Law enforcement should be allowed to defend themselves without being afraid of the consequences. Society and the media dictate what should be done more than anything, the legality and punishment often ruin lives more than they save them. If this continues to happen nobody will want to become a law enforcement officer anymore and without the law enforcement officer the world would fall into chaos. I predict in the future there will be no Law enforcement to help people that actually need the help. Without law enforcement, the world would be full of criminals out to do no good people would be causing havoc around the clock.
Being a law enforcement officer is a difficult job everyone hates them as soon as they put their uniform on and some people

“on the one hand, many of our values that we act upon in our day-to-day lives emerge from received opinions we have not thought much about.” (Bloom 341) People that break the law often feel like they did nothing wrong or did not deserve to be caught. Where if a law enforcement officer does one thing wrong they can lose a case that put some criminal behind bars. The people with more money are more likely to get away with stuff just because they have money. This should not matter, but it does multiple dangerous criminals have walked free because they have had the money to fight and find one minor thing wrong this is frustrating to a law enforcement. “It is assumed that an officer will use force, particularly unnecessary force when a suspect challenges the authority of the officer. Fleeing from an officer is interpreted as a challenge to the officer’s authority to stop the suspect. When the suspect is caught by the officer it is likely that the suspect will receive a slap or beating.” (Phillips 201) If not changed more law enforcement officers will grow tired and either lose interest or become more …show more content…
The use of law enforcement officers over the last decade has reduced every crime static recorded. From the beginning of time with the first crime Cain and Abel, history has shown what can happen. Like it or not the US is one of the safest countries to live in. Imagine living in a society where only the strong or powerful are the rule of law. Like Mexico, Central America or any other third world country. I believe that human beings as a race might survive, but I don't believe that civilization and civilized society would survive. There are too many people in the world who are predatory. Even if they aren't the majority, without police, they would take advantage of the kinder people in society right away. If they do it a lot now with police, I shudder to think of what it would be like without
...s not warrant abandoning traditional legal methodologies and prized freedom and entitlement to execute it. Officers should be the defenders of the law and the fundamental tool to implement the law. They cannot disregard the law in the pretense of a better society.
It is easy for police to get caught up in the idea that it is them against the rest of society (Barkan, 2012). Many citizens in today’s democratic society have a negative or fearful view of our law enforcement. Think back to grade school, who was that one kid in class that everyone was annoyed by or despised? Most people would answer the teacher’s pet or the tattletale. We have grown up from a young age to have a negative view towards those that get us into trouble when we think we can get away with something we know is wrong. In the adult world, the police force can equate to those tattletales.
...clude stressful work, long hours, and a lot of pressure from other law enforcement professionals. With devoted time and education you will notice that the good weighs out bad.
In many areas police have a hard time keeping order because certain people might get offended, police need to be able to do their job properly with enough force to subdue a criminal; but, they also have to be careful is it going to be called racial profiling, using excessive force. Then we have the courts will the judge give this three time felon the maximum sentence or is he going to get a slap on the wrist and just probation because the prisons are full. We as a nation need to stop worrying about if someone’s feeling get hurt, and start handing out proper
Cops have to use physical force on criminals but is excessive force needed for unarmed criminals. Is it necessary to shoot at an unarmed man 41 times because he made a suspicious move? I know police officers have their reasons, sometimes you have to be in their shoes to understand what they are facing that might be a threat to their life or others around the scene. Its understood, force is sometimes necessary to refrain criminals when they get out of line, or put the police officers life endanger. Inherent criminality; the belief that people who commit crimes are animals and incapable of rehabilitation, leads police to treat people brutally. . Recent statistics published by the Stolen Lives Project estimate that the number of cases in the United States relating to police brutality has reached the thousands, but these statistics come with a disclaimer many, if not most, of these instances are never reported due to fear of reprisal. The fact is there are many cases of police brutality and corruption. Some are not good enough to make it to the front page of the newspaper or to the news. Not enough is being done; lack of community efforts are being made to help. Justice has to be served and the code of silence needs to be broken. Some cops need to be put behind bars. The only way to clean up the city or community is to clean up all the dirty cops. Police brutality is a cruel, inhumane injustice that can be prohibited. No one needs to be afraid or be worried about being intimidated by police and about coming foward with information. Without a doubt we have the good cops and bad cops, about a fraction of those cops still go abusing their authority to innocent people. If it were not for bystanders witnessing the brutality cops put on people many cases wouldn’t be what they are today. Fresno Police Department
The “how” part comes into play with every aspect of a police officer’s job. From placing someone under arrest to using physical or deadly force, the choice on how to handle situations is in the hands of the officer (Dempsey & Frost, 2014). This is done due to the “why” of police discretion. There are seven reasons given by Sheehan and Cordner as to why police discretion is used (Dempsey & Frost, 2014). The first reason given is that “if the police attempted to enforce all the laws all the time, they would be in the station house or court all the time and would not be on the street maintaining order or protecting life and property” (Dempsey & Frost, 204, p. 141)Police officers cannot protect the public if they are not there. The constant back and forth with taking criminals in for every crime the commit and having to constantly be in court, prevents them from holding all aspects of their jobs. The other reasons cover laws that are not to be “strictly enforced all of the time”, “some laws are vague and ill-defined”, “most violations of the law are minor”, enforcing “all of the laws, all of the time would alienate the public from the police”, the courts, jails, and prisons would become overwhelmed, and because “the police have so many duties to perform and such limited resources that good judgment must be exercised in when, where, and how they enforce the law” (Dempsey & Frost, 2014, p. 141-142). There are
