The Things They Carried explores the experiences of the Vietnam War from differing perspectives and times. While there are many characters in the book, Tim O’Brien provides a main focus on his squadron, himself, Norman Bowker, and Jimmy Cross. Through these characters, O’Brien paints a vivid and harrowing picture of the costs of war and the effects of death during war. Norman Bowker was shown previously as a happy and fulfilled character at the start of the war. After this experience, however, Norman felt the mourning that came with Kiowa’s death, and this situation during the war traumatized him for the rest of his life, all the way until his suicide. He felt other people didn’t care about Kiowa’s death and only cared for his medals that he earned from war. He becomes a tragic character, one who has lost his meaning without the war. This is also shown with Jimmy Cross’s reaction to Kiowa's death, “Jimmy Cross stood very still, afraid to move, yet knowing he had to, and then he murmured to himself, ‘My fault,’ and he nodded and waded out across the field toward the boy" (169). Jimmy Cross initially is described as a well-meaning soldier, fantasizing about letters from a classmate from home. But, after this experience, he is forced to take responsibility for Kiowa’s death, forcing him to grow as a leader. He is shown carrying guilt, shame, and increasing responsibilities as the war goes on.
