In the play, Macbeth, Shakespeare uses conflicts to develop the idea that every person has the will to change their fate if they don’t want it. Lady Macbeth is a female, but she’s against that, she wants to change it or become more like a male. Lady Macbeth knows about the prophecies from her husband that he would be the king and she also finds out that the king is going to their house, so she decides to become masculine and make the prophecy come true. Then, she started to talk to the imaginary spirits to “unsex” (1.5.48) her so she will be a male or have male characteristics to fulfill her desire for the prophecy to become real. The conflict she has between herself is causing her to don’t like herself. Lady Macbeth also wants to change her
“milk for gall” (1.5.55), and it’s also for her to become more masculine. Woman normally has milk to feed their baby and that’s very feminine. However, she wants to make the milk bitter so she won’t be feminine and the people around her won’t treat her as a woman. She wants the people around her to treat her as a man and not as a woman so she would act more like a man. This conflict she has with the society demonstrates that she wants to go against the fate that she is born as a woman. The conflicts Lady Macbeth has between herself and the society shows that people do anything to get what they want and they would even change their fate for that want.
Prior to deciding whether or not conflict is central to the dramatic development of MACBETH, one must consider all the dramatic factors that contribute to the Shakespearean play. The gradual decline of the protagonist , the role portrayed by characters and the order in which the events occur, greatly influence the direction in which the development of the play takes place. After reading the text MACBETH, by Shakespeare and viewing the film version, directed by Roman Polanski, it is logical to see that ambition and the deceptive appearances of what really is, is central to the dramatic development of MACBETH.
Lady Macbeth has a glorified idea of what it means to be masculine, so she thinks that she could achieve more without her femininity. Consciously, she wishes to be, “top-full/of direst cruelty,” (I.v.48-50). Right after this, she tries to turn into a less feminine person on her own. Taking control, she manipulates Macbeth and calls him a coward, and really pushes the envelope on murdering Duncan. Lady Macbeth even tells Macbeth the plan and then says, “Leave all the rest to me,” (I. vi. 86). This is a clear gender role reversal and is the first time she tries to force herself into a non-feminine role. Lady Macbeth shows that she can take charge, but her business-like tone shows that she isn’t allowing her womanly side come out. In fact, while Lady Macbeth is ready to take charge, she has subconscious reservations. She is not able to kill Duncan herself, claiming that “Had he not resembled/My father as he slept, I had done’t,” (II.ii.16-17). While Macbeth isn’t questioning her ability, Lady Macbeth’s tone is defensive, showing that she is trying to convince herself of the same thing. Their relationship changes dramatically after the murder of King Duncan. They both change as individuals thus changing their relationship. Their destructive relationship influences the murders madness and deaths in the play. The two of them are so ambitious that together they push each other to achieve their goals no matter what.
We see how a vigorous Lady Macbeth; initially in association with the witches’ predictions, at-tempts to mirror their disturbance of gender in psychological terms by desiring to "unsex" herself in order to carry out such a powerful action [murder], otherwise, being impossible for a woman to carry out (no offence or sexism is intended when I state this).
At the beginning of the play “The Tragedy of Macbeth”, Macbeth illuminates a heroic character. Conversely, when the reader is introduced to Lady Macbeth one learns Macbeth may not be the heroic person he may seem. The way Lady Macbeth describes Macbeth it appears as if he is a coward and not as heroic as previously learned in the house. As the play proceeds, Macbeth is no longer a heroic character and Lady Macbeth is not as ruthlessness as she was at the start of the play. After receiving prophecies from the witches about his future to come, he is forced into an ambition-fuelled madness. As previously mentioned, Macbeth was persuaded to kill King Duncan by his wife due to his debatable manliness. This presented Macbeth’s need to prove to his wife he was manly by being valiant and strong and partaking in violent acts. He responds to his wife’s forceful directives by telling her, “Please stop! I dare do all that may become a man;/ Who dares do more is none” (1.7.46-47). This quote indicates how Macbeth believes a “real” man would not murder, and only due to Lady Macbeth explicitly attempting to manipulate him into action, does he succumb to do so. Macbeth endeavours the heinous crime of murdering the King, all owing to Lady Macbeth’s commands. On more than one occasion Macbeth is seen becoming mad, being overtaken by guilt and concern, highlighting that his manhood does not in fact give him any power, but only draws attention to his lack thereof. The inferiority he has within his relationship, also makes evident that Lady Macbeth’s pressure causes the transpiration of Macbeth’s powerful future. On the other hand, Lady Macbeth views on manhood are much different from her husband's and the other characters in the play. Unlike Macbeth, Lady Macbeth envisions a man to be opportunist, cruel and ruthless instead of honorable and loyal. When she receives the letter from Macbeth and learns of her chance to be queen, she prays that the spirits "that tend on mortal thoughts [would] unsex [her]", and that she will be "fill[ed] from the crown to the toe of direst cruelty", so that she would have the strength to murder Duncan. Believing the spirits would "unsex" her, she hopes that she wouldn't be bothered by a woman's kindness or remorse and thus would become a cruel killer, like a man.
Shakespeare is known for strong male heroes, but they are not laying around in this play, not that Macbeth is full of strong female heroines, either. The women in the play, Lady Macbeth and the witches have very uncommon gender belief, and act as inhumane as the men. While the men engage in direct violence, the women use manipulation to achieve their desires. As Lady Macbeth impels Macbeth to kill King Duncan, she indicated that she must take on some sort of masculine characteristic in order to process the murder. “Come, you spirits/ that tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, / and fill me from the crown to the toe top-full/ of direst cruelty.” (i v 31-34) This speech is made after she reads Macbeth’s letter. Lady Macbeth, one of the main characters in the play Macbeth, is an example of a character that throughout the course of the play has had a change of heart of some sorts. Lady Macbeth's conscience, which seems to have never appeared or mattered to her before, suddenly becomes an uncontrollable part of her psychological state of being. Murder, which she deemed as such a small inconsequential act, later causes her to lose sleep and finally to take her own life. In the beginning of the play, when Lady Macbeth is first introduced she is already plotting Duncan's murder. She even wishes that she were not a woman so that she could do it herself saying in Act I, Scene 5, "Come, you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here."
In Shakespeare's Macbeth, the focus that is placed on the character of Lady Macbeth helps to convey the play's theme of the strife created by the struggle for power and control that is present throughout the entire work. Shakespeare presents her character in great detail and shows her to be a dominating, authoritative woman who thrives on the power she holds over her husband. He then shows the principle character, Macbeth, rise up and join his wife in a struggle for power of his own. It is the actions that Macbeth takes in attempt to achieve ultimate authority that lead to his downfall, and it is Lady Macbeth's loss of control over her husband as he gains this independence which causes her own weakening and eventually leads to her demise as well.
