The theme of love is widely and deeply explored both in Chekhov’s ‘a lady with a dog’ and in Lawrence’s ‘The horse dealer’s daughter’. In both stories the protagonists undergo a journey of self discovery to find love. In both stories its’ fascinating to see the characters develop as they undergo a transformation finding purpose and falling in love, while at the same time they try to disconnect from their intolerable and dull pasts. Love comes in many shades and viewed from totally different perspectives and that what makes the stories so interesting and creates suspense which draws the reader right in. This paper will discuss how the main characters lived prior to finding love and how their lives were later changed.

The turning point occurs when Dmitry realizes that he is restless and cannot live without seeing Anna again, so he decides to travel to her home town against all odds and try to win her heart. At first Dmitry is confused and does not know for certain if he has fallen for Anna as he never loved anyone before. After meeting her they establish that she would come to visit him in Moscow occasionally and Dmitry adjusts to a sort of a new life, a secret life that is valuable to him while his public life is worthless and means little. Dmitry learns so see things through Anna’s eyes and that really enhances their connection. Does their love bring them satisfaction? ,who knows, but they are so into each other that it no longer matters as they greatly suffer while being apart. One of the morals would be that we don’t choose who we love. The story is open ended as the readers can decide for themselves the fate of the two lovers. H. Lawrence, are set on a journey to find love and happiness in places they never expected, this resembles Chekhov’s story. Their lives are dull and meaningless until they find love in the strangest of ways. Mabel feels that her life is empty after her mother dies and that nothing could fill that void. All she had left was her house and possessions and when it was taken away Mabel slowly becomes more depressed to the point when she looses her identity and turns suicidal, she decides to end her life by drowning in the pond. As there was nothing between Jack and Mabel up until then they were just strangers to each other. Jack viewed Mable as a patient in despair when he rescued her only later to realize his feelings for her. His life was also dull before that day and nothing of meaning has happened to him, he was a workaholic who had no joy in his life. Lawrence’s “The Horse Dealer’s Daughter” was originally called “The Miracle,” marking the protagonist’s rebirth of love out of death. Mabel, the twenty-seven year old spinster, is revived physically and spiritually after her submergence in the “dead cold pond” (2337). For a decade, Mabel played housekeeper for her “ineffectual brothers” and although she was not happy, the “sense of money…kept her proud, confident”(2334). After the death of Mabel’s father, the family’s horse-dealing business collapses and Mabel becomes “mindless and persistent, [enduring] from day to day” (2335). Distant from her brothers and receiving no visitors other than dealers and “coarse men” (2334), Mabel concludes that her life is like a barren field. Even though Mabel reassures herself that she “would always hold the keys of her own situation” (2335), she has already died a spiritual death – a death that is mirrored by the imageries of the desolate house and the “sloping, dank, winter-dark fields” (2334). Many stories talk about relationships, especially the ones between man and woman as couple. In some of them, generally the most popular ones, these relationships are presented in a rosy, sentimental and cliché way. In others, they are presented using a much deeper, realistic and complicated tone; much more of how they are in real life. But not matter in what style the author presents its work, the base of every love story is the role each member of that relationship assumes in it. A role, that sometimes, internal forces will determinate them, such as: ideas, beliefs, interests, etc. or in order cases external, such as society. In the story “The Storm” by American writer Kate Chopin and the play A Doll’s house by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen I am going to examine those roles, giving a special focus to the woman´s, because in both works, it is non-traditional, different and somewhat shocking, besides having a feminist point of view.

Throughout the history of literature, love has always played a large role in plot because it is a feeling that is universally shared by all humans and has been throughout human history. Spanish culture specifically, tends to be a culture more associated with romance and love than others. It is no surprise that because of this high importance placed on love and romance in Spanish culture that many Spanish authors and playwrights incorporate some form of love into all of their works. Lope De Vega was no exception and was one of the most famous playwrights of his time during the Spanish Golden Age. Something that makes Lope’s plays, specifically some of his unpublished ones such as Fuenteovejuna and Punishment Without Revenge so interesting is not the presence of perfect, harmonious love but rather of corrupt and distorted love within the characters’ relationships in his plays. By writing plays involving imperfect love, Lope comments on the culture around love and marriage of his time and even criticizes it, something Spanish audiences during this time were not ready to handle, which is the reason why some of these plays were never published until recently.
The Lais of Marie de France is a compilation of short stories that delineate situations where love is just. Love is presented as a complex emotion and is portrayed as positive, while at other times, it is portrayed as negative. The author varies on whether or not love is favorable as is expressed by the outcomes of the characters in the story, such as lovers dying or being banished from the city. To demonstrate, the author weaves stories that exhibit binaries of love. Two distinct types of love are described: selfish and selfless. Love is selfish when a person leaves their current partner for another due to covetous reasons. Contrarily, selfless love occurs when a lover leaves to be in a superior relationship. The stark contrast between the types of love can be analyzed to derive a universal truth about love.
Many authors are recognized by a reoccurring theme found throughout their works. The author D.H. Lawrence can be classified into this group. He is well known for his reoccurring theme that romantic love is psychologically redeeming. He wrote “The Horse Dealer’s Daughter” , a short story that exemplifies this theme quite accurately, in 1922 (Sagar 12). Through excellent use of symbolism in “The Horse Dealer’s Daughter”, Lawrence renders his theme of romantic love being psychologically redeeming through the emotional development of the two main characters, Mabel and Dr. Fergusson.
