The Amityville Horror On the date of November 13, 1974, the house at 112 Ocean Avenue had been the scene of a mass murder. Twenty-three year old Robert DeFeo, Jr. shot his parents, two brothers, and two sister to death in the middle of the night. Thirteen months later a young couple by the name of George and Kathleen Lutz, along with their three children, moved into the abandoned house. The family lived in the house for only 28 days. On January 14, 1976 the Lutz family fled from the house, claiming to have been haunted and terrorized by evil spirits living in the house. Kathy Lutz claimed to have been embraced by an unseen force in a loving manner, almost like a mother nurturing her daughter (Anson 40). She also said that the family would smell an odor of perfume and excrement in odd areas of the house where there was no piping that could explain the source (Tom 1). The youngest family member and their only daughter, Melissa (Missy), created an imaginary friend by the name of “Jodie”, a demonic pig-like creature with glowing red eyes (Anson 72). Both boys, Danny and Chris, claimed to have seen a monster in their room and that it tried to grab them (Anson 290). Missy continued to see her pig-like friend named “Jodie”; George even saw the red glowing eyes in his daughter’s window (Anson 263). One night George ran to every room in the house screaming “Get out! Get out in the name of God!” (Anson 230). Nothing worked and it only got worse for the Lutz family. On the morning of January 14, 1976, the Lutz family fled from 112 Ocean Avenue, their new and haunted home in terror, never looking back. A month after they left news started to get around about the house. News reporters, scientific investigators, demonologists, and clairvoyants were in on the story. Even the famous team of demonologists, Ed and Lorraine Warren, made an appearance. Within their investigations, every paranormal researcher said they felt an unexplained negative energy in the house (Anson 302-303). George Lutz made it known to reporters that he nor his family would ever go near the house again. (Anson 302) Many people are skeptical about what happened in that house.
