Summary In Layoverland by Gabby Noone, the main character Beatrice Fox dies in a car accident and finds herself in a limbo-like afterlife where she must help other souls accept their deaths to move on. This afterlife is called Layoverland. She was assigned to guide 500 souls, one of the souls she meets is Caleb, who died in the same accident, they develop a meaningful bond despite the initial conflicts they had. Through her interactions and challenges in Layoverland, Beatrice not only helps the other souls, but also confronts her own unresolved issues. Like something good Gabby Noone did, she gave Layoverland a mix of humor as well as emotional depth. This created a unique story that addressed the themes of acceptance and personal growth which …show more content…
This adds layers and enhances the narrative. It also should have provided more details about Layoverland, this could enhance the reader's immersion and understanding of the setting. Other than those things, I felt that it was very well written. Golden Line My favorite line from the book which really spoke to me was “Sometimes you have to let go of the life you wanted in order to make room for the life you have.” This line from the book really captures the central theme of acceptance and personal growth as it is shown throughout the book. Not only that, but I agree with that quote, and I feel like people should live that way. They should be happy with the life they have and make the most of what they have, instead of thinking of having a better life. How do relationships shape or change our sense of loyalty, values, and actions? Through her relationships with other souls in Layoverland, Beatrice's values shift from self-centeredness to a more unselfish outlook. She learns to appreciate the importance of forgiveness and understanding, reshaping her moral compass. The relationships Beatrice forms also compels her to take actions that are more selfless and compassionate. Helping others confront their unresolved issues forces her to reflect on her own life, leading her to act in ways that prioritize the well-being of
I have only read four books my entire life for school, but this is one is the best I have read. There were numerous things that I learned from the book. The one that hit me the hardest was it's hard to see people living in shame because they can cover it up really well, almost like it doesn’t bother them at all. I grew up in a middle class family and simply didn't understand what it meant to be so broke that you are ashamed to be around people who have money. The thought never crossed my mind, ever.
I can relate this book to my life in many ways; it was easier for me to relate to this book because were both 18 year old girls who want to live life the right way. Also I don’t want to live life trying to be like everyone else, so this was really encouraging to me. A part that helped me was the part about confidence and how important that is. Its important to have confidence in your faith because say you get in a situation you can protect your faith and stand up for what you believe. Another part that I can really apply to my life was how when people were talking about her she didn’t even beg to know. Personally whenever I hear that someone was talking about me, I really want to know what they said! This helped me to learn that why fill my brain with negativity sinful gossip, because that’s not what Jesus would do.
If my life had no purpose, no individuality, and no happiness, I would not want to live. This book teaches the importance of self expression and independence. If we did not have these necessities, then life would be like those in this novel. Empty, redundant, and fearful. The quotes above show how different life can be without our basic freedoms. This novel was very interesting and it shows, no matter how dismal a situation is, there is always a way out if you never give up, even if you have to do it alone.
The theme of this novel is to look at the good you do in life and how it carries over after your death. The moral of the book is; "People can make changes in their lives whenever they really want to, even right up to the end."
Response: This sentence is my favorite and was the one which stayed in my mind long after I was done with the book. It is very emotional and shows us how important a persons name is and how we shouldn’t attach false statements to it, because we cannot really change it.
It could be said that the book goes beyond the theme of teenage angst. It paints a vivid picture of self-knowledge and self-acceptance in the making.
Being a freshman in college we want be seen, but it also the fact that when I graduate I want to be remember. As humans we want to be immorality, but deep down we know we are going to die eventually, but that is what makes us human. We need to be able to see that and then, we can see that we can be remember. Change is a major part of the book and this the quote, as human we are afeard of change, to be seen we have to change so we can be seen, and for me that is a scary thought, I am so use to can environment live my bed room back home it was a big change moving into the dorms at
...She writes of the type of person that one can only hope exists in this world still. The message of her writing and philosophy is contained in a single phrase from the novel: “I swear by my life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine,” (731). This is an inspiration, awakening an inner voice and drive that impels each person to do their absolute best. It implores the soul of the reader to awaken, to become the ideal of the human spirit, and to rise until it can rise no higher. It is a call to anyone with reason, anyone with the strength to be an Atlas, and it is reminding him or her of their duty to live up to the individual potential. For as long as there are those who would hear the message, there will still be hope for mankind.
... friendship, but brings forth a new meaning to devotion, fidelity, and the needs of emotional endurance.
“Although tragedy and loss are regrettable commonplace, we aren’t measured by what happens to us but rather by how we respond to it” written by Steve Pemberton in A Chance in the World. This is my favorite quote from the novel. A Chance in the World was an eye opening book for me to read, and I enjoyed every minute of it. Many things stood out to me in the book, one being that each chapter would start with a quote from a different book, and that related back to how much books saved his life. Another thing that stood out to me was how throughout the chapter he would ask himself questions, and those questions were never answered but it was like he was sharing his thoughts with reader. The reason these book was eye opening was because my father, gave up his parental rights at age five because of drugs, and even though our situations are only slightly similar hearing his story and how he overcame all his struggles made me realize how I can get over my own problems with the past. The novel was a tear jerker from reading how the Robinsons abused him, how he first struggled with college and how each side of his family had so much pain and sorrow. Steve Pemberton overcame every
The theme of this book is that the human capacity to adapt to and find happiness in the most difficult circumstances. Each character in the novel shows this in their way. For instance, their family is randomly taken from their home and forced to work but they still remain a close nit family. In addition, they even manage to stick together after being separated for one of their own. These show how even in the darkest time they still manage to find a glimmer of hope and they pursued on.
...readers on their toes from what was going to happen next. When Colin was depressed that he had lost yet another girl he loved, Katherine nineteen, Hassan showed up to commiserate with him. However, Hassan was not there simply to sympathize with Colin, he was there on a mission. “You have a very complicated problem with a very simple solution” Hassan said (Green 11). The reader had to keep reading to see what Hassan meant about the solution to Colin’s problem. The solution ended up being a road trip.
It is lines like these that helped this novel soar in popularity among the Generation X' crowd. It is because people feel trapped in their jobs and material lives. We go to work, we do what we're told, we buy the things they tell us to buy, but seldom do these things bring meaning to our lives. Because the novel speaks to such a large audience of young people, it has become an important statement regarding modern culture.
How to give a summary of such a powerful book seems to me to be beyond comprehension. The book has left me so full of life, so committed to changing the way I behave, the way I think, the way I feel about life, death, how I treat others, and how I spend the hours of everyday. The book has left me with thousands of zooming thoughts in my head, like moths circling a light bulb, just trying to feel the soothing heat being radiated from it’s ember glow. The way I feel after reading this book, must be how an immigrant felt when taking those first steps onto American soil. Extremely overwhelmed yet so filled with anticipation for the new life they can lead, if only they make the right choices for themselves, and not fall into the pitfalls of society’s culture, but make a culture of their own. “ Invest in the human family. Invest in people. Build a community of those you love and who love you”
I would recommend this book to everyone because it is interesting and it made me reflect about whom I am, and what I am doing with my life. It made me think about all the risk that I did not take because I was afraid of what others think. It made me realize that sometimes I need to be selfish with what I want. It gave me the pleasured to rethink about all the things that I did not say because I thought that it did not worth it. Sometimes it is difficult to understand all those things without being close to death. This book teaches me how can I be happy and be crazy because sometimes what we really thing is insane could be the most normal thing for others. It thought me to not be like everyone else if not to be different because that is only thing that could make us happy.
