“Tongue-Tied” by Maxine Hong Kingston narrates what her younger self experienced after having her frenulum cut by her mother and how she struggled to speak. As she grew up she felt proud that her mother was able to do such a strong act and other times terrified that the first thing her mother did when she was born was cut her tongue. After asking her mother why she would do such a thing she learned that her mother did it to help her speak any other language without difficulty. Instead of being an aide in helping her speak clearly it seemed to do nothing. When she started school she had difficulty speaking english and frequently did not speak at all. she felt she was able to speak. Although her voice wasn't as strong and instead was distorted and awkward she still spoke above her regular whisper. The way my mother decided to improve my pronunciation with languages was to have me reply to her in a different one each time she asked and enrolling me in different language classes in school. I speak three different languages fluently Somali, Oromo, and English. One of my parents speaks Somali and and the other speaks Oromo so I constantly have to switch between the two. I would frequently get tongue tied trying to use the right tone for each language and mixing up the words. When I was in middle school I took Arabic, French, and in my last year Spanish.
Each class I would go to I would have to switch the accent in which I spoke. It was difficult because Spanish and French were similar in spelling but one was spoken with smoother edges and room for error while the other was rigid and precise. For each class we had an exit ticket that consisted of us speaking a sentence in that language. When it came to my turn and I had to read a sentence to go over what we learned that day in French and that day i decided to discard my usual routine of speaking slowly in order to maintain a clear enunciation. I spoke quickly not paying attention to the pronunciation and assumed I did fine because I was so used to it. Turns out several of the words I spoke were pushed out with a spanish accent. For example the French and Spanish word for garden are both ‘jardin’ but pronounced completely different and I chose the smooth spanish pronunciation. As a result I was given an extra page of homework and not given points for my exit ticket which at that moment felt like the worst thing. It also gave me a push to improve my pronunciation with different languages not only did I not want to be in a position like that again I also liked being able to sound like a different person with each language I spoke. The more languages you speak the easier it gets to pronounce others but the consequence is mixing pronunciation up and potentially saying something you do not
mean.
The first article is “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan. The author tells a story of her relationship with her mother whose English is poor in comparison to that of most Americans. The author is well versed in English since she was schooled in the United States. (Tan 37) The author begins with an introduction to her mother’s style of language. She explains that it is her language that she and her mother share, and it is a “language of intimacy.” (36) Tan makes sure to point out that it is not difficult for her to understand what her mother says. After this introduction Tan begins to tell the reader about stories of how her mother’s limited English had affected her. She writes that she had been ashamed of her mother’s unintelligible English. Coping with two different sides of you can be challenging especially in American society. By being bilingual you always have a small character inside of you telling you what to do and how to react. As being an immigrant myself, I agree on the importance of public language. Human beings have a natural instinct to be happy in socially involved activities. To communicate with your peers and have a mutual understanding is a great blessing. However, that doesn’t mean you disregard the importance of your own mother tongue that made you who you are and gave you a unique identity. Using myself as an example, I speak a tribal language that is full of rich culture and identity, signifying the story and history of our people. My father prefers my siblings and I do not speak any English at home and only speak Pashto. I try to go by his sayings because I believe that by living in a western society and going to English speaking schools, I will gradually assimilate into their community and will be able to communicate without difficulty. Contrary, by not speaking Pashto at home and with family, I will not only lose my language, but my intimacy to my unique culture and heritage. So that was the case for Richard Rodriguez in “Aria”, he expands on his life as a kid learning to speak English. And his parents not knowing how to speak English fluently. He would not like going to school because when he would try to speak English he would get made fun of. English was never comfortable to him. But that all changed when the nuns from his school came to his house to tell his parents to speak more English at home. He felt broken, there was no talking in