Lana Del Rey Is Lana Del Rey one of the most depressing female artists to come along in the last ten years? Why? Yes, because that’s her style. Her songs seem to be depressing, but it's a reflection of who she is as an artist as well as the experiences she had early on in life. Her lyrics are heartfelt and poetic in the modern way, and her vocals are not necessarily for mainstream music; she has a whole style of her own that's different from pop stars of this age. My topic will revolve around a discussion of the music of Lana Del Rey. Using various YouTube clips, Del Rey pieced together the videos for her first two singles, Video Games and Blue Jeans all by herself. The videos, which uses vintage-looking clips mixed in with footage of herself, have accumulated millions of hits and copyright specialists have since been hired to legally clear them (National Post). I checked out her videos on YouTube. What struck me as strange was how she's managed to make so many people feel nostalgic for a time they haven't even experienced first hand. I was completely taken in too. It's all captivating - the slightly blurred, sepia tinted depictions of kids skateboarding, teens at prom night, and other shots of vaguely peaceful, transcendental settings like fields, streams, and rivers, all of which seem nice and airy fairy. Her music suits this imagery. When someone first listens to one of Lana’s “trippy" hit songs, they may be surprised to hear a style that seems simultaneously familiar and unique. “The only way to describe what listening to a Lana Del Rey song feels like is: from the moment you press “play” you feel as if someone has tucked you into bed, covering you up with a light, soft blanket of despair. But, the despair is not uncomfortable or unbearable; it is almost soothing, leaving you feeling wrapped into a calm sadness” (Cocca). To her credit, she tightened up her craft and then burrowed further into character to spite her critics, razzing them with songs like "Fucked My Way to the Top" and firing off bazookas in the "High By the Beach" video (Jenkins). She has also attracted controversy for seeming to promote young death as an ideal, especially in the music industry. Her song "Born to Die" is especially reminiscent of this theme, and the music video has been fitted to that idea (Mathews).
