John Quincy can be classified as primary deviance since he never killed or hurt anyone. He only caused this lockdown because his son had been dying and desperate times had called for desperate measure. John was a struggling hard worker father and husband. He lived by each paycheck he received, with his son Michael and wife who worked at a super market and barely made minimum wage. Everything seemed to be a normal, John taking his son to school everyday, attending the regular Sunday little league baseball games. Until on tragic morning, the family was out for another one of Michael’s games when he collapsed on the field. His son ended up needed a heart transplant and the family did not have enough money for the surgery, no matter how much John …show more content…
was able to raise, donate and sell. Nothing had been good enough, he was still short thousands of dollars and his insurance could not cover everything. Frustrated and confused John knew he had to do something since his son was dying and he still did not have enough money for the heart surgery. John took an unarmed gun and caused a lockdown in the hospital. During this lockdown this created a media explosion, everyone was gathering around to see John Q a quiet man who “would never hurt a fly” creating such a scene for his only son. When family and friends saw John on national live television, fighting for his dying child to get a heart transplant. This moved so many people and opened their eyes to see that it is not fair, without the proper insurance, someone cannot get the proper medical service. In the end, John Quincy was not a deviant character. He can only be described as primary deviance since this was his first time actually committing a deviant crime. Family and friends were interviewed and all had confirmed that John is a good father, would do anything to protect his family from falling into more poverty and even their lives no matter what the cost. Therefore John, holding people hostage was not out of a murderous rant. This was solely to get his son’s name on the donor list, so his son had a chance to survive. 2.) Many factors were shown through the movie, that led up to John’s deviant action of holding people hostages and causing a lockdown.
In the beginning of the movie, it showed his car being towed since he did not have enough money to pay the bank. The car being taken away, should his family was in poverty and barely made ends meet. Even though both parents worked their jobs none of this was enough to live comfortably. There debt created tension in the family, because the mother now had no car to travel to work. She yelled at John in the opening scenes, stressing John out telling he better fix it. The second example had been when John’s son had first fallen ill and the parents found out that their son needed a heart transplant. This had hocked and confused on what the couple should do to cover such an expensive treatment. John ended up selling many of their precious and valuable items to cover the cost of the surgery. Ultimately, this was still not enough or even close to the cost of undergoing the operation. John was still frustrated and lost even more hope when he found out his insurance was not able to cover the …show more content…
cost. The last issue that influenced John’s behavior had been when his wife called John up to say the hospital was discharging their son. During the call, the wife again in anger and desperation told John he better come up with a way to fix this problem and now. Hearing the news about his son confused his since he just the day before made a down payment to the hospital. After confronting the doctor, and the doctor saying there was nothing he could do or was there anything that could be done. John flew into an angry rage, and demanded his son’s name be put on the list. 3.) John had committed this action out of choice, in society no one can just kidnap a group on individuals and expect to get the same results that this movie achieved.
He knew that holding people hostage would get him in deep trouble with the law, he still decided to go through with it because he son’s health means everything to him. At the end of the movie, John had almost taken away his own life just so his son can live. The action of deviance was only committed because of the strong love and bond John has for his son. He knew that creating a ruckus was the only way to get the media to open their eyes and realize that his son needed a heart transplant. 4.) There were two overall messages in this film, the first is that deviant acts are done by many factors in a person’s life or community. The second was the importance of everyone in The United States having the health care insurance, to be able to receive the necessary surges or treatments to continue living their
lives. John Q in the beginning of the movie had no reason to commit any violence crimes since he was not making a lot but just enough to support his family. Only when his son needed a heart, was the main factor for John’s deviant crimes. Without the major influence of his son, John would never dream of going into the local hospital and keeping random people hostage. Another message shown in the movie was the importance of America having health care for everyone. Denying a sick or dying citizen the proper medicine or resources to survive should not be constitutional. This should be a basic right for everyone in society; going into a hospital and threatening innocent lives should not achieve this.

