Kathryn Bolkovac didn’t just blow the whistle on human-trafficking in Bosnia; she called attention to the facilitation of the abuse of women in Bosnia that put her career on the line, in where she uncovered a governmental cover-up. What she uncovered was the corporation DynCorp engaging in a multitude of criminal activity: the physical and mental abuse of women, human-trafficking, forced-prostitution, organized crime which was supported by the Bosnian/United Nations powers to be because they continually allowed this to happen. She uncovered a multitude of human/women’s right’s violations which many were turning a blind eye to. While working for the International Police Task Force, she made a connection between IPTF operatives, local law enforcement (in Bosnia) and the prostitution rings. …show more content…
In her investigation which involved the human-trafficked victims that were able to identify IPTF personnel and many others, the higher-ups’ response was simply to halt the investigation because of various reasons. Kathryn, however didn’t just take no for an answer, regardless of the obstacles that obscured her getting justice for these victims, she managed to escape Bosnia after being terminated from DynCorp with evidence to support her claim against all parties involved. She went on to advocate for these women who had no rights in a country that was just gaining its structure
These incidents of neglect are starting to become another part of her life that she is going to have to find a way to deal with once she can get over the devastation it has caused her. Near the end of her book Theresa says, “Each rejection was devastating. Each time I retreated deeper inside myself. Wounded in another way. The counselor sitting across from me with a look of horror, another in shock, the stranger weeping after hearing what I physically endured...Denial is a balm. People don't want to believe this happens in our country. Let alone in our own communities” (Flores 138). It is a fact that sex trafficking is and was occuring in the United states, but people choose not to take in the knowledge of sex trafficking for various reasons even though many of them know deep down that it is happening, but their choices to neglect those who have suffered from this tragic form of abuse have impacted the victims lives. Theresa has been an influencer for many years now who travels the country and talks to large crowds about human trafficking and her

“Human trafficking coerces and persuades their victims to cross national borders in search of new jobs and better opportunities and after that they are forced into some sort of labor bondage” (At Issue: Human Trafficking 1). Even though trafficking is a problem in almost every country; poorer countries have a bigger problem with it because they are more desperate for work. Just in 2000, the U.S. enacted their first federal anti-trafficking law, called the Victims of Trafficking Protection Act (At Issue: Human Trafficking 1). Trafficking has just begun to receive notice on how big of a problem it actually is. “Proponents of strict anti-trafficking initiatives say that laws and prevention against trafficking are necessary in order to stem the growing tide of large scale organized crime that profits off of smuggling and trafficking” (At Issue: Human Trafficking 1).
Human trafficking is the act of coercing someone into working against his or her will. Anyone can be a victim, especially young girls who are vulnerable to the captor’s lies. Victims have been found anywhere from driving ice cream trucks to touring boys’ choir. In her talk, Noy Thrupkaew shares several examples about how people are deceived and coerced into coming to the United States and being forced to work for someone else. She focuses on how close to home human trafficking really is and how the victims don’t necessarily need saving but solidarity. In Noy Thrupkaew’s speech about human trafficking, she not only shares her own story but also the different situations regarding how the crime functions. Because the speaker

There are many aid projects across the world who claim to help millions of people, but because these aid projects claim to help millions of people, that does not always mean that is the case There are many different aid types, and there can be aid for almost anything an area needs help with. One aid project that not many people know about is called the Polaris Project. After being exposed to a story of six South Korean women being forced to work in a brothel, Katherine Chon and Derek Ellerman were inspired to do something about modern-day slavery (“Katherine Chon and Derek Ellerman: Fighting Human Trafficking" 3). Fast-forward 13 years and the Polaris Project is the world’s leading non-profit human trafficking aid organization in the country. The Polaris Project is the only aid organization to fight against all forms of human trafficking. Human trafficking occurs when a person is forced against his or her own will to engage in sexual acts. Human trafficking can happen to men, women and children; however, it mainly happens to women 18 years and older (“Sex Trafficking in the U.S.” 1). However, a deeper look needs to be taken into this organization to observe if Polaris Project is working effectively at what the organization claims to do.
