Have you ever read the book To KIll a Mockingbird by Harper Lee? The book took place in the 1930’s. It’s about a family from Maycomb County and the dad (Atticus) is defending a black man (Tom Robinson). It is important for Atticus to defend Tom Robinson even though it puts himself and his family in danger.
dreams; who looks inside, awakes.” This quote by Carl Jung provides a brilliant overview of his concept
It is common for human beings, as a race, to fall into the comforts of routine – living each day similar to days before and days to come. Unfortunately, it is often too late before one even realizes that they have fallen into this mundane way of living in which each day is completed rather than lived, as explained by David Foster Wallace in “This Is Water”. This commencement speech warned graduating students of the dangers of submitting to our “default settings” of unconscious decisions and beliefs (Wallace 234). However, this dangerous way of living is no new disability of today’s human race. Socrates warned the people of his time: “A life unaware is a life not worth living” and who is to say he wasn’t completely right? A topic of long debate also includes the kind of influence that consciously-controlled thoughts can have on the physical body. A year after Wallace’s speech, neurobiologist Helen Pilcher, published “The New Witch Doctor: How Belief Can Kill”, which explains the influence of the mind and individual beliefs on the quality of one’s life. Together, both authors illustrate how detrimental a life lived unaware of one’s own thoughts and beliefs can be on the body and spirit. And though it is easy to live by
... also come to the conclusion that complete understanding is not only impossible but also undesirable. As a result, Jack agrees with Ellis Burden who reasons that “Separateness [from God] is identity,” and since only God knows everything, ignorance is a quality all humans share (Warren 659). It is ironic that the world seems clearer to Jack when he realizes that men are naturally ignorant than when he sought to understand everything. Jack’s progress lies in his ability to “distinguish the pursuit of knowledge from Complete Knowledge itself” (Wolf). Jack realizes that it is only human have the freedom to pursue knowledge, while the possession of Complete Knowledge destroys the purpose of life. Jack’s epiphanies occur at the expense of others, namely Judge Irwin, Willie, and Adam, but it is necessary for Jack to learn that freedom comes from the realization of truth.
Joshua Nealy, a prominent medical school graduate, died last night from complications of losing his dream of becoming a practicing physician. He was 39 years-old. Soft-spoken and borderline obsessive, Joshua never looked the part of a “professional”, but, in the final days of his life, he revealed an unknown side of his psyche. This hidden quasi-Jungian persona surfaced during the last three years of pursuit of his long reputed dream profession, a position, which he spent nearly 10 years attaining. Sadly, the protracted search ended this past March 18th in complete and utter failure. Although in certain defeat, the courageous Nealy secretly clung to the belief that life is merely a series of meaningless accidents or coincidences. It’s not a tapestry of events that culminate in an exquisite, sublime plan. Asked about the loss of her dear friend, Emily, the girlfriend turned fiancé and dPT expert of Berkshire County, described Joshua as a changed man in the last years of his life. "Things were worse for him; not following his dream left him mostly lifeless, uninspired," Sammons noted. Ultimately, Joshua concluded that if we are to live life in harmony with the universe, we must all possess the powerful ability to change ourselves and the world around us; the choice to make ours from nothingness.
