John Proctor is an Aristotelian tragic hero in Aruther Miller’s play The Crucible. Because in the play, he is a mighty figure, he endures uncommon suffering, and he recognizes the consequences of his actions.    Proctor is a mighty figure. In the play, he is a good puritan farmer man and he has a good family. But he also has weakness, he does not like his pastor, therefore, he does not go to church anymore and he does not let his third child be baptized. (Miller 32) His is surly a good man but his secret, the affair with Abigail, makes him not a very good Puritan. He is neither entirely good nor entirely evil. “Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!” (Miller 62) Proctor says this at the end of the play. His reputation seems very important not only to him but also to his family, however, his faith is strong enough to let him tell the truth to stop all the dramas in the town and save his life spiritually. …show more content…

The affair between Proctor and Abigail causes the jealousy of Abigail who sets the entire witch trail in Salem. It also causes disconnection between Proctor and his wife Elizabeth. John is facing all kinds of problem that happen in his life, such as his reputation, his marriage, his job, and even his life. However, John is patient to his marriage. He tried to stop Abigail’s trick in order to reconnect with his wife. He chooses to committed adultery, which could make his reputation bad and even led his to death, because he tries to save his wife.
