In the late 1800’s, safe robbing was very common. “A Retrieved Reformation” is about a safe robber just let out of prison. The story begins when Jimmy Valentine is released from prison after only ten months. After he was released, Jimmy returned home to acquire his safe-cracking tools. A week after Jimmy was released from prison, he robbed a bank in Indiana. Later, he robbed a bank in Jefferson City, where he stole five thousand dollars. These robberies led to Ben Price, the detective who put Jimmy into prison in the first place, being summoned to find Jimmy. Jimmy registered at the Planter’s Hotel as Ralph D. Spencer. The hotel was in Elmore, Arkansas, where the rest of the story would take place. After arriving in the town for the first
time, Ralph opened a shoe store next to the bank. Ralph then met Annabel Adams, the banker’s daughter, and the two of them soon became engaged. Ralph’s personality changed, so he wrote a letter to his friend, Billy, to give away his tools. Later, a new vault is put into the bank in Elmore, and Ralph’s niece, Agatha, was locked in it by mistake. Jimmy still had his tools with him, so he opened his suitcase on a table and starts working to free Agatha. Within minutes, Jimmy was able to open the vault and free Agatha. Annabel called out to Ralph as he walked out the bank’s door. There he saw Ben Price, but Ben acted like he did not know Jimmy, letting him go. This story proves that change is possible for anyone.
Ordinary Courage is a phenomenal narrative of a descriptive soldier in the revolutionary war. Joseph Plum Martin was born in 1760 to a minister and his wife but was soon given to his mother’s father to be raised properly on his farm. Martin says himself that he was spoiled but well taken care of by his grandparents and never wanted for anything. As Joseph Plum Martin grew in became more and more apparent the discontent the colonies had with their mother country, England. Martin recalls being too young to remember much about the Stamp Act but knew that it caused an obvious stir among his countrymen. When the Boston Tea Party occurred Martin was somewhere between 13 and 14 years of age. It was at this time he began to understand what was beginning

N.T. Wright: During my first semester at Northwestern College, I was assigned the book, “The Challenge of Jesus” by N.T. Wright for one of my Biblical Studies courses. This book and every other book Tom Wright has written has dramatically impacted my Christian faith. Dr. Wright has not only defended the basic tenants of the Christian faith, but also has shown how an academically-minded pastor ought to love and care for his or her congregants. N.T. Wright was previously the Bishop of Durham and pastored some of the poorest in the United Kingdom. His pastoral ministry has helped shape his understanding of God’s kingdom-vision which he is diagramming within his magnum opus “Christian Origins and the Question of God”. This series has instructed myself and countless other pastors to be for God’s kingdom as we eagerly await Christ’s return. Additionally, I have had the privilege of meeting with N.T. Wright one-on-one on numerous occasions to discuss faith, the Church, and his research. I firmly believe Tom Wright is the greatest New Testament scholar of our generation and he is the primary reason why I feel called into ministry.
James T. Johnson was a young man who had a good job working as a construction worker. Although, he had a job and worked every day he still lived at home with his mother. Furthermore, he was the type of young man who went to work on time and after work he would come home. Unfortunately, there were occasions where he would go out with a few of his co-workers on a Friday he still came home afterwards. Nevertheless, he was hiding a secret from his mother that later led to him being arrested. Now, rather than James uses his money he had earned from working, he burglarized homes and garages in the communities in his area. After burglarizing these homes he would then sell the items he had stolen via the internet or a pawn shop in two different counties.
...r a confession from Proctor, if only to save the life of a godly man. The world desperately seeks wise men who can see through deception. John however, even with his wife pleading, refused to name any others as a servant of Satan and damage the name of Proctor. His pride led to his death. He could not stand being a coward, and I respect him deeply for that. If John Proctor did not ascend to Heaven, then I and all others should burn in hell.
Upon reading the poem "Saint Judas" by James Wright, the reader quickly realizes that the poem deals with Judas Iscariot, one of Jesus' twelve apostles. The author describes Judas as "going out to kill himself,"(line 1) when he sees a man being beaten by "a pack of hoodlums"(2). Judas quickly runs to help the man, forgetting "how [his] day began"(4). He leaves his rope behind and, ignoring the soldiers around him, runs to help. Finally, he remembers the circumstances that surround his suicidal intentions and realizes that he is "banished from heaven"(9) and "without hope"(13) He runs to the man anyway and holds him "for nothing in [his] arms"(14)
I am writing to inform you the status of the case of former convict Jimmy Valentine. Based on evident similarities from his previous work it can be concluded he partook in three burglaries following his bail. However, he has shown no interest in continuing this line of work in Elmore, Arkansas. It’s possible he has well orchestrated an entire trick to deceive us but the members of this town seem to genuinely perceive him as a good man. I have come to believe that as well although the occasional remaining doubt.
