I chose this video clip about Julian Newman, the child prodigy in the video, because he is an eleven years old, during the time of the video, on his school’s varsity basketball team. His accomplishment directly demonstrates positive youth development in a couple of ways that affect his social and physical development. The first way regards Julian’s social development which will improve his outcomes and contribute to a healthy and positive life in his future. By Julian interacting with these different aspects of diversity so early in his development it will influence his social development because he will learn to interact without seeing different races or ethnicities, but a team working together to accomplish a goal which could also help his cognitive development in school when he has to work in a group in class to accomplish a goal. Julian sais in the video that he started playing basketball around age three which started his physical development and growth early, improving his future capabilities. Julian’s has been influenced by a non-normative life event or “life events that are specific, atypical events that occur in a particular person’s life at a time when such events do not happen to most people” due to his abilities on the court (Feldman, 2014, p.9). This has influenced his physical abilities in a major way from his environment during a sensitive period in his life where he has gained extra experiences that most do not encounter thus improving his future outcomes in a major way. The main development issues addressed in this video is Arden’s academic and cognitive success. The video shows that a five-year-old has the extreme cognitive abilities. Arden knows every country and capital of the world. He answers the questions so fast when asked that it is astonishing for a five-year-old because I do not even know all of the countries let alone their capitals to and which countries have split up. For just being five, I think that is a huge cognitive and academic development that he has accomplished. The capabilities Arden shows in the video contribute to his development and future outcomes in a very positive way. With the amount of knowledge, he already knows he will most likely keep up that trend and perform well in school due to his cognitive perspective, “the process that emphasizes how people internally represent and think about the world” (Feldman, 2014, p.17). He has already shown a humanistic view in his development where his behavior to learn all of the countries and their capitals on free will (Feldman, 2014, p.24). Both of these facts show a positive outcome for Arden’s future development because this is a good foundation for developing his intellectual abilities and good academic study skills. Most importantly, Brian participated in each practice technique without complaining to his coach or mother. Brian showed compassion to others by sharing a snack with his teammates and younger sister. He displayed the same kindness with a younger boy by kicking back-and-forth a soccer ball with him even though he was not part of the team. Participation in sports has proven to increase self-discipline and self-esteem, and can teach athletes to learn from their mistakes and move on (Issitt). Athletes playing team sports also develop the ability to work well with others and use teamwork in their everyday lives. Teammates form relationships that are strengthened over a common passion and goal. These relationships can last long after high school is over (Chen). These social skills translate into better communication used with an athlete’s family, peers, and in the community. Likewise, “A 2006 study in Maryland found that student athletes are 15 percent more likely than non athletes to be involved in their communities and to take the time for civic engagements, including participating in voting and volunteer activities” (Issitt). The same study also concluded that athletes are far more likely to be comfortable with public speaking than non-athletes. This study provides concrete evidence that high school sports can help to gain mental and social skills that will be used later in life
One of the many benefits of playing sports is the children will build character. Building character is important because with character they will obtain new friends and develop different skills. Playing sports at a young age can build character in many ways, “Playing sports at a young age enables children to participate in social interactions and build skills such as teamwork, leadership, and responsibility as they learn to work with others to achieve a common goal,” (Aspen Institute). This is a benefit because they will build character from learning how to deal with wins and losses from playing sports. Also, they will develop different skills. Developing different skills will build character because, “numerous positive developmental indicators have been associated with sport participation, including improved self-esteem, emotional regulation, problem-solving, goal attainment, social skills, and academic performance,” (Holt). This shows how when children play sports that some of them acquire different skills than others. Sports specialization among young people is when a child or teenager trains for and competes in only one sport. They work extremely hard year-round in order to become well-rounded in every aspect of the game. They make sacrifices and put their health in jeopardy in order to become the ultimate participant in their sport. One of the many young athletes who is only participating in and focusing on one sport is fifteen-year-old OJ Mayo from Cincinnati, Ohio. He is the young talented athlete who is predicted to be the next LeBron James in the National Basketball Association (NBA). This young athlete provides evidence of striving for perfection in this single sport when reviewing his daily schedule versus that of his siblings. He says, “The other kids go home and sleep. I come back to the gym” (Thompson, 2004). He is obviously putting forth a lot of effort in his sport to become successful at an early age.
“The odds of a high school basketball player making it to the “next level” to play college basketball (DI, II, or III) is slim. In fact, only 3.4% of high school players go on to play college basketball. Taking it even further, only 1.2% of college basketball players go on to get drafted in the NBA” (Winters, 2016). There are two types of players in the game. There are the kids who play basketball because they are athletic, and all they are seeking to gain is the recognition and awards. They want to be known. Those players are self-centered, they do not play for the team, and generally don’t play because they love the game. These are the types of players who don’t usually go on to play at the next level. On the other hand, there are the players that absolutely dedicate their life to the game of basketball just because they love the game. That is what coaches are looking for in a player, and that is the kind of player I am striving to be.

There is evidence to suggest that because of participation, they have a better attendance in school, better grades associated with good behavior in school, and less trouble and rarer discipline issues.
