“James Mercer Langston Hughes, known as Langston Hughes was born February 2, 1902 in Missouri, to Carrie Hughes and James Hughes.” Years later his parents separated. Langston’s father moved to Mexico and became very successful, as his for mother, she moved frequently to find better jobs. As a child growing up Langston spent most of his childhood living with his grandmother named Mary Langston in Lawrence, Kansas. Mary Langston was a learned women and a participant in the civil rights Movement. When Langston Hughes was 12 years old his grandmother passed away. Langston then moved in with his mother and stepfather Homer Clark. A few months later, Langston’s mother sent him to live with her mother’s friend “Auntie” and Mr. Reed. In 1915 Langston rejoined his mother, stepfather, and stepbrother in Illinois. In 1916 the family moved again to Cleveland, Ohio.
“After Langston graduated from high school.” “He traveled to Mexico to visit his father.” “On his way to Mexico he wrote his first poem called “The Negro Speaks of a River”. “In 1921 the poem was published in the African American Periodical Crisis”. “In the same year his first play was published called the “Gold piece”.
In 1921, with the financial support of his father,” Langston entered Columbia University in New York.” “He soon became very unhappy with the university.” “Langston then wrote the poem “Negro” while staying in Harlem.” “Due to Langston’s unhappiness with the university he decided to with draw from the school.” “Langston took time off from college and visited Paris, west Africa, and Italy, gaining cultural knowledge and inspiration for his future works.” “Langston returned to the United States. In the poem “Pennsylvania Station” there was two unfamiliar words. Basilica is a roman public building. Bulwark is something that provides protection. The poem had rhyme scheme, and alliteration. The poem also had figurative language which consisted of simile, and metaphor. Other poetic was repetition. In the poem, the theme was about a person searching for a new soul and a new self.
Over the years Langston Hughes has become a very famous person because of his plays, short stories, novels, prose, and poems. In conclusion Langston has lived an adventurous life from his birth to his death. He has traveled parts of the world and has met many different people.
