In Macbeth the fundamental theme is Ambition, not only because it is driving the force of Macbeth’s life but also because it is the theme which gives away the Shakespearean idea of tragedy in this play. It is ambition that causes Macbeth’s fall from grace and his inevitable death. “I have no spur… but only / Vaulting ambition which o’erleaps itself”, This admittance comes after he has considered all the right reasons for not killing King Duncan and ambition overrules all the right reasons and his conscious.
Macbeth is a fearless warrior and an important lord who defends his King against treachery but his fatal flaw is ambition which he allows to be set into motion in his mind first by the witches’ prophecy and then the amount of ambition for him from his wife soon undermines his righteousness. Lady Macbeth is not the equal of Macbeth in the way that Cleopatra is of Anthony in Shakespeare’s Anthony and Cleopatra. Her role is important but she is just a tool to the work of the witches. Macbeth is tempted to do evil and Lady Macbeth is the key person, the one person that Macbeth trusts and loves, who makes sure that his aim is thorough and complete. This does not make her his partner in crime but rather just what he needs in order to succeed and be King. After the murder of the King Lady Macbeth wants to support her husband, but she has no further role to play in his life except to interpret the image of queen. Because of this she is left on the sidelines and breaks down eventually going crazy.

When Macbeth was off at war, and told lady Macbeth that the witches greeted him as Thane of Cawdor, and King of Scotland before he received those titles, she was probably scheming no how to fulfill those before he returned home. Once home, they had King Duncan stay at Dunsinane. Lady Macbeth then b-tches at her husband and ridicules his masculinity in order to make him commit murder (Friedlander). Macbeth reluctantly murders Duncan, even though he wanted to wait and have it all play out without killing anyone. When he went to the well to wash off his hands he speaks of his remorse, and lady Macbeth finds out that he did not implicate the guards, so she tells him to go do it. But he wont, so she insults him more, and goes to do it herself.
As Macbeth becomes less dependent on his wife, she loses more control. She loses control of her husband, but mostly, of herself, proving her vacillating truth. Lady Macbeth’s character gradually disintegrates through a false portrayal of unyielding strength, an unsteady control of her husband and shifting involvement with supernatural powers.Throughout the duration of play Lady Macbeth’s truly decrepit and vulnerable nature is revealed. Lady Macbeth has been the iron fist and authority icon for Macbeth, yet deep down, she never carried such traits to begin with. This duality in Lady Macbeth’s character plays a huge role in planting the seed for Macbeth’s downfall and eventual demise.

On the beginning of the novel, Macbeth receives the news that if Duncan, the current king, passed away he would be the next one to the throne. So, Lady Macbeth induces Macbeth into killing Duncan by filling his mind with ambition and planting cruel seeds into his head. After accomplishing his deed of killing the king, he brings out the daggers that were used during the murder, and says, “I’ll go no more.
