The world of healthcare is driven by competition; the organizations that deliver quality care to their patients, employees, and third parties will generate more profit when compared to organizations that do not focus on quality (Nowicki 2016). The organizations that choose not to focus on quality could potentially lose revenue because patients might choose to visit a hospital that finds quality an important part of their mission. Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital is part of the non-profit Memorial Healthcare System. This hospital focuses on delivering the best to their patients by focusing on patient-and-family centered care. They put all their efforts into delivering the best quality hospital stay. They do this not only by being known for their
patient-and-family centered care, but also by using advanced technology and hiring the best pediatric board certified doctors (“About Us” 2012). Some examples of how they go above and beyond for their patients is by performing car seat safety checks and a Teddy Bear Clinic where they demonstrate hospital equipment and procedures on teddy bears. In addition they give back to the community by having CPR programs, Home Alone safety programs, and other various child safety programs. Patients are of course what keeps the hospital running, however they also care about their employees and the work environment. The Memorial System has won multiple awards throughout the years for best places to work in health care (“About Memorial Healthcare System” 2016). Employees contribute to the quality of this healthcare system and play a vital role in what makes this hospital system one of the best in Florida.
This paper will propose the major steps that Caring Angel Hospital (CAH) could take to achieve each of the following goals: Improve the quality of care, add value to the organization, improve employee morale, design an efficient organizational chart, create a strong team environment and create the hospital’s competitive edge. It will also recommend one approach that the hospital could use for acquiring a larger market share given the prevailing financial circumstances. It will investigate two value-added services that CAH could offer to strengthen its value proposition and examples of the advantages of those services.
After first reading the essay “Sports Should be Child’s Play,” I believe David Epstein made a valid point when discussing the issue of children participating in competitive sports at a too young of an age. He effectively delivered his argument by giving an appropriate amount of evidence without crowding the piece and losing the reader. There were certain sections of the essay that would have been difficult to understand without context, however Epstein was able to guide the reader and explain the evidence and situation when necessary. The title of the essay drew me in because “child's play” coincides with something that can be easily accomplished and is enjoyable. However sports, at the higher level, are challenging and are required to be taken seriously. If children are playing at competitive level too early in their life, it can cause a loss of enjoyment and be detrimental to their physical and mental health.
For many years now, my biggest influencer has been Roberto Clemente, who played Major League Baseball in the 60’s and 70’s. Roberto Walker Clemente was born the youngest of seven children to Melchor and Luisa Clemente in Puerto Rico on August 18, 1934. Although growing up poor in Barrio San Anton in Carolina, he was happy and remained very close to his family and to his country and its inhabitants throughout his entire life. Roberto was an industrious young man and worked various odd jobs including milk delivery. He began playing baseball with his brothers and friends and was eventually signed for forty dollars a month by a professional hardball team in the Puerto Rican town of Santurce. David Ortiz is an icon because of his contributions to the welfare of children and to baseball. His charity raises money to give kids medical care that they need or don’t have access to, and trains doctors and nurses. He has made significant contributions to baseball by changing the designated hitter’s role and donating equipment to children in need. If more wealthy people followed Ortiz’s humanitarian values, many of our current problems like poverty, racism and education imbalance would most likely not exist.
According to Fred Lee (2004) hospitals use clinical results and process improvement as a gauge of quality as this data can be readily measured and objective. Conversely, patients judge the quality of care by individual perception. Therein a gap of what the patient’s perception of quality care and how the healthcare providers perceive quality of care is created. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the Gaps Model of Service Quality while comparing the findings of the work done by Fred Lee in the book, If Disney Ran Your Hospital: 91/2 Things You would Do Differently.
During the initial in person interview I asked about Jordy Gatto’s background and how he was raised. He responded with the story of his birth on December 14, 1994 in Pennsylvania’s Ellwood City, Jordy Gatto grew up with both of his parents and an older brother. In the second interview he informed of his intelligent mom, who attended nursing school, and his brother was in school. All while working under his kind father doing tasks that requiring manual labor such as repairing and constructing. Ironically the word “gatto” means “cat” in Italian, as Jordy himself considered the family “a bunch of hairy Italians”, who had chickens, dogs, and a cat for pets as part of the Gatto family. When I asked him what his favorite activities were in high school. He mentioned pole vaulting and weightlifting, gave me the impression of a fitness jock. However, as soon I dove into his interests I discovered his passion truly lay with Nature and her creatures. That Jordy’s recurring solemn and love for nature and animals are just hardwired into his DNA.

By allowing physicians to receive payments on value over volume, patients receive quality of care and overall healthcare costs are lowered. The patients’ healthcare experience will be measured in terms of quality instead of how many appointments a physician has. Also, Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements are prompting hospitals, physicians and other healthcare organizations to make the value shifts. In response to the evolving healthcare cost, ways to reduce health care cost will be examined. When we lead towards a patient centered system organized around what patients need, everyone has better outcomes. The patient is involved in their healthcare choices and more driven in the health care arena. A value based approach can help significantly in achieving patient-centered care.
In her paper emerging model of quality, June Larrabee discusses quality as a construct that includes beneficence, value, prudence and justice (Larrabee, 1996). She speaks of quality and value as integral issues that are intertwined with mutually beneficial outcomes. Her model investigates how the well-being of individuals are affected by perceptions of how services are delivered, along with the distribution of resources based on the decisions that are made (Larrabee, 1996). She speaks of the industrial model of quality and how the cornerstone ideas of that model (that the customer always knows what is best for themselves) does not fit the healthcare model (Larrabee, 1996). Larrabee introduces the concept that the patient va provider goal incongruence affects the provide (in this case the nurse) from being able to positively affect healthcare outcomes (Larrabee, 1996). The recent introduction of healthcare measures such as HCAHPS: Patients' Perspectives of Care Survey has encouraged the healthcare community to firmly espouse an industrial model of quality. HCAHPS is a survey where patients are asked questions related to their recent hospitalization that identifies satisfaction with case based solely on the individuals’ perception of the care given.
