In the novel, “Speak” by Laurie Halse Anderson. Melinda, the protagonist, does not join a group at Merryweather High School. Lots of people join but don’t get into the group on the first day, but some people get lucky and get it. Once someone joins a group they will change, and probably won’t be the same person you knew before they join the particular group.
Moreover, Melinda doesn’t know anybody, but all she sees is people going in groups. On page 4 it says.”We fall into clans: Jocks.Country Clubbers, Idiot Savants, Cheerleaders, Human waste, Eurotrash Future Fascists of America, Big Hair Chix, the Martha's, Suffering Artists, Thespians Goths, Shredders. I am clanless” Even on the first day or week of school everyone goes their separate ways . Another thing I see in this quote is that people join all these clans because they can’t face that they can’t for make any new friends. They don’t want to face the difficulties in life that Melinda needed to go through in her first year of high school. The last thing I see in this quote is that there is different types of personalities in the school that they want to be known for. Well this situation refers to Heather to Melinda. All Heather sees in Melinda is a helping tool not a true friend. This shows how Heather changed and gets defined when she joined a group called that Marthas. On page 178 it says,” She and the other Junior Marthas are required to decorate the Route 11 holiday Inn ballroom for prom… the Junior Marthas have been laid waste by mononucleosis, leaving Heather all by herself.” Then Melinda says,”No” even though Heather offered to help Melinda redecorate her room. All Heather is asking is for Melinda to help her to do this, she isn’t asking Melinda as a friend to help
