Kramer v. Kramer was an excellent film upon my viewing. I give the film four stars due to its detail in technical aspects, realistic portrayal of human drama, and outstanding performances. Definitely worth adulation, the technical aspects of Kramer v. Kramer remain refreshingly simple while still standing out as excellent. There are no flashy editing techniques used, though well-executed transitions between scenes help the viewer understand the passage of time and changing attitudes between characters. The score remains unobtrusive, though is successful in establishing the tone of the film and signifying character development. My favorite technical aspect of Kramer v. Kramer was definitely the cinematography, which established the setting of New York in ingenious ways. As Ted reels from his divorce, the New York cityscape renders him lost among the monstrous concrete jungle, marking the confusion and chaos experienced in his personal life. Kramer is in its performances, and the film would not be as excellent without the tremendous efforts of actors Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep. The methods of Hoffman and Streep’s performances took both paid off in their utter believability. Meryl Streep is utterly convincing as the lost and aimless Joanna Kramer, and her scenes in the courtroom were shockingly poignant in their realism. The blustering, hotheaded performance of Dustin Hoffman as Ted Kramer tremendously illustrates the inner turmoil and confusion resulting from his character’s new status as a single father, having to redefine his approach to daily life and his relationship with his son. Overall, each performance achieves a thorough and believable character arc with Ted and Joanna both irrevocably changed by their experiences in the film.
