Joseph Lister is known as the “Father of Modern Surgery”. Joseph Lister had many influential people he looked up to. He was inspired to help the world from a young age, starting with his parents to other scientists. In his many years of life he had many accomplishments. Joseph Lister also got many awards for what he did and how he helped contribute to the way that the medical field works now. Even though when Lister was alive not much was know, he did a lot to advance the knowledge to what we know and understand now. Joseph Lister made a huge contribution to the biological community, even though he is not always recognized for his work.

It was not until shortly after Lister’s discovery that things started picking up. During this time surgeries were very risky. Most times patients would develop infections and die shortly after even if the surgery itself had been successful. It was believed that exposer to “bad air” caused infections. Joseph Lister received many awards. The first award, he was bestowed with the Royal Medal in 1880. “The royal medal is awarded by a king or queen for the most important contribution to the advancement of natural knowledge” (Royal Medal). Lister also received the Albert medal in 1894. The Albert medal is given to recognize people who saved others lives. In 1883, Queen Victoria made him a Baronet and then raised him to Baron Lister in 1897. A Baronet is the lowest titled British order, they use the title “sir” and a Baron is the lowest order of the British nobility, they use the title “Lord.” Lister also won the Copley Medal in 1902, “In recognition of the value of his physiological and pathological researches in regard to their influence on the modern practice of surgery” (Who is Joseph Lister?) The Copley medal is given by the Royal Society, London for “outstanding achievement in any branch of science” (Copley Medal).