In our society, our security and protection is in the hands of the police. When there is a disturbance in society, we immediately dial 911 to get police officers in the scene of the crime for help. Police officers wear a uniform and a badge that symbolizes protection. Police officers are hired to enforce the laws that were placed, ensure the safety of civilians, and to detain anyone who does not follow or does not obey the laws. Although, people and the media might disagree that police officers abuse their power or racially profile people for no reason, I have not yet come across those situations, nor has my family. In fact, most of my experiences with the criminal justice system has been helpful. Furthermore, once criminals are detained, it
Each year, more individuals are killed by civilians than by the police force. So why is society choosing to go against the police force, the ones who serve to protect? Police brutality has been exaggerated to the point that mankind is rushing to judge the actions of law enforcement before facts or evidence has been stated. The terms “necessary force” and “reasonable force” need to be better explained in order to resolve the conflicts between citizens and the police force. To prevent police brutality throughout America, individuals must choose to stand behind the police force instead of opposing them.
Every day law enforcement officials are faced with the possibility of being assaulted or killed while in the line of duty and when off duty. Officers are faced with the harsh reality that today may be their last day alive. This leads to a rush of adrenaline when responding to crimes or when they encounter various situations. Often this rush of adrenaline can cloud an officer’s judgment. Officers are then faced with the possibility of being accused of excessive force. Citizens often call an officers use of excessive force “police brutality” (Petrowski, 2005). Citizen’s opinion of law enforcement has often been linked to the media’s tactics of displaying officers using what appears to be excessive force during an arrest. This typically leads to citizens becoming outraged and creates an issue for the force. The question then arises as to what exactly is excessive force? While many citizens may characterize force as excessive, the law reflects the realities that officer’s face in making decisions to use force (Petrowski, 2005). Each complaint of excessive force has to be examined and a decision made based on the evidence and circumstances surrounding the case. It is the agency’s duty to gain control of police officers use of force in order
I believe officers in law enforcement are here to serve and protect the citizens of this country. Although as I stated before I also believe that there are still a few that are bad. The majority of them are good. For any kind of change to begin a number of factors need to be involved. The citizens need to use fairness.
Law enforcement is a career that is both violent and rewarding in many capacities. Justice needs to be served in law enforcement and they have a responsibility to uphold the law and serve the people in the community. Law enforcement is crucial in the world today as a global realm as life continues to be more complex and law enforcement struggles to combat many aspects of crime. In order to combat these problems and have a positive future in the criminal justice system, everyone must work together on a bigger scale.
One day in the distant future I want to become a police officer and eventually became a detective of some sort. But before becoming a detective one must be a patrol officer for the first few years of their career, and in this paper, it can hopefully give you some valuable information on how to start off being a patrol officer for the Gilbert Police Department.
In our times, the police have become the criminals. Some police are using their power to do bad things, and society has come to fear police. The law enforcement system needs change. The courts have failed the police, and the police have turn to other means of justice. We must stop the corruption in the police force.
Whether it is the simple things like arresting people, and whether it is the horrible things like shootings and beating people. Many say that officers are just doing their jobs and protecting people, but it is never okay with hurting innocent people. Many have been severely injured or even worse, dead because of the extreme force that some police officers are used in certain situations. Whether people want to admit it or not, police officers should not be using such force. I understand if someone is coming at them, or they are harming someone else and they can 't do anything but to shoot, but if an innocent, unarmed citizen is walking the streets of their neighborhood they should feel safe. Nobody, no matter who they are should ever feel threatened or scared to come out of their house because of a policeman. It is unfair that a lot of police officers get away with the abuse and murder while the victims and their families have to pay with the consequences. I do not understand how a male or female, no matter if they are a person of the law or not, can be okay with getting away with murdering an innocent human being. It is sickening to just think about. Police are supposed to protect the citizens, not harm them. How are people suppose to trust the police when they are the ones hurting everyone. And it is not just every police officers and I feel bad for the ones who get ridiculed because of the
Consider for once how lucky one is for not having the physical appearance of a criminal, and even tough such thing does not exist, America 's Police Department seem to have a pretty good idea of what a criminal should look like. As Benjamin Spock once said: "Most middle-class whites have no idea what it feels like to be subjected to police who are routinely suspicious, rude, belligerent, and brutal.” Thus, unfortunately, being victim of police 's power abuse is a reality that many people have been suffering from in the past years. The abuse of power by police officers is a known fact, and the government should address it by improving the selection processes of new officers, increasing monitorship, and implementing punishments.
