The Africanized Honey Bee is actually a variety of honeybee derived by hybridization from African honeybees naturalized in the western hemisphere. Because they are highly defensive and will attack perceived intruders more readily than the common European honeybee, they are also known by the popular name of “killer bees.”
Brazilian scientists imported African honeybee queens in the 1950’s in order to breed a honeybee for use in tropical climates. Some swarms escaped into the wild. Because they were highly adapted for tropical survival and had no natural competitors, they thrived and spread rapidly through South America, extending their range by as much as 500 km (300 mi) per year. By the 1980s, Africanized honeybees had reached Central America and soon colonized Mexico. In 1990, the first swarm was found in the United States. The bees spread from Texas to New Mexico and Arizona and then into California by 1994.
The bees reached an apparent climatic limit to their southern range in the middle of Argentina, and their range is expected to be similarly limited to the southern and coastal states in the United States. They have hybridized to some extent with resident wild and hive populations of European honeybees. However, many of the basic African honeybee traits remain, including rapid population growth, frequent swarming, minimal hoarding of honey, the ability to survive on sparse supplies of pollen and nectar, and a ...
Intro: Working around the hives; dedicated and faster with each movement. Honey drizzling in golden crevices; a family unit working together, buzzing in harmony. Bees and beehives is a significant motif in the novel Secret Life of Bees: By Sue Monk Kidd because it represents the community of women in the novel. It also represents Lily Owen’s longing and need for a mother figure in her life. And finally, it was significant because the bees lived a secret life, just as Lily and Rosaleen did in the novel.
Home in The Secret Life of Bees Sonsyrea Tate’s statement about “home” aligns with Sue Monk Kidd’s novel, The Secret Life of Bees. In this novel, the main character, Lily Owens, embarks on a Bildungsroman journey after leaving her birth home to find her true identity and “home.” The idea of “home” guides Lily on a path of self-discovery and leads her to the pink house and the feminine society that lies within, in which she finds true empowerment and womanhood in her life. “Home” plays an important role in Lily’s journey throughout the novel. Lily feels lost and alone at the Peach House with T. Ray because of his continuous physical and mental abuse.

According to the Baylor College of Medicine (n.d.), Cochlear implantation can cause many adverse effects including bleeding, device malformation, facial nerve weakness, ringing in the ear, dizziness, and infection. One particular infection that can result from cochlear implants is meningitis. Since the implant runs between the middle and inner ear, bacteria that exists in the middle ear can travel to the inner ear which is usually sterile. This can cause an infection in the audotroy nerve which travels to the brain, resulting in meningitis (Baylor College of Medicine, n.d.). Another disadvantage of cochlear implants is the cost. The American Academy of Otolaryngology (2015) suggests that the implants can cost as much as $100,000 including the evaluation, surgery, device, and rehabilitation. This makes it almost impossible for the middle class family to afford the
“‘I’m staying here,’ I said. ‘I’m not leaving.’ The words hung there, hard and gleaming. Like pearls I’d been fashioning down inside my belly for weeks” (Kidd 296). This is one of the examples in Sue Monk Kidd’s novel, the Secret Life of Bees, where Lily has finally transitioned into adulthood. The author communicates the message that throughout the novel Lily endures an emotional struggle that helps build her into the woman she is at the end of the novel with indirect characterization, allusions, and symbolism. These literary devices display the characters’ emotions and feelings throughout the book. In doing this, Kidd establishes the relationships between Lily and the people around her as ones that giver her a hard time, but teach her to be more strong. Therefore, the author included literary devices as a method of emphasizing the maturing of Lily through hardships that she eventually resolves.
It is not unusual for bees to die or colonies to be lost, but the nature and extent reported in the year 2006 was alarming. Statistics gathered in the United States alone show that 50-90% of the bees have been lost so far, due to this scientific phenomenon (Cox-Foster et al., 2007, p. 284). Honeybees play a very major role in the pollination of plants and therefore these huge losses have become a serious concern. There are many reasons that have been floated and acclaimed to be behind CCD and they include pesticides, parasites, electromagnetic radiation, malnutrition, climatic changes, and urban sprawl, among many others.... ...
