“Fear is the tax that conscience pays to guilt”(George Sewell). In The Things They Carried, soldiers carry more than just guns, knives, and weapons. They also carry intangible things such as fear and memories, and guilt which is the main focus of the story. War has a huge impact on characters in this novel because war changes the way you think, act and relate to other people. Three characters that experience change from war are Mary Anne Bell, Norman Bowker and Lieutenant Jimmy Cross. Mary Anne Bell was a seventeen year old girl from Cleveland Heights Senior High School. She wore a sexy pink sweater, white culottes, and has blue eyes. She was sent to Vietnam to be with her boyfriend, Mark Fossie, who shipped her there so they could be together. Mary Anne quickly became very interested in the war and wanted to get a feel for how people lived and what the smells and customs were. Mary Anne fell into the habits of Vietnam because she refrained from wearing cosmetics and jewelry. Cross had two photos of Martha and letters that he carries from her. Ted Lavender went in the woods to pee and on his way back he was shot in the head. Jimmy Cross was devastated by this and feels that it was his fault that Ted got shot. “He had loved Martha more than his men, and as a consequence Lavender was now dead, and this was something he would have to carry like a stone in his stomach for the rest of the war”(O’Brien 16). Jimmy Cross then decided to burn the photos and letters from Martha because of what happened to Ted Lavender. He felt guilty that Ted Lavender got shot even though there was nothing he could do about it. Lieutenant Jimmy Cross couldn't stand the feeling of guilt so he burned the photos and letters so he could lead his platoon like a real lieutenant
