The Bard of Avon is a title that was attributed to the world-renowned poet, William Shakespeare, due to the vast array of theatrical works and plays he has written. However, there is a trail of controversy that follows the path of William Shakespeare. Many historians proclaim that William Shakespeare worked as a front-man for an upperclass member of the royal court who desired to keep his identity undisclosed. One famous play that William Shakespeare has been given credit for, Macbeth, also has a trail of controversy surrounding the character of Lady Macbeth. Some readers argue that Lady Macbeth lacks a sense of morality, while other readers argue that Lady Macbeth’s moral system is displayed in several scenes throughout the play. Lady Macbeth expresses her guilt through actions she performs while sleepwalking. An attendant to Lady Macbeth observes Lady Macbeth “to seem thus washing her hands” (V.1.27-28) continuously for half an hour. In the scene where Duncan is killed Lady Macbeth states “A little water clears us of this deed” (II.2.88). Suggest the blood is the guilt, at first Lady Macbeth expected to be able to wash off the guilt and not feel it after the deed was done. However, the scene where the attendant observes Lady Macbeth not being able to rid herself of the blood acts as a symbol for the fact that Lady Macbeth is unable to let go of the guilt that entails her actions. Guilt is an emotion that an individual may experience after they realize their choices or actions have attributed pain towards another individual. In other words, guilt can be described as a moral emotion because the individual feels as if they might have committed an action that what unjust.