Think for a moment of a world without bees; a world without our buzzing friend. They might look like they barely do much to help our ecosystem. However, bees are a vital part of our agriculture and this makes it vital that we keep them around. The bee population decline in recent years is troubling for both us and our little friends. As their friends, we must do all we can in order to ensure their survival which in turn will ensure our own.
The purpose of interbreeding with African killer bees is to make the specie stronger so they are not killed by things such as pesticides and starvation. One strength for interbreeding with African killer bees is explained by Associate professor Kirk Visscher. He performed a study of 60 colonies and concluded the 20 colonies that suffered from CCD were the ones without at least one African killer bee in the colony (Ring 11). This shows that the African killer bees are a stronger specie than honey bees, and can withstand to live through hazardous conditions. Another strength is that African killer bees are more resistant to varroa mite which is a deadly parasite greatly affecting the collapse of colonies (Ring 12). There are only two minimal weaknesses for interbreeding with killer bees. They are more difficult to manage in colonies, and they have a more aggressive attitude and more of a likelihood to sting someone (Ring 11,12). These are insignificant problems because, commonly, some bees in regular honey bee hives are hard to manage, and if they were kept in rural areas managed by professionals, then the bees wouldn’t be able to attack anyone. Interbreeding with African killer bees is the best solution because it is the most cost effective way to solve the numerous problems of

According to IDEA an assistive technology device is “any item, piece of equipment, or product system, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of a child with a disability.” However, the exception is any “medical device that is surgically implanted.” Cochlear implants can improve some functional capabilities of a child with a disability and it IS a surgically implanted medical device. However, during the procedure electrodes are surgically inserted into the patient’s cochlea… a medical device is NOT surgically implanted. While, electrodes are not typically considered “medical devices”, when in sync with other medical devices outside of the cochlea, it takes on the role of serving as a “medical device” of that network. This is why there is debate about whether or not a cochlear implant is assistive technology. The gray area comes into play with whether or not they are considered assistive technology because the law is specifically stating that the medical device must be surgically implanted to be considered assistive technology. Thus, because an electrode is only a medical device when the head set and transmitting coil is attached externally, it is questionable as to whether or not this would qualify as “medical device being implanted.” When the external features of the implant are removed (they can be removed at any time),
Deaf people make unique population in the world today but unfortunately, deaf population may extinct due to widespread use of bionic ears, which is cochlear implant. Cochlear implant is a surgically implanted electronic device that provides a sense of sound to a person who is profoundly deaf or hard of hearing. The cochlear implant controversy therefore involve questions about allowing cochlear implant for newborn to ten years old or does the cochlear implant pose a serious threat to deaf community or why wouldn’t a deaf person want to become hearing and forth on. It is harmful both to individual health and the deaf community.
As of December 2012, approximately 324,200 cochlear implants have been implanted worldwide. In the United States, roughly 58,000 devices have been implanted in adults, and 38,999 in children. (December 15, 2016. Quick statistics about hearing)
The lives of humans and honeybees have been intertwined for millennia. For at least 8,000 years, humans have sought honey for applications in disciplines ranging from medicine to the culinary arts. But while humans love honey, honeybees provide a much more valuable service: pollination. As the world’s most prolific pollinator, honeybees are essential to the reproduction of many plant species, which in turn benefits other animals and plants. In fact, humans heavily rely on honeybees to pollinate our own food source, a service that is worth billions of dollars a year. Unfortunately, the honeybee population is in a severe and prolonged decline, often in the form of colony collapse disorder, in which entire colonies are seemingly abandoned by adult bees overnight. Honeybees are an indispensable component of modern agriculture, and a failure to discern and address the many causes of honeybee population decline – both manmade and natural – could have disastrous consequences for the environment and human society.
About the required KSAOs (knowledge, skills, abilities, other characteristics) of being a school teacher, it is crucial to have teachers know firmly about their subject material in order to lecture their students. Also, they should know that every student learns differently and they should have the flexibility instruct the material. Also, teachers should learn appropriate disciplinary styles and techniques. About the required skills for the job, communication skills are
