The Importance of Keeping Your Boat’s Gas Tank Clean There’s nothing like taking your boat out on the water on a clear sunny day. However, you may run into a number of problems that can ruin your trip. One of the most common issues boat owners encounter is a dirty or clogged gas tank. Although it’s normal for a tank to get filthy after several sails, it’s unwise to neglect it because it can cause the following consequences: Poor Boat Performance The gas tank is what keeps your boat running so once it becomes inefficient, your vessel will have a harder time sailing against the current. Your boat will run slower and your overall ride will become bumpy. It’s also possible that your vessel will fail to start. Expensive Boat Repairs If you haven’t used your boat in months, the undrained gas will chemically break down. This causes the fuel components and additives to sink at the bottom of the tank, forming into an unusable sludge. Condensation can also add to the sludge and damage the boat’s tank over time. Although a freshwater tank can be full or color, it does not come close to the fiery colors that are present in a marine aquarium. Unfortunately, all the color and life that a marine aquarium holds is much more fragile and not as easy to keep as a freshwater tank. Therefore, the marine aquarium requires a plethora of devices working together and at optimum levels to maintain a successful tank. Items like protein skimmers, ultraviolet filters, sump filters, reverse osmosis units, and even wave-makers are just a few of the devices that are required to properly maintain a marine aquarium. With the exception to a properly constructed tank, nothing is as important to the marine aquarium as the water within the tank and the lighting given its inhabitants.

Boat exhaust and small traces of gasoline and oil are emitted into the waters when motorized watercraft are running. Boats have been shown to affect water clarity and can be a source of algal growth in aquatic ecosystems. The toxins emitted from boats can add chemicals to the water. Certain amounts of the fuel that is in motors is discharged, unburned, and ends up in the water. Boats may also cause disturbances by creating turbulence and noise thus becoming a problem for larger animals such as large fish or alligators that may be living in the waters. Direct contact of boats or propellers may be a death threat for large animals living in the lake. Pollution from boat exhaust or gasoline spills (if large or consistent) could be toxic to lake wildlife. Boat movement and increased turbidity can affect individual fish directly by disturbing their daily activities such as nesting, mating (including success of eggs), or hunting (including sight-based feeding). Boats may also affect fish and other species through habitat alteration caused by waves or propeller damage.

We will start with the fuel tank. A fuel tank comes in many different sizes depending on how much space is available. Most cars and trucks have only one tank but some trucks have two. Fuel tanks can be made of 3 different things. These are pressed corrosion-resistant steel, aluminum, or molded reinforced polyethylene plastic. The fuel tank has internal baffles or surge plates to prevent the fuel from sloshing back and forth. If you hear splashing in the tank on acceleration or deceleration, this means that the baffles could be broken. All tanks have a fuel filler pipe, a fuel outlet line to the engine and a vent system. All catalytic converter cars are equipped with a filler pipe restrictor so that leaded fuel, which is dispensed from a thicker nozzle, cannot be introduced into the fuel system. All modern fuel tanks include devices that prevent vapors from leaving the tank. All fuel tank designs provide some control of fuel height when the tank is filled. This is achieved by using vent lings within the filler tube or tank. With this design only 90% of the tank is ever full, leaving 10% for expansion. Some vehicles have a over filling limiting valve to prevent overfilling of the tank.
