starr). With so many people in today’s society with so much power and opportunity in the palm of their hands, we shouldn’t forget that “With great power comes great responsibility” –Voltaire.