For the past century and a half bank robbing has been a major crime throughout the world that law enforcers are trying to crack down on. During the modern world we live in now many banks have put in high tech security systems trying to stop these men from stealing all of their money. As people may imagine bank robbers have had to change their plans in order for them to get away with how they go about taking the money and having a successful getaway. Today people that want to rob a bank have to go through extreme planning to make sure they are not caught. Many of them go after hours so they stay away from potential problems that may arouse when their are others around. Back in the 1920’s that was not the case with the back robbers of that day because they did not have cameras or security systems that they have today. The first banker robber that started it all for others was a famous man by the name of Herman Lamm who robbed his first bank in 1913 (“Bio.com”). Other great bank thieves like Pretty Boy Floyd, Baby Face Nelson, and the most famous of all John Dillinger studied and imitated the majestic still of Lamm. John Dillinger was considered the most brilliant and efficient bank robber of all-time and eventually earned the title from the FBI as Public Enemy Number One. In almost two whole years Dillinger and his men robbed a total of twenty-eight banks and took a total of 760,000 dollars which in todays world would be about ten million dollars (“Bio.com”). The FBI covered up the killing of John Dillinger because he was not only public enemy number one and a banker robber but he was a man of the people.
The Protestant would originally practice their faith in secrecy in order to avoid punishment from the majority of society that was Catholic based faith. More French Reformed churches began to spread out in France, which made protestant want to practice their faith more publically. Catherine de’Medici tried to ease the tension between the protestant and the Catholic by enacting a law that forbid harm to Protestant
The short story, “A Retrieved Reformation” tells readers about Jimmy Valentine and his both criminal and cunning ways. “A Retrieved Reformation” takes place during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s in Elmore, Arkansas. After serving a mere ten months of a four year sentence in prison, Jimmy Valentine was released. When he returned home, Jimmy reacquired his personal set of fine burglary tools. The text states Jimmy cleaned as well as dusted his suitcase containing these tools before soon participating in more criminal activities. Just a week after Mr. Valentine’s release from prison, a bank was robbed by him in Richmond, Indiana. Later, a bank in Jefferson City was robbed of five thousand dollars by Jimmy and his nifty safe-cracking ways. The
In the first half of the sixteenth century Western Europe experienced a wide range of social, artistic, political changes as the result of a conflict within the Catholic church. This conflict is called the Protestant Reformation, and the Catholic response to it is called the Counter-Reformation.
“The history of correctional thought and practice has been marked by enthusiasm for new approaches, disillusionment with these approaches, and then substitution of yet other tactics”(Clear 59). During the mid 1900s, many changes came about for the system of corrections in America. Once a new idea goes sour, a new one replaces it. Prisons shifted their focus from the punishment of offenders to the rehabilitation of offenders, then to the reentry into society, and back to incarceration. As times and the needs of the criminal justice system changed, new prison models were organized in hopes of lowering the crime rates in America. The three major models of prisons that were developed were the medical, model, the community model, and the crime control model.
I have taken a potion that Friar Lawrence gave me that will make me sleep for 42 hours. Even though I am worried that this potion will kill me, I decided to take it any ways so I can be with you. If I wake up tomorrow morning, I will have to kill myself or else my parents will make me marry Paris. My parents will think I have died so they will host a funeral for me and place me in the ancient vault with the other Capulets that have died. At the end of the 42 hours you and Friar Lawrence will wait in the vault until I wake up. When I wake up we can run away and be together like we wanted. Just please be there when I wake up. I am scared that if I stay in the vault to long, the screaming of the ghosts might make me lose my mind. What if I see
“A Retrieved Reformation” by O. Henry starts off with Jimmy Valentine being released from prison. Jimmy was not a very good person. He broke into and stole from bank’s safes for a living. When he was released from jail, he decided to move to a small town where no one knew who he was and he could start all over again. He immediately sees someone he falls for, Annabel Adams. When he meets her, everything he thought life was changed. One lesson the story suggests is love can change people for the better.
We all wish we could turn back the clock, do something different, for it's impossible to change what we've done, but not what we plan to do. Jimmy Valentine, master safe cracker and criminal, got busted and sent to prison for what was supposed to be a ten-year sentence. After just four months of his sentence, he was let out and went straight back to his old habits. Not long after getting out Jimmy comes across a girl that changes his life forever, but abstaining from his old ways would seem near impossible for him. Fortunate for Jimmy he’s honest about changing his life; he moved to a town, established a serious relationship, and was honest to himself and others about changing his ways, all to life a moral life.
