The Johnson Family has many members, the focus of the assessment is the couple, Celie and Albert. Celie’s abuse began at a young age, with her father sexually assaulting her on multiple occasions. These assaults led to two pregnancies, each time the child was removed by her father only moments after birth. First, Celie had a son named Adam and later had a daughter named Olivia. Celie is unaware if her children are safe for the majority of her life, only finding out many years later, that they are safe and healthy. Celie has a close relationship with her younger sister Nettie, and the need to survive their father’s abuse brought them even closer. Continuing her father’s pattern of abuse, he marries a young girl named Gray. Albert was widowed …show more content…
All of the boundaries Albert sets are damaged boundaries as he often does not voice them to others and uses violence and threats to enforce them. All of Celie's boundaries, whether they be physical, sexual, emotional, or spiritual, are ignored from the time she was a young girl until she leaves Albert’s farm with Shug. Years of this abuse caused her to create walls in every aspect. Celie becomes shut down and unattached from the world around her for many years after Nettie is removed from the home. Her emotional boundaries are ignored yet again as Albert has an affair with Shug in the same home as Celie. After years of her Father ignoring her sexual boundaries, she marries Albert, and her sexual boundaries are ignored again, causing her to create a wall. She begins to create healthy boundaries again once she has her shop and feels as though she has control of her life for the first time. There is also a strong spiritual theme throughout the movie, highlighted by Shug’s relationship with her …show more content…
The inspiring part of this film is the healing journey. Celie learns to stand up for herself, become independent, and create a support system around her. Albert learns to support Celie by sending for Nettie and Celie’s children, he also learns to give her space and not use his kind acts as leverage to control Celie. This is shown as Nettie and Celie reunite and he continues to walk his horse in the distance, letting them reconnect without ever taking credit. Sofia gets to live the rest of her life on the farm, seeing her children and Harpo. Harpo has a family, and it appears that he has taken steps to lessen the physical abuse trends in his family. Shug Avery marries a nice man and reconnects with her father after years of not speaking. It is inspiring to see that after all the years of a cycle of abuse, they are able to recover and learn to care for each other in their own ways. While the film addresses extremely dark and upsetting topics, this needs to be shown as a reminder that family violence is an incredibly intricate and interwoven concept that cannot be solved overnight, no matter how much we would like
This movie was able to demonstrate that when someone is diagnosed with a disorder in a family especially if is a child how it can affect the family. The parents could have more attention towards the child and forget that they have other kids that need them as well. There could also be tension between the mother and father because they might want to deal with everything a different way. The whole family just needs to be united and accommodate to have a new lifestyle where everyone is included in the
...ing identity to the point where it no longer exists. This identity can be lost through extreme devotion, new experience, and immense tragedy. Relationships with the most meaningful companions impact both main characters, Elie and Frederic. Due to the events they must encounter alongside loved ones, Elie and Frederic change completely, losing the identity that once existed. The most impactful events of any life are those that involve struggle and tragedy. Any tragic event that one encounters can significantly alter the purpose of life forever. Tragic events such as taking away what one may hold dearest, such as a loved one in the cases of Elie and Frederic. This type of loss can create a saddened, purposeless life in all humans.
James McBride ends the book on a high note leaving the conspicuous notion of the truth of life’s difficulties and the truth that things can get better. He says it in his own words and I quote, “This isn’t the movies; this is the real world…Love is unstoppable. It is our greatest weapon, a natural force, created by God.” (292) The book seems to be a collection of their lives’ tribulations all leading up to the impact of the combination of two in success, the success of a successful family and the finding of their selves.
All through the times of the intense expectation, overwhelming sadness, and inspiring hope in this novel comes a feeling of relief in knowing that this family will make it through the wearisome times with triumph in their faces. The relationships that the mother shares with her children and parents are what save her from despair and ruin, and these relationships are the key to any and all families emerging from the depths of darkness into the fresh air of hope and happiness.
