I chose this video clip about Julian Newman, the child prodigy in the video, because he is an eleven years old, during the time of the video, on his school’s varsity basketball team. His accomplishment directly demonstrates positive youth development in a couple of ways that affect his social and physical development. The first way regards Julian’s social development which will improve his outcomes and contribute to a healthy and positive life in his future. By Julian interacting with these different aspects of diversity so early in his development it will influence his social development because he will learn to interact without seeing different races or ethnicities, but a team working together to accomplish a goal which could also help his cognitive development in school when he has to work in a group in class to accomplish a goal. Julian sais in the video that he started playing basketball around age three which started his physical development and growth early, improving his future capabilities. Julian’s has been influenced by a non-normative life event or “life events that are specific, atypical events that occur in a particular person’s life at a time when such events do not happen to most people” due to his abilities on the court (Feldman, 2014, p.9). This has influenced his physical abilities in a major way from his environment during a sensitive period in his life where he has gained extra experiences that most do not encounter thus improving his future outcomes in a major way. The main development issues addressed in this video is Arden’s academic and cognitive success. The video shows that a five-year-old has the extreme cognitive abilities. Arden knows every country and capital of the world. He answers the questions so fast when asked that it is astonishing for a five-year-old because I do not even know all of the countries let alone their capitals to and which countries have split up. For just being five, I think that is a huge cognitive and academic development that he has accomplished. The capabilities Arden shows in the video contribute to his development and future outcomes in a very positive way. With the amount of knowledge, he already knows he will most likely keep up that trend and perform well in school due to his cognitive perspective, “the process that emphasizes how people internally represent and think about the world” (Feldman, 2014, p.17). He has already shown a humanistic view in his development where his behavior to learn all of the countries and their capitals on free will (Feldman, 2014, p.24). Both of these facts show a positive outcome for Arden’s future development because this is a good foundation for developing his intellectual abilities and good academic study skills.