It seems as though Pyotr and Alexeich both represent different aspects of Chekhov’s father, and Chekhov himself is Anna. Chekov’s father was aloof from his family and came from a lower class background; like Modest Alexeich, Chekhov’s father also fawned at the feet of his social superiors. Chekhov, in contrast, was an unconventional boy. He eventually broke from his family’s lower class position and became a doctor; however, throughout his school and career he performed additional odd jobs to earn money he could send to his father. Also like Anna, Chekhov loved to be with people (Payne xiii, xvii-xxi). Comparing the two, then, it would seem as if Chekhov identifies with Anna as she struggles to find her social identity and wrestles with her desires and the needs of those she loves. This tone gives the story a melancholy mood and leads to a bittersweet conclusion. The ending seems happy for Anna, yet the reader is left to wonder what the ending represents. Did her father and husband receive the dues for their behavior? Are Anna’s actions a normal product of the transformation from youth to adulthood, or did she come to completely discard respect and
Chekhov reminds the readers that Anna is young compared to Gurov. Chekhov’s novel states, “As he went to bed he reminded himself that only a short time ago she had been a schoolgirl, like his own daughter” (3). The images of Anna being a schoolgirl not too long ago, when Gurov has a daughter of similar age, brings the sense of abnormality between the relationship of Gurov and Anna. It’s hard to imagine such a huge difference in lovers especially in the strict culture of Russia in the late 19th century where these occasions were unthought-of. The uncomforting thought of the difference in age goes back to differ the meanings of love and romance in the novel because against all odds and differences, Anna and Gurov hide away from these obvious facts. The thought of love in this culture is between a man and woman of similar age. According to Chekhov’s novel, “He was sick of his children, sick of the bank, felt not the slightest desire to go anywhere or talk about anything” (9). Chekhov’s description of sickness reveals that Gurov has a huge moment of denial, denial of family and denial of age. This denial of age, helps Gurov cope with the oddities of their relationship, the oddities of the love they had with the characteristics of a romance. Anton Chekhov and Ernest Hemingway both convey their ideas of love in their respective stories The Lady with the Pet Dog and Hills like White Elephants in different ways. However, their ideas are quite varying, and may be interpreted differently by each individual reader. In their own, unique way, both Chekhov and Hemingway evince what is; and what is not love. Upon proper contemplation, one may observe that Hemingway, although not stating explicitly what love is; the genius found in his story is that he gives a very robust example of what may be mistaken as love, although not being true love. On the other hand, Chekhov exposes love as a frame of mind that may only be achieved upon making the acquaintance of the “right person,” and not as an ideal that one may palpate at one instance, and at the another instance one may cease to feel; upon simple and conscious command of the brain. I agree with Hemingway’s view on love because it goes straight to the point of revealing some misconceptions of love.
Perhaps Tolstoy's short story, “The Kreutzer Sonata”, truly captures one definite conception of love, albeit a very negative one. To understand more what is brought to light in this story, we need to take a look at it, more importantly at the character of Pozdnychev.
With all the recent events that have occurred in Mabel’s life she truly believes that this is the end for herself; “mindless and persistent, she seemed in a sort of ecstasy to be coming nearer to her fulfillment, her own glorification, approaching her dead mother, who was glorified” (Lawrence 705). Mabel walks down to the cemetery where her mother lays at rest because Mabel is feeling alone and wants that sense of security. Mabel’s depression causes her to believe that “the life she follow[s] here in the world was far less real than the world of death she inherited from her mother” (Lawrence 706). All of these dark thoughts and memories of a life with her mother running through Mabel’s head lead to her finally giving up on her life and walking into a dreary pond to try to drown herself and end her
The story told in “Beloved” contains a process of memorialization and change. In this process, the relationship between women is very important. Some relations are dominated by violence and hate, others are full of confidence and love. In those relationships rememory and storytelling are important factors, because the women get to know each other better by telling stories about the past. They get to know much more about each other, through which their relationship dóes change.
Before she knew it, Anna quickly got overtaken by this passion, and it ultimately led to her own demise, as the love that Vronsky had to offer quickly diminished. This became a problematic force since Anna practically gave up everything she owned to chase the life that this man offered her. She did it in such a manner that she could no longer return back to her family or normal lifestyle. In a way, she was victim to a lifeless marriage by which she found herself to pretend to be happy. Anton Chekov’s play, The Seagull, uses the literary elements of symbolism, foreshadowing and motifs to convey the theme of the complexities of love. This theme allows the reader to understand different versions of love such as expressive love and unrequited love so the reader can relate more to the play. “The deviations from traditional techniques are not merely novel stage gimmicks, however, but reflect Chekhov’s basic dramatic and thematic purposes. He was not interested in theatrical action or excitement as such, but in the effects such incidents have on his people. The story “The Darling” by Anton Chekhov, illustrates a woman that is lonely, insecure, and lacking wholeness of oneself without a man in her life. This woman, Olenka, nicknamed “Darling” is compassionate, gentle and sentimental. Olenka is portrayed for being conventional, a woman who is reliant, diligent, and idea less. Although, this story portrays that this woman, known as the Darling needs some sort of male to be emotionally dependant upon, it is as if she is a black widow, she is able to win affection, but without respect. Only able to find happiness through the refection of the beliefs of her lovers, she never evolves within the story.
