In a Lonely part of the alaskan wilderness a pack of wolves howls with the happiness of a recent meal. Joshua Gardner was a military policeman. He grew up in the suburbs of Harrisburg, SD (next to Sioux Falls) with his mother and step dad. He had one full sister a half sister and a stepbrother who annoyed him. He had a few good friends, and after he turned 18 he moved into an apartment with Austin. The apartment was both of their first and Josh was going to college so it was a fairly inexpensive apartment. By fairly inexpensive I mean that it was one of the nastiest apartments i’d ever been in. Anyway it was in harrisburg and cheap so they took the opportunity. After Josh’s first year in college he decided to give it a break for a year you …show more content…
It was on his way down from the 250ft training building that he was told about the wreck. He was focusing on holding when the drill sergeant yelled at him to get down here. At the time Josh thought that the sergeant just wanted him to go faster, but when he got down he learned what had happened. At the hospital he found his mother and sibling in movielike hospital beds. Both of them seemed to be ok but Josh still decided to spend the night with them for the first day or so. It was at 2:34 in the morning when Josh was awakened by a long, consistent, high pitched beep. He woke up groggily trying to think of where he had heard that sound before. It was when he looked at his sister's heart monitor that he remembered. Someone’s heart had stopped and he saw that it wasn’t his sister’s heart that had flatlined but his mother’s. He instantly went into panic mode. Josh ran out of the room looking for someone to help. Two weeks later at his mother's funeral a tear falls from his eye. The guard gave him a two month leave. No one around him seemed to understand what he was going through his mother was the only family that he was close to. And every time someone tried to comfort him it had the opposite effect. He was becoming a recluse and didn’t really talk to …show more content…
He thought that bootcamp prepared him for what he was about to face. He had been walking for a couple of hours constantly checking the 99 cent map that he had bought back at the airport. He continued walking for a couple days making sure that he was a decent distance out from where he had come in. On the third day he finally decided to find a spot to make camp. On the way out the game had been plentiful and he had been eating rabbits for all 3 meals. The Night that he had finally settled it snowed about 3 feet and boxed him into the shelter he had made. When he finally got out and stumbled above the snow he realized he had made a mistake, he had not brought snowshoes. He decided to try to make a pair. 3 hours later he had the crudest pair of snowshoes he had seen, he wasn't even sure if he could call them snowshoes. He grabbed his brand new .22 and headed out to get breakfast. On his way out he saw a couple of tracks that he had identified as canine. After three hours of hunting and he had not seen anything he thought that was rather abnormal considering that he had eaten well the whole way out. But he was down for a challenge. So he tried another

Sam and Josh have a friendly relationship. "Sam doesn't order me to do anything. He's my friend. I live on his farm. I do what he says" Josh says. (page 36). “That’s why I don’t put up with anyone’s hard luck story,’ Josh said. ‘I’ve been there. I’ve beaten it. I’ve started putting my life together again. If I can, anyone can.” (Page 307). This was the perfect representation of how Josh connected to Brett about exactly how he has learnt to forget and move on from his past and improve himself, displaying that if Josh could push through a hard time in his life, then so can Brett. That's when Brett realised that he was lucky to have normal parents who were respectable
officers that he did not know why they were there, was pushed to the ground and

Billy is coming home from work one day when suddenly he hears some dogs up the street fighting. He goes to check it out and finds them picking on a redbone hound. He saves the dog and cares for it through the night. It reminds him of his childhood. When Billy was ten years old he lived on a farm in the Ozark Mountains of northeastern Oklahoma. He wanted two good coonhounds very badly, he called it “puppy love”, but his papa could not afford to buy him the dogs. For many months, Billy tries to content himself with some rodent traps his papa gives him, but he still wants a dog. Then one day he finds a sportsman’s catalog in an abandoned campsite. In it he sees an ad for good hounds, at $25 each. He decides he wants to save $50 and order himself two hounds. Billy works hard, selling fruit and bait to fishermen, and gathering fruit that he sells to his grandfather at his store. Finally, he saves enough money and gives it to his grandfather to order the dogs for him and asks him to keep it s secret. When a notice comes that they have arrived at the mail depot in the nearby town of Tahlequah, they decide to go into town the next week. That night Billy decides he can not wait any longer. He packs himself a little food, and heads of for town following the river through the woods. He walks all night, and finally reaches town in the morning. The people in town laugh and stare at the young hillbilly, but it does not bother Billy he is there on a mission to get his dogs. He finally collects his dogs and walks back out of town with their small heads sticking out of his bag. Some schoolchildren mob around him and knock him down, but the town sheriff rescues him. The sheriff is impressed with Billy’s determination, and says he has grit. That, night Billy camped in a cave with his two puppies. They wake up in the middle of the night to hear the call of a mountain lion. Billy builds a fire to keep them safe, while the bigger of the two dogs, the male, barks into the night air.

When he first wakes up he just kind of stares at nothing, he can’t respond or even focus on anyone it seems. After the accident he has to learn everything by observing those around him and what they are doing. He also seems to listen to the sounds, expressions, and words they make to try and make sense of what’s going on around him and what are the people doing to him.
The time spent at training camp prepared the boys for what was to come, by making them tough and brutal, while at the same time creating an army that does not stop to question its orders.
He heard a knock on the door and grandma got to it before him. He stood behind the corner waiting to see who it was. It was unfortunately two police officers. It may, when it occurred, have been Tony’s most moving scene, but it was topped by the wrenching, unforgettable episode in which AJ tried to commit suicide in his parents’ pool. Tony, seeing it just in time, threw down the sandwich he was eating, jumped in and rescued him. His first reaction after fishing the boy out was to shake him and say angrily, “What’s wrong with you?” His next was to ask: “Are you alright?” And his third was to break down in tears, hold him and say, over and over, “Oh, my baby.” In a way, it brought father as well as son back from the brink. Tony, who the previous week had murdered his surrogate son, Chris (as he possessed a threat to Tony’s life), now saved his real one.” (Cushman)
