Is self-confidence truly achievable? Most people have a hard time becoming being self-confident since the world is full of others hurtful opinions and thoughts. Two novels that use literary devices to convey the same thing, as well as show character development, are “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini and”I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings”(IKWTCBS) by Maya Angelou. Both novels also include similar topics such as rape, religion, and discrimination as well as test each character's self-confidence through traumatic events. In the novel, The Kite Runner” Amir is often doubtful of his abilities and is a bystander to the trials that his servant, Hassan, endures to protect him. One quote that shows Angelou's use of thoughts to convey messages is "I was really white and because a cruel fairy stepmother, who was understandably jealous of my beauty, had turned me into a too-big Negro girl, with nappy black hair, broad feet and a space between her teeth that would hold a number-two pencil. "(prologue pg.9)"By including that Maya is not confident about her looks Angelou gives way to some difficulties she may face as well as some insecurities.The same is done by Hosseini in the following quote"A boy who won’t stand up for himself becomes a man who can’t stand up to anything.-Said by Baba to Rahim Khan.” Amir overhears Baba and Rahim Khan speaking in Baba's study, hearing his own father talk about him as if he wasn't proud of him drove Amir to do anything to get the approval of his father. Maya, on the other hand, is always self-aware and attempts to find love and a place where she belongs and feels beautiful.The characters also go through traumatic events that cause their self-esteem to collapse almost completely, which makes the character question their
