Lakota Woman The book “Lakota Woman,” is an autobiography that depicts Mary Crow Dog and Indians’ Lives. Because I only had a limited knowledge on Indians, the book was full of surprising incidents. Moreover, she starts out her story by describing how her Indian friends died in miserable and unjustifiable ways. After reading first few pages, I was able to tell that Indians were mistreated in the same manners as African-Americans by whites. The only facts that make it look worse are, Indians got their land stolen and prejudice and inequality for them still exists. Some of the stories are about respect, honor, love, sacrifice, truth, bravery. Joseph M. Marshall III wrote this story so that young adults around the world and mainly the Lakota people know their culture, so they knew all the stories about the people long ago. What the author is writing about is all information that today’s generation will never know about the stories because most of the elder that even knew or know the stories have passed away or the young people just are not interested in listening to them anymore.

Although Native Americans encountered numerous challenges throughout the mid twentieth century, they were not the only ethnic group which was discriminated against; African Americans and other minority groups also had to endure similar calamities. In Bad Indians, Miranda uses different literary devices to show her perspective of the way Indigenous People were treated, the issues that arose from missionization, as well as the violence that followed through such issues. In Love Medicine, a twentieth century novel about two families who reside on the Indian reservation, Louise Erdrich tells the story of Marie Lazarre and Lulu Lamartine, two female characters quite different in nature, who are connected by their love and lust for Nector Kashpaw, head of the Chippewa tribe. Marie is a member of a family shunned by the residents of the reservation, and copes with the problems that arise as a result of a “childhood, / the antithesis of a Norman Rockwell-style Anglo-American idyll”(Susan Castillo), prompting her to search for stability and adopt a life of piety. Marie marries Nector Kashpaw, a one-time love interest of Lulu Lamartine, who relies on her sexual prowess to persevere, resulting in many liaisons with tribal council members that lead to the birth of her sons. Although each female character possibly hates and resents the other, Erdrich avoids the inevitable storyline by focusing on the different attributes of these characters, who unite and form a force that evidences the significance of survival, and the power of the feminine bond in Native Americ...
Lakota Woman Essay In Lakota Woman, Mary Crow Dog argues that in the 1970’s, the American Indian Movement used protests and militancy to improve their visibility in mainstream Anglo American society in an effort to secure sovereignty for all "full blood" American Indians in spite of generational gender, power, and financial conflicts on the reservations. When reading this book, one can see that this is indeed the case. The struggles these people underwent in their daily lives on the reservation eventually became too much, and the American Indian Movement was born. AIM, as we will see through several examples, made their case known to the people of the United States, and militancy ultimately became necessary in order to do so.
The Lakota are a Native American tribe also known to other tribes as the Sioux. They are part of a brand of seven tribes that speak three different dialects the other two being Dakota and Nakota. Historians are not sure were the Sioux languages speakers originated from, but they think that this tribe started out in the lower Mississippi River then later on migrated to the Ohio River. The history regarding the treatment and abuse of the Cherokee people during the 19th century is a well researched topic of discussion. The Trail of Tears is known as the forced movement of the Cherokee people out of their homeland into what is present day Oklahoma. It was named The Trail of Tears due to the disastrous effect it had on the Cherokee people and many died of starvation along the journey. Throughout American history there are patterns of injustice, inequality, and cruelty. This thread began when the Europeans discovered their new world was already inhabited by others, the “Native Americans”. Although they both tried to live in peace with each other, the Europeans thirst for power and domination of the new land led to the unjust, and cruel removal of the “native” people from their home. This idea originated under the rule of President Jefferson, and his removal policy, which he believed was the, “only was to ensure the survival of the Indian culture” (Intro. p 28). Throughout North American expansion the Lakota people have suffered some of the worst and straight forward persecutions against Native American Indians, and live in some of the poorest if not the poorest conditions in the United States. This is sad for a people who use to be one of the strongest nations in the Central Plains, feared by white men and other Indian nations alike for their ferocity and warrior abilities in the heat of battle. The Lakota arrived at positions of dominance because of their success in controlling live¬stock, land, trading rights, and people. Wars for conquest were motivated principally by these practical considerations, not driven by aggressive instincts. Their success in this respect rested on significant socioeconomic transformations in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the Lakota adapted their traditional way of life to an equestrian buffalo-hunting economy which followed the herds around the plains and expanded their territory. Because of this the Lakota experi¬enced political and social decentralization during their movement onto the prairies in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Some political consolida¬tion occurred during the nineteenth century, but only after they had achieved dominance in the northern central plains.
In the early 1900s tens of thousands of Native Americans were sent off to boarding schools and striped of their culture as a solution to what white men viewed as an Indian problem. It is hard to understand what these children and their families went through without actually being there. One author, Linda LeGarde Grover, helps the world see a new perspective on the times in her story, Maggie and Louis, 1914. The story is about two young Native Americans and their completely different experiences at the boarding school Herron that they were sent to. She demonstrates how white men forced their language, traditions, and their appearance on children in the boarding school. Maggie and Louis, 1914 is a story shaped by many cultural forces.
It can be argued that in the extensive brochure of American historical figures, no character has been interpreted and misinterpreted more often than the American Indian. Though the historians that narrate the earliest history of Native Americans are anglo-saxon scholars that highlight the celebration of nineteenth century “civilization” and the period of conquest, this Anglo-centric perspective of early nationalism and superiority was reshaped by historians of the latter 20th century. These more recent scholars complicate the notion of glorified colonialism, and introduce a sympathetic school of thought that regards the Indian American as a victim of early conquest. The civil rights movement shed a light on the often difficult challenges
