Jimmy Valentine was an extraordinary thief who changed his life around to become a thoughtful person. Jimmy Valentine was a former bank robber and professional thief. He could pick just about any lock there was with his set of tools however, it clearly can be seen that Jimmy Valentine changed much in one year to be a better man with a moral life because he started his very own shoe company, fell in love with Annabel Adams, and used his past skills for the greater good to help someone in need. Jimmy Valentine changed enough to start his own shoe company and leave his life of crime in the past. In the story it says “He opened his own shoe-store and secured a good run of trade.” Jimmy Valentine left beyond his previous job to start a new successful …show more content…
business with shoes. Jimmy Valentine always had a passion for shoes and did not realize it until the story. At the beginning of the story it says “Jimmy Valentine was assiduously stitching uppers.” He had a passion for shoes even when he was in prison. Jimmy Valentine helps others by making and stitching shoes. His company was revolved around helping others with their need for shoes. This played a big factor in why Jimmy Valentine is a better person. Jimmy Valentine changed his bank-robbing lifestyle and became a tremendous person and learned how to love something other than money. Jimmy was going to get married in the story. In the story Jimmy says “I’m going to marry the finest girl on earth in two weeks. Jimmy loved Annabel enough to want to spend the rest of his life with her. Annzbel and her family both liked Jimmy and thought he was a good person. In the story they all had dinner and were happy. Jimmy would let everyone discover his true identity to help Annabel’s niece. He proceeded to help Agatha when she got stuck in the bank’s vault. He had special tools to help get her out, but they were clearly tools used to break into top-notch vaults and safes.Jimmy Valentine learned to love Annabel and that is another reason why he changed his lifestyle as soon as he met her. Jimmy Valentine used his past skills for the greater good. It wasn’t Jimmy Valentine’s fiance that was trapped in the safe but he still helped Agatha. He did not have to help Agatha out of the safe but still did out of the kindness in his heart. No one knew that he was capable enough to open the safe with his tools. It was very suspicious looking since Ben Price who was a detective and had a badge was right behind them. Ben could have tackled Jimmy Valentine because he could of thought that he was trying to rob the bank. Ben Price could have also arrested Jimmy, and imagine him reading Jimmy his miranda rights in front of all of Annabel’s family. He would have been exposed too. He risked letting everyone know his true identity by opening up the safe so easily. Annabel and her family were probably wondering how he opened the safe so easily, and if you do not remember he told Annabel that there were metal shoes in his suitcase. Jimmy Valentine helped Agatha even though he did not have to but still did it because he changed into a nicer, much more helpful person. Although Jimmy Valentine changed a lot throughout the story, there is another side that says that he did not change.
People who think Jimmy Valentine had still not changed may say that in thee text it says “A week later after the release of Valentine, 9762, there was a neat job of safe burglary done in Richmond, Indiana, with no clue to the author. you could say that this really doesn’t add up at all. Jimmy was pretending to have a job in New York at a whear company at the time. Also, it does state that the robbery was done in Richmond, Indiana, but how could it have been Jimmy Valentine if he was nowhere near Indiana. This story is also from 1903 when cars were not very common unless you were wealthy. He would have had to do this by horseback or train which is also uncommon because the prison guard only gave him 5 dollars when he was released from prison. Some people who also do not agree with me on this may say that in the text it says “Two weeks after that a patented, improved, burglary-proof safe in Logansport opened like cheese to the tune of fifteen hundred dollars.” In the text Ben Price also finds Jimmy Valentine’s so called signature on the safe however, Jimmy was very smart with his burglaries and was a big fish in a small pond so he had a lot of connections in the criminal world. It could have been someone else pretending to be him just to get him caught. There is another piece of the story that people might use to support that Jimmy did not change and that is in the text where it says “An old-fashioned bank safe was robbed in Jefferson City.” This made rogue catchers as well as Ben Price aware that Jimmy was back in business.” This was before Jimmy saw Annabel Adams for the first time. When he saw her it changed him in that instant. This also brings me back to my point where Jefferson City is in Missouri, it is unlikely that he traveled that far just for one safe. It could have been anybody and I don’t understand how Ben Price and other rogue catchers
think that Jimmy is the only burglar there is. There was definitely someone else that could have done it that was from around Missouri. I could see any of these robberies making sense but it was probably the same person who robbed a safe in Richmond, Indiana that robbed the safe in Logansport, Indiana. Some say that Jimmy Valentine does not fit the description of a changed person who cares about others however, those were the counter claims why. Jimmy Valentine is far from his old self and is now a kind person who is aware of others who is known as Ralph D. Spencer because he started up his very own legal and crime-free business, fell in love with Annabel Adams, and used his past skills for the greater good. Ralph D. Spencer turned his whole life around and he is no longer Jimmy Valentine, nor does he have his characteristics.

The changes that were brought by Mrs. Barrows irritated and annoyed Mr. Martin. He had a daily routine, a routine which he would not change. Mr. Martin feels Mrs. Barrows as a menacing presence. She had come to alter and change his organized and structured world. Mr. Martin considered that Mrs. Barrows’ “willful, blatant, and persistent attempts destroyed the efficiency and system of F&S”(2). He feels threatened by Mrs. Barrows’ abrasive personality and is disturbed by her erratic behavior. Mr. Martin blames Mrs. Barrows for the disorder being caused at F&S. For example, she had fired several employees and even caused some employees to quit. Mr. Martin starts to become increasingly miserable and displeased with the many modifications that were brought by Mrs. Barrows and rather than speak up about his discomfort he begins to imagine and plan Mrs. Barrows being “rubbed out”.
