Justin Kurzel’s interpretation of Shakespeare’s tragic and bloody Macbeth did not live up to the play. The play is a famous tale with a surprisingly linear plot. Macbeth’s victory on the battlefield was foretold by three witches, who then predicted that he is destined to be king. Succumbing to his wife's manipulation, Macbeth murders the current king, and takes the throne for himself. He then sets out on a murdering rampage, eliminating anyone who has their eye on his throne. Michael Fassbender plays Macbeth in this adaptation and Lady Macbeth is played by Marion Cotillard - two very fine actors, but together, they created quite an unimpressive pair, not living up to the classical play.

At the beginning of the film, there is a wide shot of a funeral for Macbeth’s dead child, which could have been a possible motivator where he searches for some way to deal with his loss and maybe sought out after the crown. The addition of the child witch is pointless as it does not add to the storyline in my opinion and creates more confusion. The director changes left many holes within the film, when Fleance was escaping the assassin, one of the child witches appears in the middle of the forest, and then Fleance disappeared, making a later reappearance. This left me confused as it did not happen in the play, and I felt the director left a major hole in his new take on the tale. The use of background score to set the mood was also very good. The use of very mysterious and eerie film score conveys a sense of foreboding. The use of music during the first battle created a very powerful tone, with slow to fast background score to contrast the slow to fast motion of the battle. During the hesitation of Macbeth the instrumental score was able to show the inner struggle Macbeth was going through, creating a build up to the death of king Duncan. The theme of death was set from the very start with the connection of score, and the dark tone resonated through the entire movie.
