Anish Dayal Dr. Brian Moon MUS. 109C 4/19/14 Journal Two Part I Song #1 “suitcase” by Keb’ Mo’ The song, “Suitcase” by the delta blues artist Keb’ Mo’, the song gives off the vibe of a classic blues song revamped with the best parts of country genre. The lyrics of the song lead me to believe that the word “suitcase” is another word for “responsibility” and throughout the song Keb’ Mo” uses the lyrics “got a suitcase, I take it everywhere I go” which I personally translate to “I have my responsibility, I take it everywhere”. As the song progresses we are introduced to a female character that also has a “suitcase” who then becomes a wife to Keb’ Mo’, at least in the song, and makes a family and “gave them all a suitcase too”. Nearing the end of the song they began having trouble as “the house got too small, the bags got too big” to the point where the wife is feed up and kicks out Keb’ Mo to which he begs to stay. At the end of the song he repeats and altered verse of the introduction of the song and end with the phrase “It's a big old bag of trouble, I don't need no more” Song #2 “Bright Lights Bigger City” by CeeLo Green The song, “Bright Lights Bigger City” by the “neo-soul” artist CeeLo Green, the song gives off the atmosphere and mood of a typical club in the real world or even a soundtrack of what your life could be as you walking through the well-lit city on a weeknight living into the moment as if it were your last. The genre despite it being classified as the new style “neo-soul” takes similar harmonies and effects to that of the “electric” and “pop” genres as to better improve its overall sound and cater to both its intended audience and unbiased listeners alike. Through this assignment I have found a new respect for the song and its simplicity and overall appeal with the vocaloid culture that I am involved in both as a listener and an artist. Through this assignment I have also been given a deeper insight into Deco*27 as an artist and how he effectively conveys his music as an art through both the vocaloid system and, in this case, through his own talents as a singer.
A Bedouin is a nomad and a nomad a wanderer. Nathaniel Mackey seems to wander far and away in his Bedouin Hornbook, a series of fictional letters addressed to an “Angel of Dust” and signed by the ambiguous “N.” N. interprets passages of improvisation, analyzing others’ musical expression in surprising detail to the point that his unquestioning sincerity and self-assurance are almost laughable. That N. can glean meaning from music in such a direct and certain manner is problematic because his tone implies that there is only one correct interpretation of music. In addressing the issue of how music conveys meaning, Mackey seems to wander in two disparate directions. After asserting each seemingly contradictory view, first that music and speech are simply ends in themselves and second that they are means to a separate end, Mackey reconciles the question through his motivic discussion of absence and essence.
Others do not explore the significance of how blues music relates to the commonly-agreed-upon basic themes of individualism and alienation. The chief value of living with music lies in its power to give us an orientation in time. In doing so, it gives connotation to all those indefinable aspects of experience, which nevertheless helps us make what we are. Though Holden’s interactions with Dick Slagle is for a short amount of time, Salinger shows how class differences can lead to conflicts over small things such as suitcases. When Holden observes that Slagle does not take his suitcases out from under his bed because they are cheap, he recognizes that Slagle is ashamed of his suitcases, which is why he responds by putting his suitcases under his bed just like Slagle. This song implies that individual’s are violating the norms and values of society. They start the song with a verse that expresses this concern. “What’s wrong with the world, mama/ People livin’ like they ain’t got no mamas…” (lines 1-2). This makes one aware of the disobedience of values that are held in the family. Values are “standard[s] of judgment by which people decide on desirable goals and outcomes.” (Newman, 32) Another verse in this song that illustrates how society is defying norms and values is when they sing: “People killin', people dyin'/ Children hurt and you hear them cryin/ Can you practice what you preach/ And would you turn the other cheek…” (lines 50-53). These lines utter that society has failed to act in a sane and coherent way that society once viewed as correct. The actions affirm that individuals are not living up to society’s norms. In this essay I will attempt to decipher how Frank Sinatra changed music. I will try to understand what made his music so different, unique, and genuine that we still worship him like a god today. In addition, I expect to discover how he changed as a person over his five decade career. I want to analyze who he associated himself with, assuming the possibility that these people had an effect on his music and persona. I believe that while his music changed as did his personality. I trust that when Sinatra originally started singing with the glee club of Demarest High School, he had no idea of where his life was heading, nor the legend he was going to become. Thus, as his fame progressed and evolved so did his music and disposition. In my own opinion, there is no one archetypal Sinatra song or album; honestly I don’t even believe that there is even one true Frank Sinatra style. His five decade career seemed to divide into three distinctive eras. Nonetheless, in order to reflect on one’s life we must start from the beginning.
The artist I've chosen to discuss in this paper is the band Daft Punk. Daft Punk consists of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo who became friends 1987 in secondary school, and are from Paris, France. The band formed in 1992 under the name “Darlin'” with a third member, Laurent Brancowitz, who later left the group and formed the band Phoenix. Daft Punk was a large part in the growing popularity of the “house” genre of music in France in the late 1990's.

The song opens with hope, “Helplessly Hoping”, that even in despair, there is hope. The word choice in the song is evocative and elegant, but it can have different meanings. The words are full of mystery, and the alliteration can make one’s spirit uplifting. The song is a non-verbal dialogue between a guy who loves a girl, waiting for her, and wonders about her love for him. The guy is being her harlequin, who hovers close to her, so she could notice him. The guy sees the girl’s good qualities, and true and kind spirit she has. Spirit is considered something that flows in the air, so that is why he wished he could fly and grasp her.
The best original song award went to Dion over Wilson’s hero Elliot Smith, who made authentic music “with sighing melodies and lyrics laced with corrosive rage” (Wilson, 6). Wilson began looking into taste and what kept these tastes from intervening at some point. Wilson considered Dion’s music “bland monotony and obnoxious”. The criticism towards “underground” music made it impossible to judge it based on the same criteria as upcoming mainstream. Criticism is less objective and lasting and the gap between critical acclaim and popularity widens.