Our society knows about sex trafficking, the article stated it’s nothing new. We know about it, yet do nothing to help or prevent it from happening. It’s frustrating to me because if more people were helping and knew what was actually going on, my brother wouldn’t have to risk his life. If everyone did one thing to help sex trafficking, I think the world would be a totally different place. It’s not going to end on its own. Seeing my brother courage makes and knowing what actually happens, makes me want to do something to help. By doing nothing and ignoring the situation, we’re only making it worse. The author used facts, facts that are hard to wrap your head around or believe that people could actually do that. She got the point across and was
In 1998, the U.S. government estimated that between 45,000 and 50,000 people were trafficked into the United States annually (U.S. Department of Justice, 2004). Surprisingly, it was not public opinion or human rights groups but big business concerns about labor competition that prompted the awareness of human trafficking in this country (Bales, 2004). Competition and the notion that employers with trafficked employees could complete the work at a fraction of the cost pressed the capitalist system of the United States to begin efforts to eliminate human trafficking. By 2003, the U.S. Department of Justice estimated that between 18,000 and 20,000 individuals were trafficked into the United States (Anderson & Andrijasevic, 2008). After Secretary of State Colin Powell announced that monies acquired through human trafficking were used to support the 9/11 hijackers while they lived in this country, public opinion and government efforts began to ac-knowledge the phenomenon. Legislative and police efforts were initiated to recognize human trafficking as not only a humanitarian interest but also an issue of national security. The 2000 Trafficking Victims Protection Act (here-after TVPA) established the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, in Washington, DC. In February 2002, President Bush signed an
Back to Biswas, if there 's one thing that the article “Human Trafficking Scenario in Bangladesh: Some Concerns” has, it’s facts. Every claim that is made is backed up by facts. This is one of the reasons why this article is better than the other. Biswas argues that human trafficking is not getting any better so we have to do something new to stop it because what we are doing now is not enough. She
In today’s society, where there is political and civil instability in the nations of the world, many citizens become subject to human trafficking. Human trafficking has rapidly grown into a transnational issue. Transnational crimes are often a result of an organized criminal group. These criminal groups quickly exploit the citizens of an unstable country and will send them to other countries while using upgraded technology and the rise of global trade to their advantage. Aside from human trafficking, it also can involve the movement of firearms, vehicles, drugs, or human body parts. Many believe that human trafficking is slavery of the modern-day. Many nations have come together to work on ways to prevent and protect those subject to trafficking.
In 2000, the United States Congress came together in Washington D.C, to take a stand against sex trafficking. Laws and programs that protected women from violence were implemented, and they...
However, all hope is not lost and there have been advances towards the prosecution of human trafficking cases. In 2000, the United States passed the “Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000” (hereinafter referred to as TVPA) which was drafted with the purpose of offering protection to people who are in the country illegally and may be victims of human trafficking. In order to be granted relief under “TVPA”, victims must prove that they were trafficked and submit to prosecution of hi...
... not stopped will shake the foundation of our future. This 'market' has forced men, women and children from all around the world into sexual exploitation as well as physical exploitation. Although certain countries and international organizations are putting in effort, for public awareness and are trying to stop human trafficking from progressing, a lot more can and needs to be done. Strict international laws and tougher sentences for these offences need to be put in place, with harsher punishments for individuals and groups who violate the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. According to estimates, human trafficking is the fastest-growing area of organized crime (United Nations, 2002). It continues to be overlooked by international authorities to this date and international organizations need to step up and handle this issue before it continues to rapidly grow.
However, many agencies across the nation are not aware of the amount of human trafficking occurring around them. In a world of tolerance, many individuals are unaware of their surroundings. Kevin Bales of the nonprofit organization Free the Slaves estimates that 10,000 women a year are trafficked to America for the sex industry alone (Young n. pg). Those 10,000 women all past through security check points somewhere, and had many individuals they also interacted with on their journey. Security and Law Enforcement need to be aware of the signs of human trafficking, and be able to serve justice to those that are oppressing the rights of these women and children. Gary Haugen, worked as counsel in the civil rights division of the U.S. Justice Department, said “Sex trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation can be drastically reduced wherever a country has the political will and the operational capacity to send the perpetrators to jail and to treat the victims with compassion and dignity. This is a fight that can actually be won.” (McKelvey n.
Adolescent girls who get deported from one of their countries to Bosnia typically don 't have forms of I.D., passports and birth certificate which belittles their individual rights as human beings and are sold to work as sex slaves to received food and shelter. As head of the Gender Affairs Office, Kathryn speaks to the one who previously appointed her (Who’s also a woman) in finding whereabouts to how she can uncover this scandal and thus find a lead. In spite of finding out less information from the United Nations, she takes it upon herself to look for the recently missing young girls to bring justice and to do what is right. During the leads, she found information on that following day, which all of the male officers were apparently off for some reason, went to a bar called Florida bar and found horrific images that showed them in their uniform performing sex acts on these young
