“Depression is a mental game, and you have no choice but to believe in yourself “ - Jillian Spengler. Jillian comes from a broken family. She has been through three divorces and has moved nine times (all in Bryan, Ohio.) She has a nineteen-year-old brother, a thirteen-year-old sister, and a three-year-old half-brother. 40 million people are diagnosed with depression/anxiety in our country a year, and Jillian Spengler is one of them. Depression is a mental health disorder that gives Jillian a sad mood, and a loss of desire to do daily activities. Depression is likely a hereditary trait from her maternal side. This could’ve given Jillian depression, whether it’s hormones, or brain chemistry. Some people have seasonal depression, where a certain season, like winter, can bring a sad mood. Most teens, like Jillian, go through depression when they’re hitting puberty because they’re facing big change. …show more content…
Anxiety is another mental health disorder that’s characterized by feelings of worry, anxiety or fear that are strong enough to interfere with one's daily activities.
40 million people are affected by anxiety in our country, and it’s the most common mental illness in our country. Jillian mostly experiences anxiety with school, work, relationships, or anything she was “uncomfortable with.” When Jillian's parents realized that depression was taking control of her life, they decided to make an appointment with her doctor. When the doctor was done asking her questions, he called her parents in and had a talk with them about how Jillian needed to go into counseling
immediately. Jillian never realized how much these symptoms would affect her daily life. Both of these mental disorders drained Jillian's energy and made her not want to do anything. It affected how she interacted with people in her daily life, her life at school, how she thinks, her attitude towards problems, and self-confidence. While Jillian was going through these problems she shut herself out from the world. She didn’t participate in school or socialize with friends and even family, she explained the feeling as “numb.” While having these symptoms, Jillian said that people thought less of her, and didn’t think she was capable of that much. When people knew that she had these disorders it made her feel uncomfortable around them because she knew that they felt bad for her. That’s why she would only talk about her issues with her Mom or counselor. Depression can take a toll on how you see yourself mentally and physically. With Jillian, emotionally, it made her feel weak and unstable. Physically, it made Jillian feel less confident in her body and her looks. After administration of therapy and medications, Jillian slowly progressed. At the end of her sophomore year, she started to notice that she was naturally happy and that she was getting more comfortable in her own skin. She said that without her family and boyfriend who gave her endless support, love, and help, and who dedicated time, money, and most of all, their heart, she would still be diagnosed with depression. Those things were vital for her happiness and healing., Her plans for the future are to attend The Ohio State University, and with a 4.0 GPA, she believes it’s possible. Jillian has recently joined NHS (National Honor Society). Additionally, she has made sure to involve herself in extracurricular activities like working behind the scenes in plays and participating in other school events. At the end of the interview, Jillian made sure to mention that without God she wouldn't be here telling me her story. At the end of Jillian's long and painful adventure, she has learned that without this experience, she wouldn't be half the person she is today, for this experience has taught her responsibility, respectfulness, hard work, confidence, and most of all trust!
Depression affects teens everywhere, some teens are upset about home life, school life, or just personal issues in general. Jessica states, “Running aired out my soul. It made me feel alive. And now? I’m stuck in this bed, knowing I’ll never run again” (Van Draanen 6). Jessica is one of the most determined athletes on her track team, the one thing she wants to do most in the world is run, and she can’t do it anymore because of her leg. Jessica says, “So I am getting used to it, and I am gaining confidence but I honestly don’t know if I’ll ever race again. It almost doesn’t matter, though. I can run” (Van Draanen 279). The author makes it aware that Jessica is depressed, but eventually she becomes the happy girl who can run again. The author wants people to know that sometimes things are hard and you get upset, but everything will get better it just takes time. I know that depression is a very serious issue to deal with, and I think time really does fix all

When dealing with Anxiety, many believe that is just a panic attack or “butterflies” that make you nervous. They do not comprehend that it is an abundant more than that. Amanda Seyfried once stated about her anxiety, “It's sad, actually, because my anxiety keeps me from enjoying things as much as I should at this age” (Seyfried 1). Her anxiety held her back from doing the things that she enjoyed. Her anxiety caused her sadness. Her anxiety caused her to separate her from others her age. Anxiety can cause an individual to attract Depression as well.
Victor Chang was one of the greatest heart surgeons of all time and saved many lives with his many great surgical skills.