Spanish in the house just English. From there he started to learn more English at school and became fluent in it. He even forgot how to pronounce things in Spanish after that. Richard Rodriguez said, “I would speak, or try to speak, Spanish, and I would manage to utter halting, hiccupping sounds that betrayed my unease” (Richard 319). The Essay written by Amy Tan titled 'Mother Tongue' concludes with her saying, 'I knew I had succeeded where I counted when my mother finished my book and gave her understandable verdict' (39). The essay focuses on the prejudices of Amy and her mother. All her life, Amy's mother has been looked down upon due to the fact that she did not speak proper English. Amy defends her mother's 'Broken' English by the fact that she is Chinese and that the 'Simple' English spoken in her family 'Has become a language of intimacy, a different sort of English that relates to family talk' (36). Little did she know that she was actually speaking more than one type of English. Amy Tan was successful in providing resourceful information in every aspect. This gave the reader a full understanding of the disadvantages Amy and her mother had with reading and writing. The Essay 'Mother Tongue' truly represents Amy Tan's love and passion for her mother as well as her writing. Finally getting the respect of her critics and lucratively connecting with the reaction her mother had to her book, 'So easy to read' (39). Was writing a book the best way to bond with your own mother? Is it a struggle to always have the urge to fit in? Was it healthy for her to take care of family situations all her life because her mother is unable to speak clear English?
In the story “Mother Tongue,” by Amy Tan, Mrs. Tan talks about (in the book) her life and how she grew up with different Englishes was very hard and how it has affected her today. The setting of the book goes from being at lecture to the past of Amy Tan and her mother along with the different Englishes she had to come accustomed to. In “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan, the author’s attitude towards the “different Englishes” she grew up with is fascinated. Amy Tan conveys this attitude through wanting to learn all different kinds of Englishes, her use of Englishes in her novel, and the acceptance she developed of her mother’s broken English.
To best understand Maxine Hong Kingston’s article “Tongue-Tied, one must consider the very definition of the term “tongue-tied. The Oxford dictionary defines tongue-tied as “being speechless or confused in expression, as from shyness, embarrassment or astonishment.”(Dictionary.com) This definition explains the discomfort of the little girl’s feelings throughout this article. Maxine Hong Kingston lived in America, far away from her Chinese culture and traditions. In contrast, Wong’s upbringing involves her mother forcing her into attending two different schools. After her American school day, Wong continued on with Chinese school to learn about both cultures.
It was difficult for me because I didn’t always understand certain words or phrases in English that I knew in Spanish, and sometimes I felt left out. In the middle of the year, my family moved me to a school with a Bilingual Program. Again, I had a hard time because now I had to learn all of the letter names and sounds in Spanish that I had been learning in English.
Growing up in a bilingual household, I have struggled with many things especially reading and writing. Reading and writing have never been my strongest points. My parents did everything they knew to help my sister and I learn and respect our Mexican culture. Born into American culture but raised by Hispanic parents, often was difficult for me. Since I was little I had to manage and balance two very different cultures at the same time. There were many times while growing up that I encountered complex situations in regards to language, whether to speak Spanish or English and when it was appropriate. I felt a lot of pressure having to act as an interpreter for my parents when we were out in public. At home I was told to speak Spanish so I would not forget, but at school I was taught to only speak English with my teachers and friends. In Maxine Hong Kingston’s autobiographical piece “Silence”, she describes her inability to speak English when she was in grade school. Kindergarten was the birthplace of her silence because she was a Chinese girl attending an American school. She was very embarrassed of her inability, and when moments came up where she had to speak, “self-disgust” filled her day because of that squeaky voice she possessed (422). Kingston notes that she never talked to anyone at school for her first year of silence, except for one or two other Chinese kids in her class. Most of the time at school my lexicon is in English, I speak Spanish all the time at home.At times it is hard for me to switch my languages up because in Spanish we speak so quickly. My quick Spanish speaking always sticks to me and when speaking English I can slur a lot because of the speed in my voice. Adjusting the speed of my voice based on which language I am speaking is what I have been focusing on when communicating.