I think that John Quincy Adam’s quote about perseverance would be a wonderful quote for my gravestone. He says, “Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish.” This means the only way to get something, is to go out and do whatever it takes to grab it. In my life, I was determined to get my education. It was almost impossible to do so because of the Great Depression and lack of money. I decided to go and join the army and they paid for my education. Going through the training and all the orders were not an obstacle for me because I knew what was waiting for me afterwards. I also did whatever it took to win my battles, even if it took the lives of my men, which at the time seemed like
It’s made clear that logic may not always fit into the picture. Sometimes the choice to do something drastic has to be made. It’s a process that may not always make sense. In Steve Job’s case, he felt that school was not going to guide him in finding what he would love for the rest of his life. With a naive spirit he dropped out of college. In doing so, Job’s found an undiscovered liking towards calligraphy that would later benefit him in the typefaces of his Mac computer. To imagine one’s self commit the same act may be very difficult but looking back, things may make sense as Steve Jobs said himself, “[y]ou can’t connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect them looking backwards” (9). Also, within the pages of The Pact ,written by Sampson Davis, George Jenkins, and Rameck Hunt, are the success stories of three boys that did not know what they were going to be part of, but contrary to the world around them they strived for what seemed so unattainable in their beginning situations. Through trial and error the boys achieved and fulfilled their dreams of becoming doctors, all the while, the lives of many friends who had not followed their hearts still trudged in the difficulty of the
“ Simply because you were licked a hundred times doesn’t give us a reason not to try to win”(Lee 210). In To Kill a Mockingbird the author Harper Lee describes Scout as an eight year old girl and Jem as a twelve year old boy they grew up in Maycomb Alabama with their father Atticus. Atticus is a lawyer who had a case that changed his life completely defending an African American Tom Robinson. Tom was accused of raping a white girl. Atticus had the choice of defending him or saying he wasn't going to defend him. Atticus defended Tom Robinson because he believed that all men were created equal and he wanted to set a good example for his kids. It made sense that Atticus defended Tom Robinson because he took a stand for what he believed was right.
In John Steinbeck’s novella, “Of Mice and Men”, George and Lennie’s dream of a farm was doomed to fail from the beginning due to it being a mere calming thought for Lennie, along with the fact that they tried to do too much too late, as well as the unfortunate fate Lennie was doomed to fall into, which leaves George to abandon the plan.
The story however ends with Frankeinstein drawing the conclusion that his discovery was not wohrth all the suffering. He warns Walton not to follow in his footsteps, saying, “Learn from me, if not by my precepts, at least by my example, how dangerous is the acquirement of knowledge, and how much happier that man is who believes his native town to be the world, than he who aspires to become greater than his nature will allow.”
...enius. She compare the narrator to a professor at MIT, John Nash, who had schizophrenia but was able to develop one of the greatest theories that common day economic relies so heavily on. She shows that maybe the narrator is similar in that way that he is almost a genius in pulling off the crime that he had committed.
His brain is as cunning as his fingers and though we meet signs of him at every turn, we never know where to find the man himself” (49). Assuming that John Clay comes from a typical wealthy aristocratic family, he receives an education that only the wealthy can afford. When getting an education, one can learn to read and the person’s thought process begins to expand. The ability to read is an essential tool to being a criminal. Reading helps the criminal because he could go to the library and find books or public records to gain knowledge of the people and town he plans to rob. In the story, it seems that John Clay has thought out his plan to rob a bank very thoroughly because he has accepted an offer from Mr. Wilson to work for him at half wages. This shows that he has chosen Mr. Wilson to be the gullible man to take advantage of and trick. Choosing a naïve man to work for at half wages is a mask to hide his true intentions of robbing a bank that is conveniently near Mr. Wilsons shop.” I walked round the corner, saw that the City and
Sleeping and Dreaming Despite the large amount of time we spend asleep, surprisingly little is actually known about sleeping and dreaming. Much has been imagined, however. Over history, sleep has been conceived as the space of the soul, as a state of absence akin to death, as a virtual or alternate reality, and more recently, as a form of (sub)consciousness in which memories are built and erased. The significance attributed to dreams has varied widely as well.
That is not true for me. When a person lives, it is when he/she does not worry about something far from your own concerns, it is when he/she loves to live a life helping others, but not all the time, sometimes being selfish and still ask for forgiveness. These are simple things that make us a living human being. There is a saying “Cogito Ergo Sum” by Rene Descartes which means “I think therefore I am”, it is true but life is not always about thinking. Sometimes overthinking leads to a person to do indecisive actions such as committing crimes, or even suicide, which deletes the meaning of the saying. For me, existing as a human person is simply just living life like a normal person, because that is what the society demands us to do as of now, if you do anything differently then you will be judged and criticized which is not a good sign because, again, it could lead to indecisive
