Laser eye surgery is also referred to as laser corneal sculpting. It’s actually a medical procedure that normally makes use of a laser in order to reshape the surface of the eye. The main aim of undertaking this kind of surgery is to improve or actually correct hypermetropia(long sightedness),myopia(short-sightedness) and astigmatism(uneven curvature of the eye’s surface). Those individuals who undergo laser eye surgery still need to wear glasses or contact glasses regardless of the fact that their natural eye sight will have improved to greater extent.
Laser corneal sculpting procedures were for the first time performed over 30 years ago. The cornea is basically the transparent tissue that cover the front of the eye. It aids in control focusing.

Here the surgeon removes the outer layer of the cornea with a surgical blade or a blunt instrument. The Laser beam which is normally guided by a computer is then used to vaporize tiny amounts of tissue under the surface of the cornea. This procedure removes just enough tissue in order to reshape the cornea in a way that corrects vision.
Laser Assisted in situ Keratomileusis
The surgeon first cuts a flap in the cornea with a very sharp blade or a laser, and then lifts it and uses a computer-guided laser in order to remove calculated amount of tissue from the inside layers of the cornea.Afterwards, the flap is put back and the eye heals more quickly compared to the procedure above.
Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis
This is actually a variation of PRK and LASIK. Here the surgeon cuts the epithelium with with a fine blade, and uses alcohol to loosen and lift it in a single layer. The laser beam is then directed at tissue under the epithelium. When the laser procedure is finished, the epithelium is put back in place. This procedure is best suited to vision problems requiring minor correction.
Epi-Lasik
This is basically a modified LASEK whereby the outer layer of the cornea is removed with mechanical device using a blunt rather than a sharp
Upper Eyelid Surgery - In upper eyelid surgery, incisions are made in the skin on the upper eyelid to remove excess skin/fat. The skin is then sutured and a new eyelid crease is created.
In transplantation surgery, the hair follicles are extracted from one part of the body and fixed to the bald regions. Hair follicles after extraction are examined under a stereoscopic dissecting microscope. These are then dissected into tiny grafts. Then, the grafts are implanted on the bald areas.
My interest into becoming an optometrist had begun when I was in high school; it happened in an unconventional way. It was not through watching videos, or someone explaining to me what optometry was, but rather, seeing the power of it firsthand. There was a point in my life where I felt emotions that I was unable to comprehend at the time. Seeing a family member on an operating table was the most petrifying moment that I have gone through, especially when the person on the table was my father. My father had to get a chalazion removed from his right eyelid. The doctor told my family that my father would be susceptible to certain health risks because of his diabetes and the severity of his cyst. This procedure was the hardest thing I have had to deal with in my life because it made me feel helpless. Usually, when my dad needs help he always asks me, but this time I could not do anything. It is interesting to think that something so small had such a big affect on my life.
Usually, a local anesthetic is injected into the pelvic area. Then, the doctor makes an incision on each side of the scrotum to reach each vas deferens the tubes that carry sperm. Sometimes a single incision is made in the center. Each tube is blocked. In most procedures, a small section of each tube is removed. Tubes may be tied off or blocked with surgica...
“Individuals are encouraged, even expected to make ‘lifestyle’ choices to maximize their life chance and simultaneously held responsible for managing and minimizing the risk associated with these decisions” (Leve, 2012:124). Media discourse is part of everyone’s day to day life, ideals of bodies are shown in all these media communication’s in order to appeal to the consumer. This could be considered to have made society become obsessed by looks, meaning that individuals feel the pressures to keep up with how people are represented in the media, for example recognized celebrities in magazines. According to The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, or BAAPS, there was a 16.5 percent increase of procedures in 2012. These statistics show that cosmetic surgery is becoming normalized, “This is how we live now. Anything that makes us feel better about our appearance, whether it involves needles, knives or acid, is acceptable’ (Wiseman, 2012)
A laser may be the only treatment needed if only one area has been detached and it is small. Surgery. This may be done if the area that has been detached is large. During the surgery, fluid will be drained and a freezing probe will be used to create scar tissue. The scar tissue will help the retina adhere to its underlying tissues once it flattens out.
The laser procedure is much faster than the surgical operations. Moreover, regular visits are also not required to derive benefit of the treatment.
Erbium or YAG laser which is of precise wave length penetrates into the skin. As the scattering of the YAG lasers are less, the normal skin is left unaffected.
In this treatment, two types of laser beams are utilized. First is an erbium YAG laser and the other is a carbon dioxide laser. YAG laser was used earlier which is now replaced by the modern type carbon dioxide laser.
LASIK eye surgery, also called, laser-assisted in-situ kerkatolmileusis, is a procedure which corrects vision problems and eliminates the need for glasses or contact lenses. It’s a type of eye surgery that changes the shape of the cornea using a laser. With LASIK eye surgery, the main goal is to “bend light rays to focus more precisely on the patient’s retina” and to produce clearer and sharper vision.
The creation of the first wearable pair of eyeglasses is credited to Salvino D'Armate in Italy around the year 1284 (Bellis). Despite numerous improvements made to this original model, the eyeglasses remained an elementary piece of technology that provided the sole form of vision correction at that time. This was the case century after century. Leonardo da Vinci left us with the first sketches and descriptions of contact lenses in 1508 (CLC). The credit for developing the first corneal contact lens is given to Dr. Thomas Young in 1801. He created a one quarter inch long glass tube filled with water which had a microscope lens fitted on the end (Hartstein). It wasn’t until the late 19th century, however, that the first crude, but tolerable pair of contact lenses were introduced (CLC). Since this first medieval pair, the contact lens has been improved upon time after time. From the introduction of using plastics in contact lens production to the soft, gas permeable, daily wear, disposable lens...
“A dispensing optician’s role entails, advising on, fits, supplying, and recommending the most appropriate spectacles after taking into account a patient’s visual, lifestyle and vocational needs”. (https://www.optical.org/en/Education/Careers/Pre-registration_home.cfm)
Beauty is a huge thing in the world today. Looks are the first thing someone notices about you and it is what they judge you on. It is just how our society is today. People are choosing to have plastic surgery due to the influence of celebrities, selfies, bullying, how important beauty is in society and the health benefits of it as well.
This protects the eye from becoming dry.The Cornea, a part of the sclera, is the transparent window of the eye through which light passes. The focusing of the light begins in the cornea.Behind the Cornea is a watery fluid called the aqueous humor. This fluid fills a curved, crescent shaped space, thick in the center and thinner toward the edges. The cornea and the aqueous humor together make an outer lens that refracts, or bends, light and dire...
