Robyn Williams’ (presenter of the science show on ABC) interview with Greg Cook (Professor of Microbiology at University of Otago) provided insight into a more faster and cheaper alternative to the current TB treatments out there today. The team at the University is studying a cellular enzyme with targets the enzymes in Tuberculosis bacterium rather than the current treatments which affects normal cells in patients which makes the patients feel weak. This new treatment will revolutionise treatment in countries with financial difficulties and can help to reduce resistant strains of TB bacterium.

Time is a major limiting factor when it comes to providing effective treatment for TB. It will take around six months for a short-term treatment for TB, however if the TB strain is drug resistant this increases to anywhere between 12 – 24 months.
