Jonas's Society In 'The Giver'

“ He killed it! My father killed it!”. Woah! , now that is something unexpected for both Jonas and us . In The Giver book Jonas changes over the course of the novel by realizing how his society handles issues go against his values , by knowing the past , and making decisions that would impact the rest of his life. First of the various changes is when he realizes his society’s system. Jonas first notices that his society’s system is a little dark when he gets his instructions that he could lie if necessary. Then Jonas learns that a Ceremony of Release isn’t what is sounds like. On page 151 of The Giver Book it says “Well, there you are, Jonas. You were wondering about release, he said in a bitter voice. Jonas felt a ripping sensation inside himself, the feeling of terrible pain….” Because Jonas pondered about release he discovered a horrible truth , and starts changing everything about how he sees the community. …show more content…

When Jonas went for his apprenticeship he learned that memories would have been passed down to him from The Giver and the first few memories were kind and peaceful as shown on Page 96 of The Giver book, “ I’m going to give you a memory of a rainbow” This was a memory that Jonas didn’t experience and suffering in contrast to what’s shown on page 109 of The Giver Book “It was if a hatchet lay lodged in his leg, slicing through each nerve with a hot blade”. Here Jonas describes how he feels due to the Memory. Because Jonas learned about what happened in the past, he understands a few reasons of why his community runs how it does, but also detest others that take out the fun of what used to be
