Have you ever forgotten anything at home when you went on vacation? Kelsey sure has! Every year in mid fall when the leaves start turning colors and you start to feel the crisp, and frigid wind blow on your face, Kelsey and her family go on a big trip to Wisconsin to go to Lake Puckaway to get away from their life in Illinois. As they started to get out of the car they could see their own warm breath hit the cold air and make an intense fog, when Kelsey’s mother told Wes and Kelsey to put on their shoes and all of a sudden she realized she had no shoes! She was in such a rush to get going she didn't even notice she put no shoes on as she ran out of the house. She looked over at her little brother and noticed he had no shoes either! Immediately the whole car was filled with emotion. Kelsey felt a mix of panic, embarrassment, and nervousness, Kelsey’s mother on the other hand, also felt panic, but also was full of anger and annoyance at her children's lack of shoes for their trip to chilly Wisconsin in the middle of fall! They had not packed any shoes because they were planning on wearing a pair up there and using those for the whole trip, but they were in such a rush that they had completely forgot to put them on at all. Nature has a powerful way of portraying good vs. bad, which parallels to the same concept intertwined with human nature. In the story “Greasy Lake” by T. Coraghessan Boyle, the author portrays this through the use of a lake by demonstrating its significance and relationship to the characters. At one time, the Greasy Lake was something of beauty and cleanliness, but then came to be the exact opposite. Through his writing, Boyle demonstrates how the setting can be a direct reflection of the characters and the experiences they encounter.
“Greasy Lake" by Tom Coraghessan Boyle, is the story of a group of adolescents, searching for the one situation that will proclaim them as bad boys and how their minds change. As the story begins, the narrator gives the impression that he feels he and the others boys should have taken notice of some obvious clues about themselves. These clues would have led them to the conclusion that they were far from the bad guys they wished to be. However, the oblivious teenagers ignore these obvious signs and continue in search of their goal.
Pickle Lake, Ontario is located in the Canadian Shield landform region. This landform region is the largest region in all of Canada and was formed over 4 billion years ago. After hearing of her diagnosis, the narrator travels from his residence in “California to New York” where his mother lives (3). Staring out of his airplane window, he noticed a change in the scenery. The “mountains giving away to flatlands” is used to not only describe the scenery, but how his life is changing (3). He will no longer be living a lavish life in California, but a depressing one that would “bring tears to his eyes” (22-23). He got a “sense of slippage” at the thought of losing his mother (3). When he finally arrived to his parent’s residence, the narrator was greeted with “brittleness and frost” (4). The author uses these two words with a cold denotation to describe more than just the weather on Long Island (4). Brittleness and frost are utilized to display the narrator’s feeling, as well as the theme of the book. The weather wasn’t the only thing the narrator noticed when he entered his parent’s town. His mother's actions caught his attention as well. When she held his hand, he again felt a sense of slippage (9). It mirrored the sensation he experienced on the airplane. The “better story” is not always the one that is easy to believe. Sure, all the hypotheses are possible, but there is quite a fine line between the better story, and an absurd story. We only know so much about our characters in the story of In the Lake of the Woods. As for what is the truth, what really happened, well that’s up to the reader.

Running around in the yard on a warm summer evening. No shoes are needed for this activity, they thought. My mother sitting next to her grandfather, swinging her bare feet from the old wooden bench out back. Her fondest memory was unfolding in front of her eyes. Uncle Scott and Cousin Kevin were running around yelling “throw it to me, to me.” My mother’s grandfather was throwing the baseball back and forth with the boys as my mother watched. “I loved watching the boys push and shove each other to be the one to catch the ball.” my mother said. As I walked I let my eyes close and my feet feel the groove in the gravel. My mind, still asleep, dreamt of breathing. The lining of my father's old coat escaped inside the pockets and caught my fingers, which were numb from the cold. I would have worn gloves but the sun would be unbearable later in the day. The clouds would rise over the mountains and disappear and the birds would slowly become silent as the heat settled in. But for now it was just cold.