In the short story After 20 Years written by O. Henry, Officer Jimmy Wells, while walking his beat, went to meet his old friend Bob at the spot they agreed to 20 years earlier when he realizes that Bob is a wanted man in Chicago. Officer Wells is faced with a dilemma - being loyal to his friend Bob, or being loyal to his duty as a police officer. Officer Wells doesn’t have the heart to arrest Bob himself, so he doesn’t reveal his identity and instead sends an undercover officer to arrest him. The undercover officer pretends to be Jimmy but, on their walk, they stop to look at each other and Bob realizes that the man isn’t Jimmy. The man reveals himself as an undercover cop sent by Jimmy and gives Bob a note from Jimmy in which Jimmy confesses who he is and explains that he could not arrest Bob himself. It seems as though O. Henry believes that Jimmy did the right thing. The evidence of that is that O. Henry writes Bob as an arrogant man who wears flashy accessories, brags about his wealth, and travels 1,000 mile to boast, knowing he’s a wanted man, while Jimmy is a quiet and clever man.

“I am Sick - discontented - and out of humour. Poor food - hard lodging - Cold Weather - fatigue - Nasty Cloaths - nasty Cookery - Vomit half my time - smoak’d out of my senses - the Devil’s in’t - I can’t Endure it - Why are we sent here to starve and Freeze…” Valley Forge, the hell of the American Revolution. The American Revolution was a war between what is now known as the United States, and Great Britain, in which the United States were fighting for their freedom. The reason for British inclusion was that they needed the colonies (the United States) for resources and for taxes. Three years into the American Revolution and it’s Winter, 1777. General Washington needed somewhere secure to relocate his army for the Winter. Enter Valley Forge, a military camp in Pennsylvania. If I had a choice of either staying in Valley Forge for the Winter or returning home, I would not have stayed in Valley Forge for the following reasons; sickness and death were rife, the living conditions were horrendous, and the continental army was running out of supplies. The soldiers
James (or Jim) Bowie, known for his Bowie Knife, was a legend among even more legends. His life was amazing, and his legacy was extraordinary; his death saved many lives, as did his life. He was an excellent fighter and won many battles, but he had a battle with drinking that he could not quite overcome. Jim also had a pretty short temper. However, he has a tremendous history about him.
Jay Gatsby is the epitome of a tragic hero; his greatest attribute of enterprise and ambition contributes to his ultimate demise, but his tragic story inspires fear amongst the audience and showcases the dangers of allowing money to consume one’s life. To qualify as a tragic hero, the character must first occupy a "high" status position and also embody virtue as part of his innate character. In Fitzgerald’s novel, the tragic hero Jay Gatsby was not born into wealth but later acquired social status through bootlegging, or selling illegal alcohol during Prohibition. When he was a child, James “Jimmy” Gatz was a nave boy from North Dakota without any family connections, money, or education who was determined to escape his family’s poverty through hard work and determination. Once he enrolls in the army, however, Gatsby gets “’way off my ambitions, getting deeper in love every minute, and all of a sudden I didn’t care” (151) when he meets who he believes to be the girl of his dreams—Daisy.
According to Eysenck's personality chart, because Jimmy is so introverted and high on neuroticism, he is increasingly anxious, moody, unsociable, quiet, and reserved. We can see Jimmy's anxiety beginning to grow as he realizes the police are closing in on him and his future will never be the same. Many things can be learned by observing people's personality traits, but Jimmy's story gives us an example of how you may appear to be shy and quiet on the inside but be a dark and troubled individual with plans of murder beneath the surface.
Novelist, Kurt Vonnegut, once said, “We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.” Jimmy Valentine was a safe cracker who had robbed countless banks. During a four year jail stay, Valentine was pardoned by the mayor and took a train down to a small Arkansas town named Elmore. There he changed his name to Ralph D. Spencer, opened a shoe store, and met his future fiance, Miss Annabel Adams, who happened to be the banker's daughter. During a vault inspection, lead by Mr. Adams, Annabel’s niece locked her sister into the vault while they were playing. Valentine cracked open the safe to rescue her, consequently revealing his true identity. Jimmy Valentine is a criminal, but he has demonstrated
He is one of the only people that exhibit human qualities throughout the story. His rough childhood has a major role to play in his need for emotional connection with others and he seems very lonely even when he is with his friend Crake. Jimmy’s Childhood was very rough and played a big role in his personality. He grew up with parents who did not have an emotional connection to each other. They were always fighting or pretending to get
From the very beginning of the story, Jimmy Valentine had the potential to change. Right after Jimmy was bailed out of jail, the warden told him, “you’ll go out
In the story After 20 Years, the author conveys a credible message on friendship. The two friends, Bob and Jimmy, were childhood companions. Eventually, they realized that they would part ways, and, most likely, not see each other anymore. They made a deal that in twenty years exactly, they would meet at the 'Big Joe' Brady's restaurant at ten-o-clock. That was the exact date and time that they had departed. As Bob is telling the police man this story, he doesn't know that he is actually under arrest. Then, who Bob thinks is Jimmy, finally shows up and they start to talk about their lives and what has been going on. However, the man Bob is talking to is not Jimmy, but he is actually a police man. After Bob realizes this, he also realizes that
