Blacks had suffered under the Jim Crow laws for 87 years. From 1877- 1964, the Jim Crow Laws were made to keep blacks “ in their place”. African Americans couldn’t use the same restrooms, cars, doors, even windows as whites. Many blacks couldn’t vote in the very early years of the laws. The 1960s are when they stopped for good. The laws were awful for the blacks and here is where they are talked about. From the 1800s and 1900s, the Jim Crow laws came about in many forms till their demise. There were so many Jim Crow laws throughout the 1800s and 1900s. The laws covered almost every single part of daily life in the United States. These were some harsh laws and they really kept African Americans as second class citizens. An example was that Blacks and Whites couldn’t be buried in the same cemetery after death. This was even the case for their pets, pets belonging to blacks were buried in separate cemeteries from white people’s pets. Even though they lived in the same places, blacks and whites had little contact with one another. African Americans couldn’t shake hands with whites because it was a sign of equality. In 1935, the state of Oklahoma passed a law that blacks and whites couldn’t be on the same boat. The laws weren’t as strong in the 1950s as they were in previous years. Despite the ease of the hardship on African Americans, the laws were still very hard on them. The Jim Crow laws really got around to nearly everything, blacks and whites had separate staircases, doors, restrooms, and even windows. African Americans went to different doors and rooms than white men in a work place. Blacks were forbidden from going into white areas of workplaces and looking out windows for whites. It’s good the Jim Crow laws stopped because blacks suffered a lot. The laws in the 1900s were awful and so were the people who really wanted to discriminate the blacks. Very harsh laws the Jim Crows were, but they were doomed by the 1960s. Today, the Jim Crow laws have long ended and the African Americans are very happy. The Jim Crow laws came about in a variety of different forms. They really kept the blacks “in their place”. It wasn’t until almost 90 years after they started that the laws came to an end. The Jim Crow laws had a long and prosperous history, but it wasn’t to last. In conclusion, the Jim Crow laws were very bad, and it was a great that they ended in 1964. People got used to African Americans having all the same rights soon after the Jim Crow laws ended.