Why do we become happy, sad, mad, or upset? Why are some days good while others are bad? We smile, cry, laugh, frown and this is a continuous cycle throughout life. Individuals describe depression as a state of sadness and confusion that humans face, but in reality depression impacts much more than one’s mood or behavior. I strongly believe depression is a mental health disorder, one in which people of society need to take more serious. I have been struggling with depression for quite a few years, as well as, witnessing close family members and friends who also face the daily challenges depression brings alone. It is hard to read the news headlines, of the traumatic stories of suicide. These individuals cannot handle the overwhelming problems and stress life. Often, they have no one to explain how valuable life is, ways to help them through difficult situations, or most importantly, getting individuals professional counseling. In most cases it is not that others do not want to help those in need, but that they are unaware of what actions to take in order to provide that help. I plan to become a counselor, so I can be educated on the different emotional, physical, and social problems individuals deal with. The questions I propose are valuable for me to research, so I can inform society the importance of understanding depression. What are the different types of depression? How can depression affect an individual's appetite, sleep pattern, and health conditions? When is therapy counseling and medication needed for treating depression? What are the main experiences individuals face that trigger depression? How are ages affected by depression? What are coping skills for depression? I believe the information I gain from these sources wi...

There are many arguments to be made against this statement. One of the three I shall point out is that Depression is not an illness or issue at all, but is simply a state of mind. In the words of the blogger Toma Haiku, depression, he argues, is a “state of
Anxiety is one of the most common mental illnesses in the United Sates. Anxiety is typically under diagnosed. Anxiety is a feeling of worry, nervousness, and getting anxious. It’s a feeling that you cannot shake, your heart begins to race, and you feel as if you cannot breath. Some believe anxiety is something that a person can control. They are wrong, anxiety is a debilitating mental illness that is hard to control and manage without the proper help. I chose anxiety because it is something that struggle with every day. The topics I will be discussing in my paper are the types of anxiety disorders, the manifestations of anxiety, treatment and medications, nursing interventions and patient education on anxiety. Depression is an illness within itself that affects the “whole body”. (Staywell,1998) The body, feelings, thoughts, and behavior are all immensely altered when someone is depressed. It is not a sign of personal weakness, or a condition that can be wished or willed away. For some people depression is just temporary, but for others it can last for weeks, months and even years.
To better understand depression and its effects on humans, there should be a clear definition of what depression is. The DSM-IV states that depression is a “depressed mood most of the day, nearly every day. Markedly diminished interest or pleasure in all, or almost all, activities most of the day, nearly every day” (6). In Kramer’s reading, he mentions that the cause of depression is linked to chronic stress. Styron also concentrates on her experience in dealing with someone close to her that is battling depression. Rose Styron explains in depth how she is coping and what her husband is like when he is in a state of depression. As well as William Styron explains his perspective of how he deals with depression, and how he masked his anxiety.
While perhaps not as well known as the great William Shakespeare, the English Renaissance author, Edmund Spenser, was influential in more ways than one. The Renaissance was a time of discovery and economic and artistic blossoming. After a challenging time, England was finally beginning to thrive. However, the creative influence of the Renaissance did not seem to reach them. While other countries, such as Italy, were growing artistically, England lacked the motivation and creative minds necessary to make change. But, once Edmund Spenser’s works began to be publicized, his ideas sparked change in more ways than one. Edmund Spenser not only influenced authors of his era with his new writing, but also helped spread Renaissance beliefs such as monarchism, Protestantism, rationalism, and anti-Catholicism.
I think that there are a lot of people out there who have anxiety/worry regarding
In the article, “Athletes and Coaches Report Mental Health is Slightly More Important Than Physical Health in Overall Performance; Both Agree That More Communication is Needed to Address Mental Health Concerns.”, the Minds in Motion Depression Awarenes Campaign conducted a survey and found that the athletes and coaches believed that “mental health shares an equal, and/or slightly greater role than physical health, in defining peak athletic
Depression is defined as being in a state of sadness or unhappiness. Doctors do not know the exact causes of depression, but they believe it’s chemical changes in the brain. All ages, races, and ethnic groups can experience depression. Most people who do experience it need treatment to get better. Many famous women have also battled with depression. Actress Ashley Judd, model Paulina Porizkova, Actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, singer and actress Gwyneth Paltrow, and singer and actress Demi Lovato. Demi Lovato had an eating disorder at the age of eight and started cutting at the age of eleven. She was bullied for being ‘fat’ so she used to overeat to cope, which turned into a lifelong struggle with food. In 2010 she had an altercation with one of her background dancers and decided to leave the Jonas Brothers Tour. After that, she decided to check into a mental facility. Today, she still battles with depression, her eating disorder, and alcohol abuse but is learning to get better. Depression is not overrated and should be taken seriously as a mental illness.