Throughout the novel, crucial family members and friends of the girl that died are meticulously reshaped by her absence. Lindsey, the sister, outgrows her timidity and develops a brave, fearless demeanor, while at the same time she glows with independence. Abigail, the mother, frees herself from the barbed wire that protected her loved ones yet caused her great pain, as well as learns that withdrawing oneself from their role in society may be the most favorable choice. The family that I am meeting is the Walls family; they are Rex the father, Rose the mother, Lori the oldest daughter, Jeannette, Brian the only boy, and then baby Maureen. The mother and father don’t seem to have any high levels of education, but seem to know more than they let onto. The children are extremely bright. The children have been in and out of school, but are levels above children their own age. Their father is from Welch, West Virginia his mother Erma and her husband also Rex’s brother Stanley lives in Welch with the grandparents. They are on the deeper lower end of poverty and the father has had job after job but does not seem to ever settle down in one he just continues to move from one after another. The mother had a job working
...they deserved something positive in return. These people in Rosewood suffered because of the color of their skin and not anything else. I have realized that I am lucky to have the choices I have in my education, and athletics, and I am grateful to be able to play basketball for my school—as back in the times that they lived, they were simply lucky to be alive and did not have any choice in sports to play or fun to have. They simply worked for white people, and tried to stay away from death. They were not given the chances that I have today. This movie gave me a new, grateful and thankful view on the society I live in today.
This movie was inspiring and encouraging to anyone who is struggling with something. Overcoming his controversies in life became the main point of the movie. Knowing that this movie was based upon a true story inspires the people even more.
I thought that It showed a lot of courage when charlie's dad went over to help defend the Lu family from the drunk townsmen who were beating jefferies farther. This was mainly because it would of been an uncomfortable position for charlie's father because he is defending the vietnamese which for everyone else in the town is wrong because of the war going on in vietnam and since lots of husbands, sons and men have gone to war against them even though the Lu family hadn't done anything wrong it's just because of their race. This has showed me how important it is to stick up for others no matter what everyone else is saying or their race or anything because a lot of the time like in this situation Mr Lu was getting beaten and his wife get hit and his son was getting bullied just because of their race even though they were perfectly nice and friendly people. Another thing this novel taught me was that if you work hard and don't give up even when someone tells you too, don't because in the end if you work the hardest it will always pay off. This was demonstrated when Jefferies played cricket and would practice so much and when he finally made the team it turned out he was actually the best player on the team and got them a lot of runs and
The movie teaches us to look beyond the cover and into who someone is as a person. We also learn that sometimes contact with people makes us reconsider our judgement towards them, to find out the real person underneath.
This movie is a wonderful production starting from 1960 and ending in 1969 covering all the different things that occurred during this unbelievable decade. The movie takes place in many different areas starring two main families; a very suburban, white family who were excepting of blacks, and a very positive black family trying to push black rights in Mississippi. The movie portrayed many historical events while also including the families and how the two were intertwined. These families were very different, yet so much alike, they both portrayed what to me the whole ‘message’ of the movie was. Although everyone was so different they all faced such drastic decisions and issues that affected everyone in so many different ways. It wasn’t like one person’s pain was easier to handle than another is that’s like saying Vietnam was harder on those men than on the men that stood for black rights or vice versa, everyone faced these equally hard issues. So it seemed everyone was very emotionally involved. In fact our whole country was very involved in president elections and campaigns against the war, it seemed everyone really cared.
...ng the underlying theme that drives the story and the movie, propels the reader and viewer to rekindle the desire to hope above all else because hope is all one has in devastating as well as dire needs. Hope overcomes despair, permits others to see your “inner light” to develop integrity which connects with honesty and trust. Hope is the inspiration to continue to live regardless of the circumstances. Red may have narrated; “Let me tell you something my friend. Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane.” But, Andy Dufresne states it best: “Get busy living, or get busy dying.”
What establishes a noble, valuable, enjoyable life? Many philosophers tried their own beliefs to these ancient and most persistent of philosophical question. Most of Philosophers have agreed that the best possible life is a life where the ideas of “virtue” and “happiness” are fulfilled. Nevertheless expected differences in terms, many great minds theorized that the road to a joyful, flourishing, happy life is paved with virtues. For example, Aristotle believed that anyone keen to live a virtuous life will reach happiness (Aristotle 1992). Also according to Roman Cicero, the bonds between virtue and happiness are very strong, that a virtuous person could still be happy even if he is tortured (McMahon 2006). In addition, Rosalind Hursthouse contended that owning virtue does not essentially result in happiness, as luck plays an irrefutable part in human’s life; however it is the best bet for a good life (Hursthouse 1999). Exactly the same like taking on a healthy routine is the best way for being healthy, although it does not assurance perfect health. In my opinion, there is a strong connection between virtue and happiness, yet there are some exceptions.
Not only does this movie deal with the issues of society, but it points to biblical scriptures that help lead us in the right direction. The biggest lesson that this film taught me was that if I put my complete faith in God, then no matter what happens, he will provide, watch over, and take care of me. I learned that expressing belief in God is not enough. I have to live everyday believing and trusting him and I have to show my trust and faith through my actions and my words.
