According to a definition found in ADRP 6-22, leadership is the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation to accomplish the mission and improve the organization. This is a definition that it seems to only apply to the Army but we must be leaders not only to soldiers and peers in our organization but in life. Many soldiers and leaders have read the book definition but only a few have taken the basic concept and made it their own by giving it a real tangible meaning. In the next few paragraphs I will explain how I was able to become one of those few who have been able to take a book definition and transform it into words of action. I will achieve this by sharing experiences and how I overcame adversity by turning negative into positive, and how my leadership has evolved over the years.
A leader is someone who seeks and gains one’s trust, someone who influences and inspires those around him without expecting any recognition. Introduction According to the Oxford Dictionary, a leader is defined as “the person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country” (Oxford Dictionaries, 2013). Though there is a definition for what a leader is, people still have different ideas about what a leader should be and how he or she should act. There has never been a concrete idea of what a leader is; the only thing we know is that this person is the one in charge of the unit. We look at characteristics of those people we see as leaders and use those attributes to compare other people to see if they are able to be as good as, or even better than, those aforementioned leaders. Being a leader is no simple task. During my Eagle Scout project, I lead a range of people, from adults to youth. Leadership is a social process shared among all members of a group. Leadership development comes through experience. We all learn from our different experiences. Whether positive or negative, they are our tools for growth and development.
As an officer in the United States Army, it has been imperative for me to understand every facet of leadership and why it remains important to be an effective leader. During this course, I have learned some valuable lessons about myself as a leader and how I can improve on my leadership ability in the future. The journal entries along with the understanding of available leadership theories have been an integral part of my learning during this course. For all of the journals and assessments that I completed, I feel it has given me a good understanding of my current leadership status and my future potential as a leader. All of the specific assessments looked at several areas in regards to leadership; these assessments covered several separate focus areas and identified my overall strengths and weaknesses as a leader. Over the course of this paper I will briefly discuss each one of these assessments and journal entries as they pertained to me and my leadership.

Many people associate leadership with a specific job title or form of power within an organization. However, through personal experience, I have concluded that leadership can come in many forms and position as well as from multiple sources of roles and job titles both with and without power.