For example, Theodore Dalrymple writes of a woman so terrified by her boyfriend and filled with hopelessness that she tries to do the unthinkable and take her own life by overdose even though months before while in a drunken state she becomes pregnant, yet again by another abuser, and has shown a pattern of moving from relationship to relationship to escape one abuser only to crawl into the arms of another. With no money the government of England provides this young woman with a way to flee her abuser by gifting her with groceries to feed her children who have no escape from the everyday monotony of living such a life, a home warmed in the winter and cooled in the summer that has also been supplied with modern day appliances and entertainment such as furniture, a refrigerator, stove, and TV’s. With no repayment required due to lack of funds on the recipients half she will once again as Theodore Dalrymple states “invite him there” once again without the consequence of losing all that she has been
This movie has immaculately shown the negative influences people and drugs have on society. From the film, I will take views that will affect the way I see things and make myself more aware of the dangers within substandard
“[Has] there always been something between himself and the boy that neither of them understood? “No.” he said to himself. “No, it’s your fault. It’s always been your fault.” (76) The Father realizes how oblivious he has been towards Johnny’s needs. It has always been his fault for not being there for Johnny. He does not know a single thing that is currently happening in Johnny's life. John was blind to how important this banquet was to his son. All John did by going was make the tension between father and son grow with a negative impact. His lack of effort towards reconciliation, actions of betrayal and embarrassment are the reason he is at fault. He can not blame Johnny for his actions because having a drunk father who lifts you in the air and then nearly knocks over a table is embarrassing. I believe the point at which John begins to have his epiphany is when he was talking to Johnny on the way to the banquet. “As they passes the schoolyard he asked the boy how the softball team was doing.... He [realizes] the he [did not] even know what position his own son played, or even the name of the team.” (68) (69) That makes it clear that John does not attend any of his sons games. That means he is not getting much attention from his father. His father showed signs of marginalization towards Johnnys needs but seems like he has changed by the end of the
...a informative message. These two messages are what makes for a good children’s movie when it comes demonstrating how to be a good citizen. In the article Exploring Neighborhood Effects on Health and Life Satisfaction: Disentangling Neighborhood Racial Density and Neighborhood Income related to a positive message from the movie, because in the movie the plot is about preserving historical neighborhoods and small businesses and this study can relate to how depending on what neighborhood you live in can affect you as a person. In the article “You can do it!”: The role of parental encouragement of bravery in child anxiety treatment related to another positive message because in the movie Arnold was being a brave kid and trying to save his neighborhood from being destroyed. Overall the movie had a lot of positive messages in the movie that will make for better children.
The climax of the story is when John realizes that the man and all the
character captures pity and sympathy from the readers. Although John is set to be an honest farmer that
John’s life was no hope skip in the park, he suffered from a horrible childhood and it carried into his adulthood. John still failed and had to live with those failures. The failures act at him from one day to the next, he wanted so badly to succeed in something it drove him insane. His ambition was strong that he tried hard to overcompensate in a spectacular achievement, but when that fell short he went over the edge and started acting in an asocial behavior. When you mix low self-worth and anger you end up with a lethal weapon, a murder. The mystery of who killed Kathy is still up in the air, although there’s enough evidence that points straight to John, as he was the last person to be around her. His rage had grown some much over time that lost control and killed Kathy because that way she could never leave him. By him killing Kathy as sad as it is he would have finally succeeded in something, which leads him to disappear also in order to not get caught. The human mind a simply and fragile part of the body it needs to maintain a balance in order to be stable. Once that balance is broken so is the stability. That is when you create a monster on the inside that is just waiting to be
First, he goes up on the stage and makes a fool of himself raising his son’s hand in the air like an idiot. Then he stumbles back to his seat knocking “a vase of flowers and a couple plates... to the floor with a loud crash” (6). He plays this off like a joke not even realizing “[his] boy was sobbing silently” (6). At this point John still finds humor in this whole situation. He tries to tell his son “it was really nothing [and that] it'll be forgotten in a day or two”(7). All Johnny wanted was to be left alone and his father could not even do that, causing Johnny to go “running down the street”(7) It is not until this point that John realizes everything about his relationship with his son was his
In the end we find out that John had not raped and killed the two little girls he was found with, but instead he had happened upon them and tried to bring them back to life; only it was too late. Seeing the fantastical nature of the situation the guards who knew the truth were unable to free John of the charges he was facing and they had to kill him anyways.
Through the multiple of characters, many different attitudes towards this medium are shown. For example, both George Crawford and Vincent Simmons are men fighting to prove their innocents. On the other hand, Eugene Tanniehill and Ashanti Witherspoon have come to grips with their actions and are strive to become better individuals through the correctional system. The various attitudes of the men relay the idea that the correctional sector can be viewed as good or bad depending on ones
In addition to the above, John was a go-getter and a calculated risk taker. Even though his act of abduction seemed impulsive, a scene before his act saw him thinking intently about what he was going to do and how exactly he was going to achieve it. He had one goal in mind which was to save his son and he pressed towards that with focus a...
At the beginning of the play, John only cares about his personal issues and he is afraid of getting involved. John’s fear reveals the theme of, when one conceals one's sins, one leaves one's self vulnerable to one's enemies. When
Throughout this time the events are so very believable, that John is experiencing all these things, you then discover that most of it was in his mind. Thankfully with his wife's help he is able to deal with this illness and come out okay in the end. He even wins the Noble Prize in 1994. The message I received was to try to understand the different kind of illnesses that are out there, and to be more understanding towards people when they are displaying what I would perceive as strange behavior.
He is constantly belittled and abused by the adults in his life. In the scene about halfway through the movie, John acts out some of the behavior of his parents calling him any and every foul thing but his name, when Andrew expresses his disbelief, John shows him his scar from a cigar burn he received for "spilling paint in the garage."
